The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day stretch for Anna Maria Key, and honestly, the surf is barely a whisper. We’ve got a long dry spell at the start.
Looking at the whole picture, the combined swell energy is basically non-existent, hanging around a measly (3) at best. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 88°, which is nice for a swim, but not for a wave.
We’re going to be staring at flat, glassy conditions or tiny wind ripples for the first week. Friday the 21st kicks off with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the WNW with a snappy 4-second period, but it’s blown out by a light onshore breeze. Saturday and Sunday are the same story – tiny, short-period slop or just flat with glassy mornings. The wind does swing offshore and glassy on a few mornings, like Monday the 24th, Tuesday the 25th, and again on Friday the 28th, but there’s simply no swell to work with. It’s a tough run.
The gap stretches almost a full week with nothing worth a paddle. We finally see a tiny pulse on Monday the 31st of August morning, with a 1ft, 4-second SSW swell, but it’s still labelled “poor surf conditions.” The combined energy only kicks up to (5) that afternoon – still weak.
The only real standout, and I’m using that term loosely, is the very end of the forecast. On Saturday the 5th of September, we have a morning with a clean offshore breeze from the ENE and then the afternoon goes completely glassy with no wind. The swell, however, is still a flat zero. There’s just nothing to ride.
For a beginner spot like Anna Maria Key, anything over 5ft is too big, but we don’t even get close. The breaks are fairly consistent for the area, which means this blank run is a bit of a surprise, but it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out. But for now, leave the board at home. This setup is more interesting for a flat-water paddle than surfing.
Rusty.
