The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next 16 days for Fuengirola are a proper flat spell. We’re not talking about a few small days; we’re talking about a solid run of poor surf conditions that stretches from now until the end of the first week of September. There’s nothing to get excited about, and no real swell of any consequence on the cards.
The first sign of any life comes on the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. We’re looking at a tiny 0.6ft swell out of the SSW with a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 3 (weak), and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNW. It’s a wave for a foam board, not a real surfboard. The wind is good, but there’s just no ocean energy to work with.
We then hit a complete dead zone from the 26th of August right through the end of the month. The forecasts show zeros for swell height and energy. Some mornings are glassy, like the 29th of August with a NNE breeze, but there’s zero surf. It’s a lonely stretch for a surfer.
The first real, albeit tiny, uptick appears on the 2nd of September. The morning shows a 1ft swell from the ESE with a 5-second period and a combined energy of 8 (weak). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW, so it’ll be clean. Still, it’s knee-high at best, and the period is short, meaning it’s a weak, crumbly wave.
The best of a bad bunch, and I use that term loosely, looks to be the 5th of September. Saturday morning brings a 2ft swell from the east with a 6-second period. The combined energy hits 37 (weak), which is the highest we’ll see. The wind is glassy calm out of the WNW. That’s the best window for a tiny, clean wave. The swell direction from the ESE matches the optimum for Fuengirola, so it’s hitting the right angles for this exposed beach, but the size and period are just too small for anything fun.
Other than that, the 4th of September afternoon has a 2ft easterly swell with a glassy calm wind, and the 7th of September morning is glassy but only 0.6ft. It’s all the same story: tiny waves, short periods, and weak energy. Nothing here is breaking with any push.
For a beginner, the tiny 0.6ft and 1ft days with clean wind are a possibility for a paddle and a wobble, but it’s not surf. The water temperature is sitting around average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a paddle, you’ll be fine on a glassy morning. But for real surfing? It’s a write-off. Time to check the long-range models and hope for a change.
Rusty.
