The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Aberystwyth harbour trap. Straight up, I’ll be honest with you, it’s a grim picture for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing worthwhile, so don’t go getting your hopes up.
The first proper chance of anything even rideable is a long way off, on the morning of the 30th of August. The swell is a tiny 4ft from the WSW, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds. The combined energy is still only weak (88). It’s a “surfable” wave, but it’s very ordinary. The wind is a cross-off from the SSE, so it’ll be clean, which is a small mercy. But honestly, it’s not going to get the heart pumping.
The next day, the 31st of August, the swell bumps up to 7ft from the WSW, with a combined energy climbing to moderate (360). The period is still short at 7 seconds though. The wind is a cross-off from the S in the morning, keeping it clean. That’s a fair bit of size, getting into the territory where it’s only for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-shore wind.
Then on the 1st of September, we get a morning of glassy conditions with a 3ft swell from the west, but the period is just 5 seconds and the energy is weak (58). It’s a clean, small wave, but with no punch.
The rest of the forecast is a write-off. There’s a gap of about 10 days from the start of the forecast with zero recommendations. We’ve got a few days of onshore winds, cross-shore chop, and tiny swells that would barely push a floaty. The 25th of August has a strong offshore wind, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft, so you’d just be fighting the wind for nothing.
So, if you’re desperate, the morning of the 31st of August is the best of a bad bunch. It’s got size, it’s clean, and the energy is there. But it’s a short period swell, which can be a bit fat and unruly, and it’s a reef break, so it might get a bit heavy. The 1st of September is glassy but tiny. Don’t hold your breath for anything else.
