The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days at Cabo Roche are a tough watch. The forecast is pretty much a write-off for anything worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long stretch here with no real recommendations, so don’t be holding your breath for a score.
Looking at the whole picture, the swell is small and weak, coming in from the WNW, and the wind is almost constantly messing things up. The wave energy is pathetic, with values typically in the 20s, 30s, and 40s, barely cracking 90 at the very end. That’s weak energy, plain and simple. The water temp is around 74°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only silver lining.
From Friday the 17th through to the end of the month, it’s a desert. Every single day shows “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero. The wind is mostly a cross-onshore or onshore blow from the WNW, gusting up to 16 mph, turning the surface into a choppy mess. The swell is tiny, never even hitting 4 ft, and the period is short – 4 to 6 seconds – so there’s no power or shape to it. This is windswell junk, not real surf.
There’s a brief glimmer on Thursday the 23rd morning, with a glassy surface and a light NW wind at 3 mph, but the swell is still only 2 ft from the W with a 6-second period and a weak energy of 33. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. It’s a tease.
Later on, around the 24th and 25th, we get some clean-looking conditions with cross-offshore winds, but again, the swell is just too small and weak to do anything with. The energy is still in the 30s and 50s.
The last few days of the outlook into August 1st see the swell drop right off, down to 1 ft and 1 ft. It’s game over.
So, what’s the call? There is no standout. There is no best on offer. The whole 16-day window is a blank. For an exposed spot like Cabo Roche, this is a grim run, but it happens. The setup is more interesting for a kite than a surfboard right now. Don’t leave your boards in the car. The forecasts can change, but as it stands, I’d find something else to do.
Rusty.
