The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it for Vale do Lobo.
Staring down the barrel of a 16-day window, and honestly, it's a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak surf with onshore winds messing things up for the most part. The water temp is sitting right around 71°F for the start, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't come until the morning of Friday the 21st of August. We get a tiny bump in swell, a 2ft pulse from the west with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is still super weak at 64, but the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNW. That’ll make it glassy and rideable for a learner on a foamie. It's the only real window in the first week.
After that, it's back to flat, choppy, or onshore junk for days. The morning of the 27th of August shows a bit more promise with a 1ft west-northwest swell and a solid 16 mph cross-offshore wind from the north. The energy is still low, but it'll be clean. Then, the 28th of August morning is interesting – a glassy 1.0ft west swell with a long period of 12 seconds from the east-northeast. That wind is perfect, but the swell is tiny.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is shaping up for the morning of the 1st of September. We're looking at a 1.0ft swell from the west-southwest, but the period jumps to 11 seconds and the combined energy hits 35. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the north-northwest. It's still small, but that longer period will give it a bit more push and shape than the rest of the junk. For a beginner, that's the pick of the fortnight.
Truth is, the whole stretch is a lean run. Vale do Lobo is a beginner-friendly break, and it's "fairly consistent" normally, but with nothing over 2ft and persistent onshore winds, the paddle out is more for the tan than the waves. The best windows are the Friday morning sessions when the wind cleans up, but don't expect barrels.
Rusty.
