The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s break this down. The only game in town is Vale do Lobo, and I’ll be honest with ya – it’s looking flat and frustrating for the next 16 days. We’re in for a long, slow stretch.
Right now, through the end of August and into September, the waves are tiny and weak. The seawater is around 71°F, right on the money for the season, so no shock there. The swell is small – 1 to 2 feet from the west mostly, with short periods of 7 to 9 seconds. The combined wave energy is in the dumps, usually low two-digit numbers (16 to 58), which is weak. And the wind? A constant problem – onshore and cross-onshore breezes are spoiling these little bumps.
Friday morning the 21st shows a 2-foot wave with a clean, cross-offshore wind from the NNW. It’ll look pretty, but the size is just too small to make you work for it.
The one moment of hope comes early on Sunday, August 23rd. The swell bumps up to 3 feet from the WSW, with a sweet 13-second period – that’s real groundswell, with some punch. The combined energy hits 235 (moderate), which is the best we’ll see all period. A light cross-shore SSE breeze will keep the surface tidy. It’s still not big, but for a few hours, you might find a few fun, lined-up walls. Just keep in mind that the crowds can be a factor here. Any hint of a wave brings everyone out.
After that Sunday morning, it’s back to the struggle. The second week offers a few small, glassy moments – like Thursday morning, September 3rd, with a 2-foot wave and zero wind. But the combined energy is only 40 (weak), and the swell direction is straight west, not the prefered WSW. It’s a longboard or a floaty board kind of day.
Honestly, this setup looks more inviting for a kite surfer when the wind is up and there’s any size. For a regular surfer, it’s a tough slog with big gaps of nothing between any half-decent windows.
If you have to pick a session, make it Sunday the 23rd morning. Otherwise, save your energy.
