The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real here. I’ve looked at the charts for the coming weeks and, honestly, it’s bleak. We’ve got a solid 16-day window stretching out in front of us, and the only spot that even gets a mention is Fuengirola, but don’t get your hopes up.
Right now, the water’s sitting at a toasty 80°, which is a good 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s way outside the usual range, so you’ll be sweating in your wettie.
The first real chance of anything remotely rideable kicks off on Monday the 17th of August, but it’s weak. Monday morning sees a tiny 3ft swell from the ESE, but with a short 6-second period and a light cross-shore breeze, the energy is a paltry 66 – that’s weak. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” The afternoon is even smaller at 2ft, and the wind goes light cross-off, but still, it’s just not happening.
Tuesday the 18th is a bit of a tease. The morning turns glassy with a WNW wind, but the swell has dropped to 2ft from the east, with only 16 energy units. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to push you around. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell is down to 1ft – don’t bother.
From Wednesday the 19th of August right through to the end of the month, it’s a total flat spell. We’re talking days and days of zeros across the board. The swell disappears completely, with no height, no period, and zero energy. The wind is mostly offshore or cross-off, but without any swell, it’s just a flat, clean lake. That gap runs for over a week.
There’s a tiny flicker of life around the 25th of August, with a 0.3ft swell showing up, but it’s just a whisper. The 31st of August finally sees a bit more activity, with a 2ft ESE swell and 36 energy units on Monday afternoon, but it’s still labelled “poor surf conditions.” The first of September brings a similar story: 2ft in the morning with a clean offshore and 23 energy, but it’s just not enough to get excited about.
The swell direction is from the ESE, which matches the optimum direction for Fuengirola, and the break is a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent. But with the waves this small and the period so short (under 8 seconds most of the time), there’s just no energy to work with. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so on the rare occasion there’s a ripple, you might have a few others out there, but honestly, it’s not worth the paddle.
Look, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a blank run. Fuengirola is a consistent spot in general, so when it’s this flat, you know it’s a proper lull. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing on the horizon that’s worth wetting your board. Keep your gear dry, and maybe take up something else until the sea wakes up.
