Righto, let's get into it. This is Rusty, and I'm looking at a pretty bleak stretch for Asling's Beach. Honestly, the next two weeks are a tough watch for paddle surfing. The first half is dominated by a monster swell that's just too raw and wind-affected, and the second half fizzles out into weak, messy dribble. There's a long gap of poor conditions smack in the middle.
The water temp is sitting at 60°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year—nothing weird going on there.
Saturday the 4th kicks off with a tiny 1-foot SSE swell, but it's being ripped apart by a 16 mph cross wind. The wave energy is a weak 38. Not worth getting wet.
Sunday the 5th is the only real standout, but it comes with a massive caveat. We've got a solid 10-foot southerly groundswell with a 12-second period, packing a massive 3175 energy. This is big, powerful, and long-period, so it's strictly for experts only—beginners stay well clear. The problem? It's cross-shore at 12 mph, so it's going to be lumpy and a real battle. Later in the day, the wind drops a touch to 9 mph, but the swell drops to 8 feet, still a heavy wall for the crew who can handle it. This is the biggest push of the window, but don't expect it to be pretty.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are a write-off. The swell drops to 5-6 feet, but the wind stays cross or cross-onshore, creating chop. The energy is moderate (322 to 1278), but the quality is poor.
From Wednesday the 8th through Saturday the 11th, it's a mix of marginal and poor surf. There’s a moment on Thursday morning the 9th with glassy conditions and a 4-foot SE swell, but it's weak energy (306) and very ordinary. Friday morning the 10th sees a clean, offshore wind (NNW 3 mph) on a small 4-foot swell, but again, it's nothing to write home about. Saturday the 11th afternoon gets messy with a 12 mph cross-off wind.
Then we hit a big gap. From Sunday the 12th all the way through to Saturday the 18th, there's just no good surf. The swell is tiny—mostly under 3 feet—and when it is bigger, like 5 feet on Tuesday the 14th, the period is a shocking 5 seconds, and the wind is howling at 16 mph. The energy levels are low to moderate (17 to 412), but the quality is consistently poor. This stretch is a blank run; it’s not unusual for this area to go quiet, but it's still frustrating.
Finally, on Sunday the 19th, there's a glimmer. Morning brings glassy conditions with a 3-foot ESE groundswell, period 13 seconds. The energy is a modest 293, and it's surfable but ordinary. The afternoon holds a clean 3-foot cross-off breeze. It’s the best of a bad bunch for the second week, but it’s still small and very weak. Not worth holding your breath for.
All up, if you're a die-hard expert, you might wrestle that big, ugly 10-foot swell on Sunday the 5th. For everyone else, this is a two-week stretch to fix your gear and watch the forecasts change.
Rusty.
