The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s shaping up for us over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a grim start. For almost a week straight, from now through the 18th of July, there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. We’re talking tiny, weak swell with energy readings barely getting out of the double digits (between 11 and 34). The waves are just too small and weak to bother with. It’s a write-off, plain and simple. There will be some glassy mornings, but even then, you’d be sitting out there on a lake. That kind of blank run is pretty normal for this spot when the swell windows aren't lining up.
Things finally start to wake up around Sunday the 19th. We see a pulse of energy come through, with the combined swell energy jumping to 225. The swell height hits 5ft from the SSE at only 7 seconds. It’s gonna be a bit lumpy and disorganized. Still, the wind is cross-offshore and clean in the morning, so there will be some rideable, if ordinary, waves for the intermediate crew. Sunday afternoon sees the energy drop back to 119, with stronger offshore wind making it cleaner, but the swell drops to 4ft and the period shortens even more to 6 seconds.
The pick of the entire outlook, though, lands on Saturday the 25th of July. We’ve got a nice window during the afternoon at Wells Jetties. The swell comes in at 5ft from the SE with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind goes completely glassy. The combined energy is a solid 163, and it’s a clean, glassy surf. For this stretch, that’s the standout. The morning of the 25th is also decent, with cleaner 3ft surf and cross-offshore winds, but the afternoon glass-off is the moment to be there.
Looking further into the last few days of July, there’s more energy on the charts, but the winds mostly turn onshore or cross-onshore and messy. The 27th shows some size (4ft to 5ft) and moderate energy, but the onshore breeze and short period (7 seconds) make it a messy affair, more for the hardy and less for a clean session.
So, if you’re hanging on for something worthwhile, wait for Saturday the 25th afternoon. Get down to Wells Jetties when that glass settles in. Before that, it’s a long wait with a few average days.
Rusty.
