Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m looking straight at the charts for our local zone and, honestly, it’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead. We’ve got Hawaiizinho on the radar, a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, exposed to the swell and waiting for that ideal NNE direction. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird going on there.
For the first week or so, don’t get your hopes up. From Sunday the 5th right through to Thursday the 10th, the wave energy is weak to moderate. We’re looking at combined energy readings somewhere between 112 and 198, which is just not enough to get excited about. The swell is small, mostly around 4 ft to 5 ft, coming out of the east with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds – that’s windswell, not groundswell. The wind is a problem too. It’s blowing moderate cross-shore or cross-onshore from the ESE or E at 12 to 16 mph most of the time, putting a chop on the surface. Even on Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th mornings when it’s clean, the surf is still poor.
Now, the first real flicker of hope comes on Friday morning, July 10th. The swell bumps up a touch to 5 ft from the east, still a short 6-second period, but the combined energy jumps to 222, which is moderate and starting to show some life. The wind goes light cross-offshore from the SE at 12 mph, keeping it clean. It’s still only a 1/10 call though, so it’s marginal, but it’s the first time things aren’t total rubbish.
Moving into Saturday the 11th, the swell hits 5 ft from the east, period stays short at 7 seconds, and the energy climbs to 270. But that ESE wind is back at 16 mph and cross-shore, so again, it’s messy. That’s the biggest wave height of the whole run, but it’s not clean.
From the 12th onward, it’s a slow decline. The swell drops back under 5 ft, the energy fades into the weak zone – down to 77 towards the 20th – and the wind stays moderate and cross or cross-onshore nearly every session. The only clean moments are on the mornings of the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th, with smaller 3 ft to 4 ft east swell and light cross-offshore winds from the SE. But the wave period is still short at 5 to 6 seconds, and the energy is low, so even though it looks clean, there’s hardly any push.
Honestly, the standout window for a paddle is Friday July 10th morning. That 5 ft east swell with clean, light offshores is the best we’ve got. It’s not epic, but it’s rideable for a learner or someone just wanting a longboard cruise. After that, the outlook turns flat again with a long gap of nothing recommended. The afternoon of the 10th and the 11th have more size but ugly wind, so it’s a pass.
If you’re a kiter, the afternoon on the 15th with 19 mph east cross-shore wind and a lumpy chop might look more interesting than a surf. For us wave riders, it’s a lean spell.
