The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got on the cards for this stretch.
It's a pretty brutal start to the outlook, I'm not gonna lie. For the first week and a half, we're looking at a whole lot of nothing. There's a solid gap of poor surf from now, with only weak, short-period swell and messy winds making for a real desert. The first glimmer of something half-decent doesn't show up until Thursday morning the 20th, but even then it's only a tiny 3ft SE swell going glassy. It's surfable but ordinary. That's really the best we can say until the very end of the month.
The only real standout in this whole forecast is Wells Jetties, and it's a late one. Sunday the 30th of August is where it's at. We get a jump in swell to 5-5ft out of the SE, and what makes it special is the wind. It goes cross-offshore from the North, with a light to gentle breeze, keeping it clean. That combined swell energy jumps right up to over 1000 (1052), and by the afternoon it's hitting 1383—that's strong energy with real grunt. The period is a solid 12 seconds of long-period groundswell. For experienced surfers, this is excellent and worth the wait. The morning is decent for a good paddle, but the afternoon on the 30th is your window. After that, Monday the 31st dawns glassy but the swell drops right back off.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. Mark your calendars for Sunday the 30th of August at Wells Jetties, with that clean 5ft SE swell. It might be a bit much for beginners, but for the rest of us, that's the one.
Rusty.
