The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days are a real struggle for surf around here. We’ve got a long stretch of pretty hopeless conditions, with barely a wave worth paddling for. The first decent surf isn’t forecast until the 24th of July, so that’s a solid 9-day gap of nothing but small, choppy, and cross-on junk. Let’s get into it.
From Wednesday morning the 15th of July right through to the 23rd, we’re stuck in a pattern of tiny, weak swell with rubbish winds. The water is sitting at 81°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3° off the average, so you’ll feel that nip. The combined energy is pathetic, barely hitting 25 at Zampa Inside, and it’s all cross-on and choppy. Surfable waves? Not really. It’s a write-off.
We finally get a glimmer on Friday the 24th of July. The morning shows a tiny 2ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind goes glassy. The combined energy is still weak at 54, but those glassy conditions will make the surface look like a mirror. The waves are described as “surfable but very ordinary,” so it’s not a standout, just the best of a bad bunch. Saturday the 25th of July morning is a bit better: 2ft from the west at 9 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the east that will keep things clean. The energy is a bit higher at 82, but it’s still small. For a reef break that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the north, this is a tiny window of okay surf. The crowds are “often” here, so expect company.
After that, it fades again. Sunday the 26th drops to 2ft, and by Monday the 27th we’re back to tiny 1.0ft with strong offshore winds up to 19 mph, which makes paddling out a nightmare. The last few days of the forecast show no swell at all – just wind and chop.
Honestly, if you’re keen, the 24th and 25th of July are your only real shots. The swell direction is west, which matches the optimum swell direction for this spot, and the glassy or light offshore winds will give you the cleanest conditions. But don’t expect any power – it’s a micro-swell. For a beginner, this is fine, but for anyone looking for a proper wave, it’s a grind.
Stay patient, mate. The forecast can always change, but as it stands, this is a lean run.
Rusty.
