The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be real about the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf ahead, and it’s gonna take some patience. There’s really nothing on the table that’s gonna have you paddling out with a huge grin for a while, but there are a couple of windows where it might just be worth a look if you’re desperate for a slide.
Right off the bat, Wednesday afternoon at La Jolla Shores is a non-starter. We’ve got a tiny 3ft SW swell with a 16 second period, but the energy is weak at 486, and the conditions just aren't there. The water’s sitting at 71°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about all the good news. Don’t bother getting your suit wet.
Thursday and Friday aren't any better. The swell drops a touch, and we’ve got light cross-onshore winds that are going to put a little ripple on the surface. It’s small, sleepy, and pretty uninspiring. Keep the board in the car.
We’ve got a bit of a lull through the weekend and into the start of next week. Sizes hover around the 2ft to 2ft mark, but it’s all pretty weak and messy. This is a few days of nothing to get excited about, just small, poor quality lines. You’re better off doing something else.
Around the 29th and 30th of August, things might perk up just a little. The swell builds slightly to 4ft from the SSW on the Saturday and Sunday. It’s still not big, but the energy is a bit better. However, the wind will be a concern, especially Sunday afternoon, so the morning sessions are your best bet. Still, this is marginal at best.
The following week, around the 29th and 30th, we see a slight bump in size up to the 4ft range, but again the winds are just not doing us any favors. There’s still some cross-shore or cross-on conditions that will keep things a bit lumpy. It’s a lot of work for not much reward.
Then, right at the end of the window, we have a bit of a teaser. On Tuesday, September 1st, there’s a morning window with 3ft WNW swell, but the period is a super short 7 seconds. That’s just windswell slop. It’s not worth the paddle out. The afternoon drops off to almost nothing.
Honestly, this is a pretty flat spell for us. The swell direction is okay, coming from the SSW, which is what we want, but it’s just not got any size or punch behind it. There are no quality options in this whole 16-day period, so don't stress about missing anything. It’s a good time to do some fin testing or work on your tan. This kind of blank run isn’t unheard of, but it doesn't tend to stay this poor for long, so keep an eye on the charts.
This is Rusty, signing off.
