The Lowdown
Right then, folks, it’s Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the forecast for the next couple of weeks, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a grim outlook for Aberystwyth harbour trap. The whole sixteen-day window is a bit of a write-off, to be honest. There’s not a single session I’d be itching to get in the water for. The swell is tiny, the wind is all wrong, and it’s just one poor surf report after another.
Let’s start with the first few days. On Friday the 17th of July, we’ve got a tiny 2 ft swell from the NW, but the wind is a cross-on at 9 mph, making it a choppy mess. The wave energy is a paltry 9 (combined energy of all swells directed here). The water’s sitting at 66°F which is a massive 7°F warmer than usual – that’s very unusual for this time of year, but it won’t make the waves any better. The rest of that weekend and into the following week is more of the same: tiny waves, all cross-on or onshore wind, and every single report says “poor surf conditions.” On the 19th, there’s a brief moment of offshore wind, but with no swell to speak of, it’s a total flat spell.
There’s a gap of several days where the combined energy is zero or in the single digits, just a complete lull. We finally see a bit of a bump around Monday the 27th of July, with a 5 ft swell from the west and a combined energy of 110 (moderate wave energy). The wind is offshore from the WNW at 6 mph, which is a positive, and the period is a short 5 seconds. The problem is, the report still says “poor surf conditions,” so even with a bit more size, the quality isn’t there. It’s only a 5 ft wave, so it’s still okay for beginners, but you’d be fighting a weak, short-period lump.
The final week of July and into August is a repeat of the same story: small, weak NW swells with cross-on winds. The last day, Saturday the 1st of August, has a 4 ft W swell with a 5-second period, but the wind is onshore at 12 mph, and the combined energy is only 52 (weak to moderate). Honestly, the whole setup is so poor and the wind so persistent that this little reef break looks more suited to a kite than a paddle.
So, there you have it. No standouts, no hidden gems. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual when the wind and swell don’t line up. We just have to wait for the next system to change things. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose all hope.
Rusty.
