The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s happening for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for days on end. For Anna Maria Key, the overall picture is pretty bleak. The good news is forecasts can change, and it’s not unusual for this area to go quiet, but as it stands, you’d be better off leaving the boards in the shed.
We start on Wednesday the 19th of August with a tiny, weak 2ft swell out of the WNW, but it’s got a shockingly short period of just 5 seconds and the combined energy is a measly 17 – that’s barely any energy at all. The wind is a messy cross-on from the WNW at 12 mph, and with a risk of thunderstorms, it’s just a choppy, poor surf zone. That afternoon the wind picks up to 16 mph and the energy drops to 9. It’s a write-off.
Thursday the 20th is even smaller, with a 1ft swell and the same weak, short-period energy. A light breeze in the morning keeps things a little cleaner, but it’s still cross-on and the wave comment says "poor surf conditions."
From Friday the 21st right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at flat to tiny conditions. The swell height barely cracks 1ft, the periods are short, and the combined energy is mostly in the single digits. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore for most of it, with a few days of clean offshore winds showing up on the 30th and 31st of August, but by then there’s absolutely no swell to ride – the combined energy reading is 0. It’s a cruel tease.
We get a tiny flicker of life on the 1st of September with a 0.3ft NW swell, but again, the energy is just 1 or 2, so it’s hardly worth mentioning. The clean winds from the ENE and NE will make for a pretty looking ocean, but there’s no wave to catch.
The very end of the forecast window on the 3rd of September shows clean offshore winds, but again, no swell energy. So, to sum it up – there are no standout days, no good surf options on offer in this 16-day window. It’s a solid gap of flatness. Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts, and maybe take up fishing for a bit.
Rusty.
