Table - best surf conditions forecast for Aberystwyth harbour trap over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the Aberystwyth harbour trap over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough outlook. The entire 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for proper surfing. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly poor conditions, so don’t get your hopes up for anything decent until the very end. The water is sitting at 65°F right now, which is a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a tropical bath, but it won’t make up for the lack of waves.
The first few days, from Saturday the 11th right through to the end of July, it’s all about knee-high dribble. Saturday afternoon sees a tiny 2ft swell from the NW with a short 5-second period, but that cross-on NW wind at 6 mph just messes up what little is there. For the next week and a half, we’re looking at swells mostly under 3ft, often with no real energy – the combined energy reading is mostly single-digit or low-double-digit numbers, which is about as weak as it gets. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th have clean cross-off winds, but there’s basically no swell to ride. It’s a frustrating blank run.
The only glimmer on the horizon comes right at the end of the forecast period. On Sunday the 26th of July, we finally see a pulse of energy. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the WNW with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 126 (moderate). The wind is offshore from the ESE at just 3 mph, so it’ll be clean. The afternoon holds similar, with a 4ft swell from the west and 103 combined energy, still with offshore light breeze. This is the only time the surf is even surfable, but it’s still described as "very ordinary conditions." It’s a small, short-period swell, so don’t expect any power or shape.
There’s really no standout session here. The Sunday the 26th is the best you’ll find, but it’s a far cry from a classic. For a reef break like the harbour trap, we’d want a longer period to get those waves standing up, and that 6-second period is just too short. It’s the kind of day for a longboard or a foiler if you’re desperate, but it’s not worth a special trip.
Sorry, folks, but this is a lean period for Aberystwyth. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
