The Lowdown

Alright, let me break it down for you, Wells Jetties.

I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next week or so is a real grind. The water’s at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your butt off waiting for a wave.

We’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions. From Tuesday, August 25th, all the way through the end of the month, it’s mostly small, weak, and choppy. The swell energy is really low, bouncing between 32 and 121 (weak to just barely moderate), with short-period SE swells that just don’t have any punch. Winds are mostly cross-onshore, so the surface is messy. There’s a little window on Saturday morning, August 29th, where it goes glassy for a few hours, but the swell is only 2ft, so you’re scratching for anything. Not worth getting too excited about.

It stays pretty bleak through the first week of September. The swell stays tiny, and the wind keeps messing things up. The only real glimmer comes on September 5th – a Saturday morning. That’s our standout. We get a clean, cross-offshore wind from the west, with the swell jumping to 4ft from the SE, and the energy jumps to 268 (moderate). The period is 11 seconds, which is decent, so it’ll have a bit of shape. That’s the best call in the whole 16-day window. The Saturday afternoon is still clean, but the swell drops a touch and the wind picks up a bit. Sunday the 6th holds some small, clean waves too, but it’s not the same quality.

After that, it fades back into tiny, weak surf with onshore winds through to September 9th. Honestly, it’s a long wait for one decent morning.

So, for the best wave, I’d be looking at that Saturday morning, September 5th, at Wells Jetties. 4ft SE swell, clean offshore breeze, moderate energy. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ve got.

Rusty.
