The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real: the next 16 days around Fuengirola are looking as flat as a windless pond. I’ve gone through the whole forecast, and there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days show tiny scraps of swell, but it’s all “poor surf conditions,” so we’re in for a long, dry stretch.
Right now, on Tuesday 18 August, we’ve got a dribble of swell at 2 ft coming from the east with a period of 6 seconds. The combined swell energy is a weak 17. The water is a warm 80°F, which is a whopping 6°F above normal for this time of year – feels like a bathtub. But that’s where the good news ends. The wind is light offshore from the WNW at 3 mph in the morning, so it would be clean, but there’s no wave to ride. By the afternoon, the wind swings southerly and goes cross, and the swell drops to 1 ft. It’s a no-go.
Wednesday 19 August brings a tiny 0.7 ft easterly swell early, with a period of only 5 seconds and energy at just 2. The wind is offshore from the west at 6 mph, keeping it clean, but it’s flat. The afternoon sees a gusty 19 mph WSW wind – strong enough to mess up anything, but there’s no swell anyway.
From Thursday 20 August all the way through the end of the month, the charts are mostly blank. No swell heights to speak of, with energy readings of 0 for several days. We get glassy mornings and clean afternoons, but it’s like a lake out there. By Monday 25 August, we see a tiny pulse of 0.7 ft from the ESE with a 3-second period and energy of 1 – barely a ripple. The wind is light offshore again, but it’s not enough to make a wave.
The same story repeats for the rest of the period. A few days like 26 August and 30 August show a touch of 1.0 ft east swell, with periods of 4 to 5 seconds and energy in the low single digits. The wind is glassy or cross-off, but the swell is just too small and weak. Even the best of these days, like 30 August Sunday morning with a 1.0 ft east swell, 5-second period, and energy of 4, is still a hopeless situation for a paddle.
The bottom line: there is no standout here. No wave worth paddling out for. The entire 16-day window is a bust. Fuengirola is a beginner-friendly spot, and it’s “fairly consistent,” but this run is a real drought. It’s the kind of stretch where the forecast can change, so don’t lose hope, but right now, leave the boards in the car and maybe go for a swim instead.
Rusty.
