The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for this spot.
We’re looking at Bicentenial Park, a reef break suited for beginners, but you gotta know it’s inconsistent and you’ll always have company. The water’s sitting at a warm 84°F, which is dead average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell comes from the east, and this spot likes it from the east, so that lines up.
The first week is lean. Real lean. Tiny waves, combined swell energy readings mostly in the teens and twenties – that’s weak stuff. The winds are actually alright some mornings, glassy on the 25th and 29th of August, but the waves are way too small to surf. The reports keep saying “poor surf conditions,” and I can’t argue with that.
You get a little bump on the 28th of August morning, with 0.4m (1ft) and combined energy at 44, but it’s still ordinary. The 1st of September morning sees a longer period of 15 seconds and energy at 91, but only 0.4m (1ft). The afternoons are ruined by a moderate cross-onshore chop, so forget those.
The best chance for a wave is the morning of the 3rd of September. We get 0.8m (3ft) from the east, 12-second period, and combined energy hits 169 – that’s moderate energy, the best of the entire run. Winds are light and clean. That’s your pick. The 4th of September morning is also glassy with 0.7m (2ft), so that’s a solid second option.
After that, it drops back into small, weak conditions through the second week. Not much happening. If you’re determined, hit the mornings of the 28th of August, 1st, 3rd, and 4th of September with a longboard. Anything over 3 feet is just not in the cards.
Rusty.
