The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a hard look at what’s coming for Wells Jetties.

Honestly, folks, it’s a grim stretch ahead. We’re looking at a solid 16-day run with hardly a single session that’d get me out of bed. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly a mess, and the energy just isn’t there. There’s a long gap of poor-to-ordinary conditions right from the start, and it barely lets up.

The first day we can even talk about, Tuesday 22 July, has a bit of bump in the afternoon – 5ft swell from the SSE, but it’s coming in at a short 7 seconds. The energy is moderate, around 202, but the wind is cross-shore and light, leaving a bit of cross-chop. It’s marginal, and I’d call it a waist-high mess. Not worth rushing for.

Thursday 23 July morning is the only real standout, and it’s a sad one to highlight. The sky clears, the wind drops to glassy, and we get 3ft of SE swell with an 8-second period. The energy is weak, around 98, but it’s clean. The break is a beach and jetty setup, so a long-period swell isn’t an issue here, but this isn’t that. It’s small, clean, and uncrowded – decent for a longboard or a beginner, but it’s not going to get the heart pumping.

After that, we slide back into poor conditions. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report.

If you’re looking for the best of a bad lot, Thursday 23 July morning is it. Glassy, clean, small. The rest of the month and into early August is a write-off. The swell drops to 2ft to 2ft, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is mostly weak, in the 20-90 range. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday 28 July afternoon with a glassy spell and 4ft swell, but it’s a risk of thunderstorms, and the period is just 6 seconds – bumpy and weak.

Honestly, it’s one for the kite surfers on most days, not for paddle surfing. The combined energy is weak to moderate at best, and the wind is often too strong or onshore for a decent wave.

Stay patient, check the forecasts, and don’t hold your breath. This is pretty normal for the area – flat spells happen. It won’t stay poor forever.

Rusty.
