The Lowdown
Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat about what’s cooking at Hendry’s Beach. Gotta be honest – this forecast is a bit of a slow burner. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing much happening, with just a couple of moments that might make you grab your board.
The water is a balmy 66°F, which is a good 4°F warmer than the usual for this time of year. That’s a big deal – you’ll be in boardies, no question.
The first few days are a total washout. Friday 17th and Saturday 18th are tiny and weak. We’re talking 1ft to 2ft swell from the west and southwest, with cross-on breezes making a mess of things. The wave energy is low (163 to 264). Don’t even bother.
Sunday 19th is still on the fence. A bit more energy rolls in (344 to 463) with 2ft to 3ft from the south, but the cross-on wind is still hanging around. You could get a couple, but it’s not going to be pretty.
Monday 20th – That’s the one to circle. Get out there in the morning. The wind goes glassy, just a light breeze from the south-southwest, and we’ve got a clean 4ft of south swell with a 12-second period. The combined energy is moderate (403). This is the cleanest it’s going to get. The south swell direction is perfect for the beach. The afternoon gets a bit bumpy again, so make it a morning mission.
Tuesday 21st to Thursday 24th is a frustrating mix. Tuesday morning has a decent 3ft from the south-southwest with a 13-second period and straight onshore wind, which is okay. The energy picks up (518). But the afternoon goes cross-on again. Wednesday and Thursday turn ugly, with choppy conditions and the wind hitting 15 mph on Wednesday afternoon. Not worth it.
Friday 24th to Saturday 25th shows some promise with 3ft to 4ft south swell, but the cross-on wind is a constant nuisance. The energy builds nicely (511 to 794), but it’s never clean. The morning of Saturday 25th has the highest energy of the run (794), but it’s still crossed up. It’s a tease.
The last week, from Sunday 26th July through to Saturday 1st August, is a long stretch of the same old story. We’re looking at 2ft to 4ft swell, mostly from the south and south-southwest, with periods from 11 to 18 seconds. That longer period (15 to 18 seconds) means some groundswell, but on a beach break it can be a bit straight and tricky. The wind is almost always light cross-on, with a rare glassy moment on the afternoon of Thursday 30th, but the waves are tiny then. The energy stays moderate (221 to 737), but the surf is never really firing. The 4ft showing on Friday 31st is the biggest of the second week, but the cross-on wind spoils it.
The bottom line: Monday 20th morning is your only real standout. It’s the one time the wind plays ball and gives us a clean, glassy session. The rest of the 16 days is a long grind of small, cross-on, average surf. Don’t expect much, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Rusty.
