The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re looking to get a wave in Mallorca over the next 16 days, you’re going to need a whole lot of patience and maybe a different hobby. We’ve got a long, flat spell ahead.
For the first recommendation, we’re looking at Mallorca - Cala Major. But honestly, it’s a tough watch. The water is a very unusual 84° – that’s 6° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a real head-scratcher. The issue is the swell. For the first week, from Wednesday the 29th of July right through to Tuesday the 5th of August, the surf is tiny. We’re talking ankle-snappers at 0.7ft to 2ft from the SSE and SE, with combined wave energy barely getting out of the single digits (1 to 12). The period is a short, weak 4 to 6 seconds. It’s basically a lake.
The only flicker of hope comes on the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August. It’s glassy, with a touch of swell rising to 2ft from the SE and a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy hits 12, which is still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. If you’re desperate for a float, you might find a dribble, but it’s not a wave you’d paddle for.
The second week from the 5th of August onward is even more of a ghost town. Swell heights drop back to 0.3ft to 1ft. The winds are often clean or offshore, which is a crying shame because there’s nothing to ride. By the 9th of August, the swell is a flat zero.
For a spot that is inconsistent and exposed to a SSW optimum, the swell we’re getting is from the wrong direction most of the time anyway. The crowds are "often" a factor here, but frankly, there won’t be anyone out.
Overall, this is a blank run. The setup is more interesting for a long swim than a surf. Don’t hold your breath.
