The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's break down what The Wedge has in store.
First thing, it's quiet. Real quiet. For over a week, there’s basically nothing going on but onshore wind and no swell energy. You can leave the board in the shed for a bit.
The first real chance to get wet isn't until Monday, July 20th. That morning, the wind goes dead glassy, and we get a little 1.6m swell from the ENE, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 502. That glassy surface is going to make it feel way better than the numbers suggest. It's a clean start, and the crowds are only *sometimes* a problem, so you might have it to yourself for a bit. The afternoon stays clean with a 1.5m swell. That Monday morning is the one.
But the real standout is the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. Swell bumps up to 1.7m from the east, the period hits 11 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 695. The wind is a light cross-offshore out of the SW. The forecast says "very good surf conditions." That is the session you want. The energy, the direction, and the clean wind all line up perfectly.
The next few days get messy with wind and rain, which is a bummer because there’s still a decent 1.6m swell running. That gets ruined by onshore winds.
Then, the end of the outlook cleans up nicely. On the 28th and 29th of July, we see strong offshore NW winds. The swell drops to around 1.2m, but the period is a long 13 seconds. That kind of groundswell wraps around the point just right, and with a clean offshore breeze, it’s going to be smooth, lined-up waves. Not the biggest, but perfect for a long, relaxed session.
So, in short: first week is a wash. Get on it Monday the 20th for a glassy one, go all-in on Thursday the 23rd for the best day, and then enjoy the clean, mellow waves at the end of the month.
Rusty.
