The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the coming days at Asling's Beach.
First thing I gotta say, the water temp is sitting right on average for the winter, a solid 59°F.
Straight up, the first week and a half is a write-off. We're looking at a long dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for. From Sunday the 19th right through to the end of July, the swell is tiny, mostly ankle to knee-high, with periods all over the shop. The wave energy is pitiful, with readings barely cracking 100 (moderate energy), and most days it's well under that. The best you can say is the wind is often light, even glassy at times on Monday morning the 20th, but there's just no ocean to surf. It's a flat spell, plain and simple.
The only glimmer on the horizon, and I mean the only one, is the first weekend of August. The swell finally wakes up. Saturday the 1st of August sees a solid S'ly swell push in, with the morning hitting 8ft from the south. The energy is strong (1128), but the wind is a cross-shore from the SW at 16 mph, which will chop it up. That's a session for experienced surfers only – that size is too much for beginners. The afternoon is similar, still big but a little messy.
But hold on to your board, because Sunday the 2nd of August is the standout. The swell holds at 8ft, coming from the SSE, and the energy is pumping a massive 1479. The real kicker is the wind: offshore from the NW, light at 3 mph. That is going to groom that swell into clean, facey waves. The period is 10 seconds, so it's a solid groundswell. This is expert territory, no doubt about it – 8ft is only for the well-prepared. The morning session is the pick, with clean, offshore conditions. Crowds are a possibility here, so get in early. The afternoon is still good, with a cross-shore wind, but the morning is the magic window.
So to sum it up: a long, flat nothing until the very end, then a big, powerful, and clean Sunday on the 2nd of August. That's your one shot.
Rusty.
