The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the surf over the next couple of weeks is virtually non-existent. It’s a pretty grim run for the Algarve coast here. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and poor conditions.
Right now, and for the first week and a half, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. We’re talking about day after day of flat, mushy swells that are barely breaking. The energy is just completely absent. For example, on Tuesday 14th July, you’ve got a 1 ft swell from the west with a period of just 6 seconds and a combined energy of only 15 – that’s barely a ripple. It’s a similar story right through to the 25th. The winds are sometimes glassy or light, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a flat, calm lake. There’s a gap of about 12 days where there’s absolutely no recommendation to be had.
Now, the only faint glimmer in this whole outlook comes right at the end. On the morning of Sunday 26th July, we might finally see a pulse of life. The swell is still tiny at 1 ft, but it’s from the SW with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy ticks up to 54. It’s still not big, but that longer period suggests a bit more shape. The wind is offshore from the north, so it’ll be clean. It’s only a 1 out of 10, but it’s the only time the forecast uses the word “surfable.” This is a very small window for a very small wave.
For the rest of the second week, it’s more of the same: tiny swells, and by the afternoon of the 25th, the wind picks up and makes a mess of things. The morning of the 29th looks glassy again with a 1 ft swell and energy of 41, but it’s still a long way from being any kind of standout.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, Vale do Lobo is a beginner-friendly spot, and on those rare glassy mornings with a tiny bit of west swell, you might get a few knee-high sliders. But for anyone looking for a real wave, this is a blank run. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. It’s a tough stretch, but it won’t stay this flat forever. Forecasts can change.
