The Lowdown

Alright, grab a seat. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Zampa (The Rock) for the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got to be straight with you—it’s a rough stretch. We’re looking at a solid run of poor conditions, and honestly, there’s not a single day in this entire 16-day window that I’d tell you to drop everything and paddle out.

The first four days are a complete write-off. A severe gale and then storm-force winds are going to have the place totally blown out on Friday the 7th, with a massive 18ft to 24ft of messy, cross-onshore swell. The energy readings are off the charts, in the 11000 to 14579 range, which is just raw, unorganized power. Saturday the 8th isn't any better—the swell drops to nothing, but we’ve got a howling gale making it a complete mess. Sunday the 9th has a bit of a pulse with an 11ft west swell, but the wind is still nasty and the period is too long for this setup, making it break too straight. It’s a pass.

After that, the swell just fades away. From Monday the 10th onwards, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves—most days under 3ft, with the energy readings dropping to triple and then double digits. The wind swings around, but it’s mostly cross or onshore, keeping things lumpy. There are a few clean windows with offshore winds around the 18th and 19th, but the swell is a piddly 1.3ft, and a 10 to 11 second period isn’t going to do anything on this reef. It’s just not worth the paddle.

The water temp is about average for this time of year, so that’s the only thing that’s not a problem. But the surf is a problem. This is a blank run, plain and simple. It’s the kind of stretch that’s more normal for this area when the swells just don’t line up. Keep the board in the car for a week or two, and keep an eye on the charts. It won’t be flat forever.
