The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break it down for Wells Jetties. I’ve got the numbers in front of me, and it’s a grim start. For the next week and a half, there’s barely a ripple. The first real chance to get wet doesn’t come until Thursday, September 10th, and it’s a tough one.

The water temperature is 65°F – about a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a nice thought, but doesn’t help the surf.

So, Thursday morning the 10th: we get a pulse of 4ft swell from the S, but it’s short-period, only 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 209. The wind is WSW at 12 mph, a cross-offshore breeze, keeping the surface clean. It’s a beach/jetty setup, so with the swell size, it’s okay for a confident intermediate. But that short period means the waves will be a bit crumbly. It’s marginal, but it’s the first thing we’ve got.

Then we hit a long, flat, gutless run. Day after day of tiny, poor surf. The wind is all over the place – onshore, cross-shore – nothing worth paddling for. The swell energy is consistently in the double digits, which is weak.

The only real standout, and I mean the only one, is Monday, September 21st. That afternoon, we get a solid push of 5ft swell from the ENE, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 327 – strong, moderate energy. The key here is the wind: NW at 9 mph, which is a clean offshore breeze at Wells Jetties. That’s glassy, groomed conditions. The crowd factor says “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but the conditions will be clean. This is the best on offer in the entire 16-day window. It’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it, but it’s a promising target.

So, a long flat spell, one pretty average Thursday, and then a potential Monday session. I’ll be watching the horizon for that one.

Rusty.
