The Lowdown
Grab a coffee, grab a seat, because I gotta level with you. The next 16 days for Benicassim are a real tough watch. It’s a rare-break setup, and the forecast is backing that up. We’re looking at a massive dry spell, with hardly a whisper of decent surf. The first few days are a write-off, and honestly, for the whole period, there’s barely a glimmer of hope. The combined swell energy is almost non-existent, barely cracking double digits – it’s just a flat, lifeless water polo scene.
The first real chance – and I’m using that word loosely – comes on Sunday, the 23rd of August. The morning shows a little pulse of life with a 3 ft swell rolling in from the ENE, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits a whopping 53 (moderate, but that’s the best we’ll see). The wind is a light NNE at 3 mph, making for a clean, cross-offshore look. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The swell direction is ENE, which is the optimum for Benicassim, but the size is tiny and the period is short. It’s a sandbar that rarely breaks, so this is a rare, fleeting moment of something that might just be ridable for a very keen advanced surfer. It’s not a standout, it’s just the only thing on the menu.
After that, it’s straight back to the doldrums. The rest of the period is a flat wasteland, with tiny waves under 2 ft and weak, short-period energy. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, creating choppy, messy conditions. There are a few glassy mornings, like on the 30th of August, but with zero swell, it’s just a beautiful, flat lake. The water’s about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
This is a classic blank run for this area. It’s a spot that needs a lot of things to line up, and they just aren’t. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, the early morning of the 23rd is your only shot, but keep your expectations on the floor.
