The Lowdown

Right, folks, let's have a proper look at what's on offer over the next couple of weeks. I'm not gonna lie to you, it's a pretty bleak picture for the most part. The standout session is a short window on the morning of Thursday the 23rd of July.

The water's sitting at 60°F for the first break we talk about, which is a solid 4°F colder than what's normal for this time of year – that's a proper bite, so make sure you've got the thick rubber on.

The only real blip of hope in this whole 16-day stretch is Thursday morning, the 23rd of July, at Wells Jetties. The swell is coming from the SE at 3ft with a period of 9 seconds, giving the water a moderate energy level (107). The real kicker here is the wind: it's a clean offshore from the NW. It's going to be glassy and clean. The breaks are a beach and jetty setup, and it's a fairly consistent spot, so you can expect a few to roll through. It's an intermediate level wave, and with the offshore wind, it'll be as good as it gets in this forecast. The swell direction is from the SE, and while the guidance says it likes it straight from the East, the conditions on that morning should still make for a few fun ones. Keep in mind, with it being an exposed spot, you might see some other folks out there as it can get crowded sometimes.

For the rest of the period, it's pretty much a washout. The following days are a mix of onshore wind, short-period slop, and tiny swells. After that little window on the 23rd, the quality drops right off again. There's a bit of a bump on the 28th of July with a 5ft SE swell, but the period is a pathetic 6 seconds and the wind is onshore, so it'll be a choppy, lumpy mess – honestly, looks more like a kitesurfing setup than something for a paddle board.

Into the first week of August, we see a few more pulses of 3 to 4ft swell, but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, and the conditions are consistently poor. There is a short window early on the 3rd of August (Monday morning) with a glassy 3ft SE swell, but it's still very ordinary. The best you can say about the whole run is that it's a long, dry spell. Don't get your hopes up.

Signing off, Rusty.
