The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let's be real – this 16-day forecast for Icarai is a total bummer. We’re looking at a long stretch of dodgy wind and swell that just doesn’t want to cooperate. The water is a warm 81°F, a bit toastier than normal for this time of year, but that’s where the good news ends.

The whole period is a write-off. From July 30th all the way through early August, it’s all poor surf conditions. The wind is a pain – mostly cross-offshore from the SE in the mornings, keeping the surface clean, but the swell is coming from the East with a pathetic 6-second period. Wave heights are between 3ft and 4ft, but the combined energy is weak, rarely getting above 140. Afternoons are even worse, with the wind going cross-shore and chopping everything up.

There’s one morning, August 2nd, that almost gets a pass. The swell jumps to 5ft with an 8-second period, giving a combined energy of 229. The wind is clean cross-offshore, and the forecast gives it a marginal score of 1 out of 10. It’s the only thing that’s even close to rideable, but it’s still not good. For a beginner-friendly break like Icarai, that 3ft to 5ft range is fine, but with the wrong wind and short period, it’s just a mess.

The second week is a repeat. From August 8th to the 14th, it’s the same story: poor conditions, cross-shore winds, and weak, short-period swell. The morning of August 11th throws a 5ft swell with a combined energy of 395, but it’s cross-shore and still poor quality. That’s too big for beginners, and the wind makes it a frustrating session for anyone.

So, bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Icarai is a very consistent spot, so a dry spell like this is unusual. It won’t last forever, but for now, don’t bother. The morning of August 2nd is your only hope, and even then, keep your expectations low. With that wind and weak swell, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Rusty.
