Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s cooking in our little corner of the Algarve. I've got to be straight with you – this 16-day run is a tough one for Vale do Lobo. We're looking at a proper flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. The water is sitting at 71°F which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only good news.
The first chance for something that even resembles a wave comes up on Sunday morning, July 5th. But honestly, we’re talking tiny 0.7ft dribblers from the west with a weak period of 10 seconds. The combined swell energy is a measly 11 (weak energy) and the wind is a cross-off from the ESE at 9 mph, keeping it clean, but there’s just no push. It’s poor. That flatness stretches all the way through the first week and into the second. Day after day we see 0.3ft to 0.7ft of west swell, plenty of sunny skies, but no juice. Wednesday morning the 8th might give you a moment of glassy calm with NNE winds at 3 mph, but on a 0.3ft wave, you’re just bobbing around. Not worth paddling out.
We finally see a tiny blip of hope late in the second week. On Friday morning, July 10th, there’s a bit of a pulse: 2ft from the WNW, but with a miserable 4-second period. Combined energy of 20 (still weak). A light cross-shore NW breeze at 6 mph keeps the surface tidy, but that period is so short the waves will just crumble. Still poor. Saturday morning the 11th offers the biggest swell of the whole forecast – 3ft from the WNW with a 6-second period. Combined energy climbs to 57 (still weak though). Winds are NW at 9 mph, cross-shore, giving us a clean-ish look. This is probably the most rideable it gets across the entire 16 days, but it’s still only worth a look for absolute beginners on a foamie.
The rest of the run, from the 12th through to the 20th of July, is a repetitive cycle of tiny west swells, onshore winds, and cross-chop. A few mornings have light breezes, but the swell never cracks 1ft consistently, and the energy stays in the weak range. There's nothing here that gets a surfer's heart rate up. Thursday afternoon the 16th shows a jump to 3ft from the WNW again, with a 5-second period and energy of 56, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the WSW at 22 mph, creating lumpy, blown-out junk. That’s not a surf forecast, that's a kite-surf forecast, and even then it's marginal.
Honestly, for the next two and a half weeks, if you absolutely have to get wet, keep expectations on the floor. This is one of those classic summer flat spells for the area. It won't last forever – forecasts change – but right now, the best move is to wax the longboard for some ankle-biters and enjoy the sun. Keep your eyes peeled for any last-minute bumps.
Rusty.
