The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the table for Vale do Lobo over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim stretch. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, which means the wave quality is just not there. We’ve got a long gap of poor conditions from now until we see anything worth a mention. The first real window of interest is a standout on Sunday the 23rd of August, but even that comes with a major caveat.
The best of what’s on offer is the Sunday morning session on the 23rd of August. We’ll see a 3 ft swell from the WSW with a 12-second period, which is a nice long-period groundswell. The combined energy is moderate at 291. That’s the biggest and most promising swell of the whole forecast. The wind is a cross-onshore from the S at 9 mph, which is a bit of a bummer, but it’s the best we’re going to get. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is right about average for this time of year.
The rest of the period is flat or tiny. The Monday morning after that (24th August) sees a 5 ft swell from the WSW, but with onshore winds at 16 mph, it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. After that, we’re looking at waist-high dribble or less for days on end. There’s a chance of a clean, glassy morning on Tuesday the 25th of August, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the WSW and light winds, but the energy is weak (79) and the waves will be very ordinary.
From the 26th of August right through to the 5th of September, it’s a desert of poor surf. A few mornings show clean conditions with tiny waves, but nothing that’s going to get you out of bed. The afternoon winds are almost always onshore or cross-onshore, so the windows are tight and the quality is low.
This is a classic summer lull for the Algarve. It’s not surprising, but it’s frustrating. The Sunday the 23rd is your best bet, and even then, keep your expectations in check. The rest of the time, you’re better off finding something else to do.
Rusty.
