The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s coming up for Kojima over the next 16 days. I’ll level with you – it’s mostly flat and ordinary. The water’s a touch colder than average for this time of year, sitting at 81°F, with the anomaly at -2°F, so nothing wild but you’ll feel it.
The first few days are a bust. Wednesday morning the 15th starts with a tiny 2 ft swell from the south, period only 8 seconds – weak and short, combined energy at 67. The wind is cross-offshore from the WSW at 12 mph, keeping the surface clean, but the waves are poor. That theme runs through the weekend. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th offer nothing better – 1 ft to 2 ft, mostly east-northeast, periods around 9–10 seconds, and energy staying below 100. Winds are mainly cross-off or light offshore, but wave quality is still poor or very ordinary.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are more of the same – 2 ft from the east, period 9 seconds, energy in the 70s and 80s. The wind shifts around, but it’s not enough to get excited about. Monday the 20th is still flat with 2 ft easterly and light cross-off winds.
Now, there’s a small glimmer on Tuesday the 21st. The morning sees a glassy surface with 2 ft from the east, period 9 seconds, and combined energy at 90. The wind is dead calm from the NNW at 3 mph – that’s proper glassy. The waves are still “surfable but very ordinary,” so no standouts, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s the cleanest session of the early week.
The real standout, and the only one worth highlighting, comes on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning delivers 3 ft from the east-northeast, period lifting to 11 seconds – that’s a long-period groundswell, meaning better shape and more energy. The combined energy hits 162, so moderate energy that’s a step up. The wind is glassy again from the NNW at 3 mph. This is the best on offer in the whole window. The swell direction is east-northeast, and the optimum swell direction for Kojima is from the southeast, so it’s not a perfect match, but the glassy wind and longer period make it the most promising session. It’s a small wave, but it’ll be clean and lined up. Crowds are sometimes a problem here, so you might have company.
The rest of the week after that drops back down. Thursday the 23rd morning has 2 ft from the east-northeast with light offshore wind, but the afternoon is a washout. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th see the swell shrinking to 2 ft and 1 ft, with periods dropping back. Sunday the 26th morning has a glassy 2 ft from the southeast, but energy is only 96.
Then the last few days – from Monday the 27th through to Thursday the 30th – the swell picks up a bit, with heights reaching 4 ft on Tuesday the 28th morning from the southeast, period 9 seconds, and combined energy at 275. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, with risk of thunderstorms – fresh winds up to 19 mph. The sea state is lumpy and choppy. That’s no good for a surf. The swell is too big for beginners at over 5 ft, but the wind ruins it for everyone. Honestly, with that setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, if you’re paddling out, your best bet is the morning of Wednesday the 22nd – glassy, clean, a bit of groundswell. Otherwise, this stretch is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
