Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let's take a good hard look at what's coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks. The first few days aren't worth paddling out for, that's for sure. It’s flat and choppy, with a real lack of energy.
Things finally perk up on Tuesday morning, July 7th. We get a bit of a pulse from the southeast, but it's only around 2 ft. What makes it interesting is the glassy conditions, with no wind. The energy is weak (150), so it's not going to set the world on fire, but it’s a start. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell is building to 4 ft from the southeast with a period of 16 seconds, and it’s still glassy. The wave energy jumps to moderate (798). That’s looking a whole lot cleaner and more fun for an afternoon session.
Wednesday the 8th of July is where it starts getting serious. Early morning we've got 8 ft swell from the southeast at 18 seconds, and a nice cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong (4129). This is solid, clean surf, but that size is pushing it for beginners – it might be too much. The afternoon gets even bigger, hitting 10 ft from the southeast with the same long period and clean winds, but the energy is very strong (4816). This is getting into expert-only territory, as it's likely too big for the average surfer. That pattern holds for the rest of the week and into the next: a massive, powerful swell from the south-southeast and southeast.
Thursday and Friday, July 9th and 10th, see the swell absolutely cranking. We're talking 13 ft to 23 ft with periods of 17 to 18 seconds. The energy readings are off the charts, getting up to 30008. The wind is strong offshore, so it'll be clean but a massive paddle and a serious challenge for even the most experienced surfers. This is big-wave territory. The standouts in this window? Wednesday morning and afternoon at Steps – if you're an expert and you’ve got the equipment, the conditions on the 8th are where it's at, with that big, clean, long-period groundswell. The swell direction from the SE matches the optimum direction for Steps (SW) pretty well for a solid west-facing break.
The swell starts to drop from Sunday the 12th, but it's still going to be big and powerful for a few more days, with 10 ft on the Sunday. Conditions remain mostly clean. Water temperature is sitting around 82°, which is about average for the time of year.
By Monday the 13th, the swell has backed down to a more manageable 7 ft from the SSE, and the energy is still moderate (831). The winds are clean and cross-offshore. This is much more user-friendly. The next few days see a steady drop in size. By Tuesday the 14th, we've got 5 ft surf. The first half of the week offers clean and fun waves as the big swell fades. The best call in this window is Steps again, especially Monday afternoon the 13th, with 6 ft from the S, clean offshore winds, and moderate energy (578). It should offer some nice, clean waves without the massive size.
From the 15th of July onward, things get small again. Swell heights drop below 3 ft, with weak energy and mixed winds. The last solid chance for a decent wave is probably the 13th and 14th. After that, it gets real marginal. There’s a bit of a glass-off here and there, with some tiny swell, but honestly, it’s not worth getting too excited about.
So, to sum it up: if you’re a solid intermediate, aim for a session on Tuesday evening, July 7th, or Monday and Tuesday of the following week (July 13th-14th). If you're an expert with a gun, Wednesday the 8th is your day.
