The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Wells Jetties are a tough watch. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly average wind, so don’t expect much. The first real flicker of something surfable doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 19th of August, and even then it’s pretty ordinary. That’s a solid 13-day gap with no real recommendations, so you’ll be twiddling your thumbs for a while.

Let’s start from the beginning. Thursday the 6th of August through to Tuesday the 18th of August is a write-off. Swell heights are bouncing between 0.3 ft and 2 ft, with periods as short as 3 seconds and as long as 10 seconds, but the energy is pathetic – mostly two-digit numbers like 20 (weak energy). Winds are all over the shop: cross-on, onshore, and occasionally clean, but there’s just no power in the water. The water temperature anomaly is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about. On Friday the 7th of August morning, we get a brief moment of glassy conditions, but the swell is only 1 ft from the SSE with a 6-second period and energy at 14 (weak). It’s flat, mate.

The first day that’s even worth a mention is Wednesday the 19th of August. The morning shows a 3 ft swell from the SSE with a 7-second period and combined energy of 91 (weak, but climbing). Winds are cross-off from the NNE at 15 km/h, keeping it clean. The afternoon stays similar, with 3 ft from the SSE, energy at 61 (weak), and light cross-off from the WSW at 5 km/h. The surf is surfable but very ordinary – a 1-out-of-10 score says it all. It’s small, weak, and the direction is SSE, not the optimum E, so the shape won’t be great at this beach/jetty setup. For beginners, 3 ft is fine, but it’s not exciting.

Thursday the 20th of August and Friday the 21st of August drop back into the poor zone, with 1.0 ft to 1 ft and energy in the 30s (weak). Winds are cross-on or onshore, so it’s back to small and choppy.

If I had to pick a standout, it’s the morning of Wednesday the 19th of August. That’s the only day with a touch of size and clean cross-off wind. But honestly, it’s not a day to get excited about. The swell is short-period (7 seconds) from the SSE, so it’s a weak windswell, not a groundswell. The jetty might offer a bit of shape, but don’t expect much. Crowds are possible at Wells Jetties, but with waves this small, it’ll be quiet.

That’s the story. A long dry spell, one average day, then back to small stuff. Keep your eyes on the charts – forecasts can change. Rusty.
