The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. I’ve scanned the horizon for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta tell ya, it’s looking pretty grim out there. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. For the next 16 days, the models are showing almost nothing in the way of rideable surf. There are a few tiny pulses of energy, but they’re weak, short-period, and mostly tangled up with junky cross-onshore winds. It’s gonna be a waiting game.

The first couple of days, Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th, we're looking at some knee-high slop, maybe 1ft, but it’s coming in at a short 3-4 second period. That’s just wind chop, not real swell. The water’s a bit colder than usual for this time of year, about 67°F, so you’ll want a slightly thicker suit. Conditions are poor, and it’s not worth getting excited about.

After that, from Thursday the 6th through Saturday the 8th, it’s basically flat. Nothing doing. This is where we hit a major lull. There’s a little blip on Sunday the 9th, with the swell bumping up to 3ft, but it’s still a short-period 5-second swell, and the wind is going to be messing it up. Energy is weak, only 31 (moderate at best, but it feels weak). It’s still a no-go for me. Monday the 10th is more of the same, with a bit of cross-shore wind making it messy.

Then, we are looking at a long stretch of absolutely nothing from Tuesday the 11th all the way through to the end of the window on Wednesday the 19th. That’s over a week of flatness. We’ll see some glassy mornings, and Thursday the 13th morning is looking completely calm with the wind going to zero, but there’s no swell to go with it. A total blank. It’s one of those times where you’d have more fun on a skimboard than a surfboard.

To be honest, the setup at Holland is just not going to work with these conditions. It’s a beach/pier setup that needs some decent west in the swell, and we’re just not getting any. With the onshore winds and the lack of any real energy, this looks more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle surfers. The whole run is a write-off. But keep your chin up, this kind of blank run isn't unheard of for the area, and it never stays this poor for long. Forecasts change, and we'll be back in the water before you know it.

Stay salty.

Rusty
