The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with the look at Shonan in feet and miles per hour. It’s a slow start, then a big finish, but you gotta wait for it.

For the first part of the run, the surf is tiny. From now until early August, it’s mostly flat or ankle-high. The water temp is 81°, which is about normal for the season, no big deal.

Sunday the 26th has a 0.3ft SE swell with light cross-onshore wind. That little bump doesn’t change much for days. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Thursday the 30th where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is just 1ft with a short 7-second period—nothing to ride.

Things finally start to move around Monday the 3rd of August. A 2ft SE swell shows up with a good 15-second period, and the energy hits 121 (moderate). Winds are light and cross-shore. Still not great, but it’s a sign. On Tuesday the 4th, we get a 3ft ESE swell, also with a 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 463 (strong). Wind stays light and cross-shore. This is where it starts to get interesting.

The real standout is from Wednesday the 5th to Saturday the 8th of August. Wednesday morning brings a 4ft SE groundswell with a long 16-second period and clean cross-offshore wind from the NE. The energy is 651 (strong). It’s clean, lined up, and a good call for a surfer who wants shape without the chaos.

Thursday the 6th steps it up: a 5ft SE swell, still with a 17-second period, and a strong 19 mph NE cross-offshore wind. The energy is 1347 (very strong). This is proper stuff. Experienced surfers, this is your morning.

But the big one is Friday the 7th of August. We’ve got a 10ft SE swell, 17-second period, and clean cross-offshore wind from the north at 22 mph. The energy is through the roof at 4800 (very strong). This is for experts only. The swell is thick and powerful. At Shonan’s beach-reef setup, the long period will give it real punch, but it could also make for some fast, challenging waves. This is the heaviest day on the charts. Saturday the 8th is even bigger at 13ft, but the wind swings onshore from the east, turning it into a lumpy, bumpy mess. The energy is 10246 (extreme), but the quality is gone.

After that, the swell fades through Sunday and Monday, with onshore winds keeping things messy.

For the big-wave crew, Friday the 7th is your target. Thursday the 6th is a solid second choice with cleaner conditions and a bit less size. The rest is either flat or blown.

This is Rusty, out.
