The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Hendry’s Beach over the next 16 days.
Honestly, mate, it’s a tough stretch for paddle surfing. The whole 16-day window is a real mixed bag of small surf and iffy wind directions. There’s no single standout day that’s going to have you calling in sick. The water temp is 69°F with a massive anomaly of 6°F above normal – that’s very unusual for this time of year, so the water’s gonna feel like a warm bath, but unfortunately the waves aren’t matching that warmth.
Starting from late August, the 22nd and 23rd are pretty flat, with swell heights only around 1ft to 2ft. The wind is light cross-onshore, which is okay for keeping it clean-ish at that size, but the combined swell energy is weak. There’s just no push. Those super long period swells (16 to 18 seconds) are rolling through, but at that tiny height, they’re not wrapping in with any power.
Moving into late August and early September, we see a slight bump. On the 27th morning, there’s a 3ft swell from the S with a period of 11 seconds and a combined energy of 310 – that’s moderate energy starting to show. The wind turns light onshore, so it’s not ideal. The 28th and 29th mornings also have a bit more energy, with readings up to 330 and 426, and swell heights around 2ft to 3ft. The wind is light onshore or cross-onshore. These are “marginal” calls – you might find a soft little wave if you’re desperate, but nothing to write home about.
The only moment that catches my eye is the 30th of August afternoon. The swell jumps to 6ft from the WNW, but the period is a short 6 seconds. The combined energy is 448, which is moderate, but short period windswell like that just doesn’t have any grunt. The wind is light cross-shore. That setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing – it’s going to be lumpy and weak.
After that, September starts with a 3ft to 4ft swell from the W and WNW, but still short period (6 to 10 seconds) and light cross-onshore. Not great. By the 2nd of September morning, the swell from the S is 3ft with a 12-second period and energy of 408 – that’s the best-looking energy in the whole run. But the wind is light cross-onshore again. The last few days, from the 3rd to the 6th of September, are all small (1ft to 3ft) with light cross-onshore or onshore breezes and energy readings in the 200s to 400s, but it’s all marginal.
So, bottom line: don’t get your hopes up. There’s no proper clean swell and good wind combo in this 16-day window. It’s small, wind-affected, and just not worth paddling out for. The break is fairly consistent though, so it won’t stay this quiet forever – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
