The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and ordinary for Asling’s Beach. We’re stuck in a run of tiny, weak swells and mostly wonky wind, so don’t expect much to get excited about.
The first real chance to paddle out doesn’t come until Sunday morning, August 23rd, and even then it’s a struggle. You’ve got a tiny 2ft SSE swell, period a short 10 seconds, and combined energy of just 77 (weak). The saving grace is glassy conditions with a light NE breeze at 5 km/h, so the surface will be clean. But honestly, that’s about the only positive – the waves are too small and weak to offer much.
Moving through the week, the pattern stays frustrating. Monday August 24th through Wednesday August 26th serve up little knee-high slop at best, with periods as low as 4 seconds and energy barely cracking 57. Winds are mostly cross or onshore, keeping things messy. Thursday August 27th morning goes dead calm and glassy, but again you’re looking at a 2ft S swell with only 46 energy – just not enough push. Friday August 28th morning is another glassy moment with 2ft SE swell and 75 energy, but the quality is poor.
There’s a flicker of hope on Saturday morning August 29th – still tiny at 2ft SE, period 9 seconds, but with glassy conditions and WSW wind at 5 km/h. The combined energy is 87 (still weak) and the notes call it “surfable but very ordinary”. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s probably the pick of the first week, but it’s not a standout by any stretch.
Sunday August 30th drops back to 1ft with a very long 17-second period from the SSE, energy 56 – the long period might make it straight at this beach break. Winds are cross-onshore and choppy. Not worth the drive.
Monday August 31st morning is interesting for a moment: glassy, 1ft SSE swell with a very long 20-second period and combined energy of 109 (moderate). That energy reading is the highest we see, but the size is still tiny. The long period might produce a few cleaner lines, but at this size, it’s barely breaking.
From there, the second week goes completely flat. Tuesday September 1st through Monday September 7th show swell heights mostly below 2ft, periods all over the place, and energy readings dropping as low as 1. Winds are a mixed bag – some offshore or cross-off, but with no swell to work with, it’s a write-off.
So, bottom line: there are no good surf options across the whole 16-day window. The only two mornings worth a look are Saturday August 29th and Monday August 31st – both glassy, both tiny, but at least the surface will be clean. For a beginner, that 2ft stuff might be manageable, but there’s no power or push behind it. This is one of those flat spells that happens from time to time – forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
