The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Wells Jetties are a bit of a rough patch. We've got a solid 16-day window to look at, but it's gonna be a slow burn before anything really gets going. The first week is pretty much a write-off, with only tiny, weak swells and poor conditions. The water is a touch warmer than usual for July, sitting at 67° on Tuesday morning, but that's about the only highlight early on.
From Tuesday the 14th right through to the end of the following week, we're looking at a lot of flat spells. The first real glimmer of something better shows up on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd, with a 2ft swell from the SE and a gentle offshore breeze from the NW. It's surfable, but nothing to write home about. The standout moment, and the only time I'd really get excited, is the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds and moderate offshore wind from the NW. The combined energy jumps right up to 347 (moderate), and it's calling for good surf conditions. That's the pick of the next two weeks, right there.
After that, it gets a bit messy again. There's a bit of a pulse on Monday the 27th, with a 4ft swell from the SSE in the morning, but the wind swings around to the S onshore in the afternoon, making it choppy. The energy is strong at 255, but the quality drops fast. For the rest of the run, it's small, weak, and often cross-shore or onshore. For the most part, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially on the afternoons when the wind is up and the swell is short and messy. Keep an eye on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon, that's your best bet. Rusty.
