The Lowdown
Right then, grab a brew. Rusty here.
Look, I’ll level with you. We’re staring at a right grim run of surf here at Aberystwyth harbour trap. For the entire 16-day window, there’s not a single session that I’d honestly tell you to paddle out for. The scores are flat across the board, and every single wave comment says the same thing: poor surf conditions. For a spot that’s usually fairly consistent for a reef break, this is a quiet spell. It’s one of those periods where you might as well leave the board in the shed and go for a walk along the prom.
We kick off Sunday, August 23rd. Glassy in the morning with 0.3 ft of weak 14-second groundswell from the west, combined energy at just 4. That’s tiny. The afternoon is cross-on with a light breeze. Monday the 24th looks clean with a moderate offshore from the east, but again, it’s ankle-biters at 0.3 ft. This nothing-surf carries on day after day right through to the start of September. There’s a little wobble on Thursday the 27th afternoon when we get 2 ft from the southwest with glassy conditions and the energy ticks up to 36 (moderate), but it’s still labelled as poor surf.
As we move into the second week, the swell actually tries to build. Sunday, August 30th, we get 5 ft from the west, combined energy at 177 (moderate). Sounds promising, right? But it’s onshore with a moderate breeze and rain showers, and because it’s a beach-and-reef setup, that’s going to be a messy, blown-out mush. At 5 ft, it’s pushing into maybe-too-big-for-beginners territory, but with that onshore wind, it’s not doing anyone any favours. To be honest, that kind of wind and wave combo looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Then on Monday, September 7th, the model throws up an 8 ft, 8-second swell from the west-southwest with a near gale cross-onshore. Combined energy hits 870 (strong to very strong). That is expert-only, full-on, dangerous conditions. The water temp, by the way, is sitting at a very unusual 66°, which is 5° warmer than normal for the time of year – that’s a proper anomaly, but you won’t be feeling it through a 31 mph wind.
So, to sum it up: there are no good surf options in this entire 16-day forecast. It’s a blank run. It doesn’t stay this poor forever, but for now, it’s a write-off.
Rusty.
