The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days for Asling’s Beach is a tough watch. This is a sheltered little spot that’s mostly a beginner’s playground, but right now we’re looking at a long, flat, and messy run. The first real chance to even think about a paddle doesn’t show up until Sunday the 26th of July, and even then, it’s not pretty. There’s a solid gap of 7 days from now with nothing worth recommending – just tiny waves and poor conditions.
Let’s start with the first glimmer of hope. On Sunday the 26th of July, morning looks the best of a bad bunch. We’ve got a 0.5ft (0.5m) SSE swell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a weak 81 – that’s really low energy. The wind is light from the north, sitting cross-offshore, and it’s clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. For a beginner, this is about as small as it gets, and the lack of push means you’ll be working hard for barely a ride. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird going on.
The next standout – and I’m using that word loosely – is Wednesday the 29th of July morning. The swell lifts a touch to 3ft (0.9m) from the SSE, 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 176 (moderate). The wind is offshore from the NW, light, and it’s clean. That’s the biggest clean window we’ve got in the whole 16 days. The 3ft (0.9m) is a bit more than we’ve seen, but it’s still small enough for a beginner to handle. The offshore wind is a major positive, so if you’re desperate, that’s the session to aim for. Keep in mind the swell direction is SSE, which is slightly off the optimum SE for this sheltered spot, but it’s workable.
After that, things turn ugly. Thursday the 30th of July gets a big spike in energy – 365 and 502 in the afternoon – with a 3ft (1.0m) SSE swell and a very long 17-second period. That’s a groundswell, but the wind is cross-shore at 22-25 mph (35-40 km/h) from the SW. It’s a total mess. The period is so long the waves will break too straight for a beach break like this, and with that wind, it’s just lumpy, cross-chop chaos. This is not a beginner’s wave. The sheltering here means it won’t handle that size well, and honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August keep the energy high (255 to 361) with 4ft to 5ft (1.2m to 1.4m) SSE swell, but the wind stays cross-shore at 19 mph (30 km/h) from the SW. It’s all poor surf conditions – messy, lumpy, and only for experts if anyone’s mad enough. The swell is over 4ft, so it’s too big for beginners, and the cross-chop will make it a battle.
The rest of the run into early August fades back to tiny, weak waves with cross-shore winds. The last week has nothing to offer. A few breaks might be fairly consistent here, but this stretch is a blank run. Forecasts can change, so don’t write it off completely, but for now, Sunday the 26th or Wednesday the 29th are your only real shots, and keep expectations low.
Rusty.
