The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Wells Jetties. Honestly, I’m looking at this forecast and it’s a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves on the cards, and for the most part, the wind is going to be a real pain, coming from the wrong directions to clean things up.

The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your tail off waiting for a set.

The first real chance to get a little something happens on the morning of Thursday, September 3rd. Even then, it’s only 3 ft of short-period 6-second swell from the SE, with a combined energy of just 86 (weak). The wind is a messy cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be pretty. We’re looking at surfable but very ordinary conditions.

The standouts, if you can call them that, come on Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 12th. Friday the 4th morning is your best bet for a clean session. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the ESE, but the wind is glassy. That’s the only time the wind truly cooperates for a proper clean look. It’s not going to be big, but it will be the best quality in the first week.

For the second week, the swell picks up a tiny bit more energy on the 12th of September. The Saturday morning of the 12th sees 3 ft from the SSE with a clean cross-offshore wind, and the energy is at 99 (still weak). The afternoon gets glassy again with 2 ft. That’s the pick of the fortnight.

Everything else is a washout. We have a big gap of tiny, chopped-out surf from the 5th through the 11th, with nothing worth paddling out for. The 14th and 15th offer clean offshore winds, but the swell is barely a ripple at 1 ft to 2 ft, so you’re just going to be bobbing around.

So, to put it plainly: if you’re desperate, hit the glassy, clean mornings on Friday the 4th or Saturday the 12th. Otherwise, bring a book or a fishing rod.

Rusty.
