The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s cookin’.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag, and there’s a whole lot of nothing in the early days. You won’t find much to get excited about until we see the end of the month, and even then, conditions are messy. The real action, if you can call it that, doesn’t fire until September.
We start with Asling's Beach. The first week is pretty much a write-off. From Tuesday the 18th right through to the following Monday, the 31st of August, it’s all poor surf conditions. Swell is tiny – mostly below 2 feet – with weak energy readings in the single digits and teens, and winds are all over the place. There are a couple of glassy mornings, like the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th, but with nothing but a ripple of a wave, it’s a waste of a paddle. The water temp sits around 60°F, which is pretty average for the time of year.
Then things get a bit interesting, but for the wrong reasons. By the afternoon of the 30th of August, we see a jump in swell to 8 feet out of the ESE, with period around 7 seconds, and combined energy up to 563 – moderate. But with fresh cross-onshore winds, it’s lumpy and messy. That’s more of a kiter’s session.
The standout, and I mean the only real standout, lands on Monday the 31st of August. Asling's Beach sees a solid 16 feet swell from the ESE, with a long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is huge – a whopping 7000. But here’s the kicker: it’s cross-onshore all day, with moderate breeze and choppy conditions. That’s a whole lot of power with nowhere to go but messy. This is for experts only; beginners and even intermediate surfers should steer well clear. The water temp anomaly isn’t reported for these later dates, so can’t say much more on that front.
We do get a tiny window on Tuesday the 1st of September, with the swell dropping to 13 feet from the ESE, same long 12-second period, and the wind swings light cross-onshore in the morning. The energy is still massive at 6210, and the tide might make it marginal, but it’s the closest we get to a workable wave on offer. Still, with that size and direction, it’s a beast.
So, to wrap it up: the first week and a half are flat and not worth your time. The end of the month and start of September bring serious size, but don’t expect clean, glassy barrels. If you’re an expert and you’re desperate, the morning of the 1st of September is your best bet, but keep your expectations in check.
Rusty, signing off.
