The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at Wells Jetties for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, we're looking at a pretty bleak stretch. The first six days are a total write-off – tiny, weak swell barely registering on the energy scale, with a combined energy reading of just 12 to 24. It's a long, flat start to the outlook.

Things finally stir on Monday, August 17th. We get a pulse of 3.6ft swell from the SE, but it's short-period stuff at 7 seconds, plus the wind is a bit messy. The combined energy jumps to 179, which is fair, but the wave comment says it all – "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It's a slight improvement, but nothing to get excited about. The afternoon has a 4.3ft swell from the ENE with a 6-second period, which is even more junky, and the wind is cross-shore. The energy reads 225 (moderate), but the quality isn't there.

Then we drop back into the doldrums. From Tuesday, August 18th, all the way through to the end of the forecast period on Thursday, August 27th, it's a long, drawn-out run of tiny, weak surf. The combined energy readings rarely break 50, and most days are stuck in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. There are a few windows of glassy conditions, like Tuesday morning the 18th and Wednesday afternoon the 26th, but with the swell height barely reaching 1.6ft and periods generally under 10 seconds, it's a session for the longboard or a bodyboard, not a proper surf.

The standout, if you can call it that, is Monday, August 17th. For the morning, a 3.6ft SE swell with a 7-second period, winds from the NNW at 6 mph blowing offshore, which will keep things clean. The energy is 179, which is the highest we see. In the afternoon, it's a 4.3ft ENE swell, but the period drops to 6 seconds, and the wind turns cross-shore, making it look far less appealing. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.

For the rest of the run, honestly, it's a waiting game. The swell is too small and too weak for any decent paddle surfing. The break is a beach/jetty setup, and with the wind mostly cross-onshore or onshore, this looks more like a spot for a kite or a foil than a surfboard. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at Wells Jetties, but they won't be an issue because there's nothing to ride.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Warm (max 27°C on Wed afternoon, min 18°C on Wed night). Wind will be generally light.

Days 5-7 Weather Summary

Heavy rain (total 41mm), heaviest during Sun night. Warm (max 25°C on Mon afternoon, min 17°C on Fri night). Wind will be generally light.
