The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the conditions ahead.

Well, I’ll be honest with you, it’s a flat spell out there at Wells Jetties right now. Don’t bother paddling out for the next few days. From Tuesday the 11th right through to Sunday the 16th of August, we’ve got tiny waves barely cracking 0.3ft to 1ft with weak, short-period energy (combined energy bouncing between 4 and 31). It’s a complete write-off. The water’s a balmy 69°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that doesn’t help the lack of swell. You’re better off with a cold one in the car park.

The first glimmer of hope comes on Monday the 17th. The morning sees a jump to 4ft of SE windswell with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits 113, so there’s some moderate power there, but it’s not going to be pretty. Winds are from the N at 12 mph, which is cross-offshore and keeps the surface clean, but the period is too short for any real quality. The afternoon drops to 3ft. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Not a standout by any stretch.

Things stay mediocre through the week. The 18th and 19th have some swell but onshore winds keep it choppy and messy. The 20th of August offers the best chance for a session. The morning is glassy with an ENE breeze at just 3 mph. We’ve got 2ft of SE swell at 10 seconds. The combined energy is 116, so it’s got a little bit of push, and the glassy conditions will make it look clean. It’s not pumping, but if you’re desperate, that Thursday morning is your window. The break is fairly consistent, but expect crowds *sometimes*.

After that, the pattern stays small and wind affected through to the end of the outlook on Wednesday the 26th. The afternoon of the 26th sees a bump up to 4ft from the S, but a fresh 18 mph S cross-onshore wind will chop it to bits (combined energy 135). It’s more of a kite-surfing situation than a paddle session by that point. Overall, the 16-day window is mostly flat or poor. Keep your board in the shed.
