The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Looking out over the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a flat, messy stretch for our shores. There's no real swell event on the cards, and the wind patterns are going to make things tricky. We're looking at a run of poor surf quality right through until the end of the month, and even into the first days of September. It's not going to be a time for scoring epic waves; it's more about picking your moments if you're desperate for a splash.
We’re focusing on Volta da Jurema, a reef break that’s usually super consistent, but even it's going to struggle. The water temp is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there, at least. The main issue is that we've got short-period, weak windswell coming from the east, and the winds are mostly cross or cross-offshore, but with enough strength to put a chop on the surface. It’s all looking a little average. The combined swell energy is weak, with values mostly between 141 and 384, which tells you there’s just not much push behind it.
The first week is frankly a write-off. From Tuesday, August 18th through to the following Monday, August 24th, the surf quality is consistently marked as poor with a score of zero. The swell is around 4ft to 6ft, but it's that short-period stuff, only 6 to 7 seconds, which means it'll be crumbly and weak. The mornings will offer a slightly cleaner look with that SE cross-off breeze, but the afternoons are going to have a cross-chop and won't be worth your time. This is primarily a beginner-friendly break, and the size is manageable, but the poor shape and wind make it a tough paddle for not much reward.
There is a slight bump in size on the morning of Tuesday, August 25th, with the swell pushing 6ft and the energy reading at 384. That’s the biggest number we see, but it's still short-period and the wind is a fresh 30 km/h SE cross-off. It’s still marked as poor.
The pattern just continues into the second week. From August 26th through to September 2nd, we’re still seeing those poor surf conditions and scores of zero, with one marginal call on the 31st. The swell hovers around 5ft to 5ft, always that short-period easterly windswell. The wind stays moderate or fresh, keeping things choppy.
Honestly, there are no standout days here. The whole 16-day window is a bust. With this break being as consistent as it usually is, it’s a bit of a shock to see such a blank run. But it happens. With no real groundswell and constant onshore/cross-shore winds, the setup just isn't there for a proper surf. If the wind stays this strong and the waves remain this poor, this break might be more interesting for the kite-surfing crew than for us paddle surfers. Just keep the board in the car and hope the forecasts change.
Stay salty.
