Table - best surf conditions forecast for Centers over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.
Right off the bat, it's a bit of a slow start. The first few days aren't bringing much to get excited about, with the swell coming in a bit messy and the wind not playing ball. The water temp is sitting at about 79°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
We'll kick things off on Wednesday the 8th of July. The standout actually comes later in the run, but for the early part of the period, we're looking at a lot of average to poor conditions. The best bet for a wave is going to be at Centers, a reef break that's fairly consistent. It's exposed to the south, which is the optimal direction for this spot.
The main issue early on is the wind. We've got a persistent ENE breeze, 15 to 19 mph, blowing cross-off. It's not ideal, but it's not completely trashing it either. The swell on Wednesday morning is 6 ft from the east with a short 8-second period, giving a combined energy of 676 – that's moderate energy, but the short period makes it a bit lumpy. It's a bit much for the beginners at that size. By Thursday afternoon, the swell drops right off to a tiny 2 ft from the south, but with a much longer 12-second period. The energy is weak at 174. It's a cleaner swell, but just too small.
We go through a real flat spell from Friday the 10th through to Sunday the 12th. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is still a fresh breeze. The waves are just not offering much. There's a notable long-period groundswell from the SSW and SW over the weekend, with periods hitting 16 to 18 seconds, but the heights are only 2 to 3 ft. The energy is moderate (309 to 417), but you'd be lucky to find a rideable wave.
Monday the 13th sees a bit of a pulse from the east again, 6 ft with an 8-second period and moderate energy of 774. Still, the wind is cross-off, and it's a far cry from clean. The next few days are a mix of small, long-period west and south swells, but the wind stays up, and the combined energy is moderate. It's a real grind.
Now, for the real highlight. Look towards the end of the run. Wednesday the 22nd of July is our best bet. The morning session at Centers is looking promising. We've got a 3 ft swell from the east with a long 16-second period. That's proper groundswell, and it's pointing straight into the optimum south swell direction for this break. The combined energy hits 980 – that's a solid, strong moderate energy. The wind is still a 12 mph cross-off from the ENE, but it's manageable. This is a setup that could produce some clean, lined-up waves. The long period might make it a bit straight at some beach breaks, but for a reef like Centers, it should be a treat. It's a good size for a wider range of skills, not too big, not too small.
The following day, Thursday the 23rd, the wind picks up again to 19 mph, and the swell drops back down, so that Wednesday window is the one to circle.
Overall, the first full week is a write-off, but there's a real glimmer of hope in the second week, with that Wednesday 22nd stand-out session at Centers. It's a bit of a wait, but it might just be worth it.
Rusty out.
