The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Fuengirola over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – the first ten days or so are a total write-off. We’ve got a massive gap with no real surf on offer from now until the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. That’s a long stretch of flat, calm, and useless conditions. The wind is often light or glassy, but with zero swell to work with, it’s just a pretty lake out there.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Tuesday morning the 28th. We’re looking at a small 3ft swell from the east, with a period around 6 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the north, so the surf will be clean, but the energy is weak – only 47 (weak energy). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon sees the swell bump up to 3ft, but the wind turns onshore and messy, so it’s not worth paddling out.
The standout window, and the only real one worth getting excited about, is Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning brings a solid 6ft east swell with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps way up to 748 (moderate to strong energy). The wind is a light cross-shore from the north-northeast, which will keep the waves reasonably clean. However, 6ft is getting a bit chunky for beginners, and the shorter period means the waves won’t have that long, lined-up feel. The east direction is a cross-off for the optimum, so it’s a bit of a compromise, but it’s the best we’ve got. The afternoon stays similar at 6ft, but the wind goes straight onshore, making it a mess.
Thursday the 30th still has some size – 5ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon – but the wind is cross to cross-onshore, and the energy is lower than the day before. It’s marginal. The water temperature is about 71°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
After that, the swell fades quickly into the start of August, with tiny waves and onshore winds. For those of you on a longboard, you might find a knee-high dribbler on the 1st of August morning if the glassy conditions hold, but it’s a long shot.
So, to sum it up: the only real day to mark on your calendar is Wednesday the 29th of July. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only size on offer. If you’re a beginner, stick to the smaller mornings. The rest of the period is a bust.
Rusty.
