The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've had a good look at the charts for The Wedge, and it's a pretty lean run ahead. The next couple of weeks are going to test your patience.
The first real chance to get wet won't be until Monday, July 20th. Before that, we've got a few days of nothing worthwhile. Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th is basically a write-off – small, junky, and not worth paddling out.
Okay, let's talk about the best of a quiet bunch. Monday, July 20th, is your best bet. Early morning, the wind is glassy from the west, and we've got a 5ft east swell running. The combined energy is moderate (477), and the period is a decent 10 seconds. It's a solid, clean wave for a Monday morning session. The crowds are a known factor here – they can be a problem – so get in early.
Tuesday, July 21st, is another decent option. Again, glassy morning conditions with a westerly offshore breeze. The swell is a touch smaller at 4ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (294). It'll be clean but a little less powerful than Monday.
Later in the week, we drop off quickly. Thursday, July 23rd, has a clean morning but only 2ft waves. The rest of the run is flat or tiny, with poor surf conditions all the way through to the start of August. The water temperature is about 65°, which is pretty average for this time of year.
So, to sum it up: the standout is Monday morning, July 20th, with a close second on Tuesday morning, July 21st. After that, it's a long, flat gap. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, it's a couple of dawn patrols and then a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
