The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – this is a tough one to call. The Wedge is the only break on the menu for the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s looking like a bit of a desert for surfers.
We’ve got a 16-day window, but it’s pretty grim. From now until the end of the month and right through the first week of September, the swell is tiny and the waves are mostly junk. We are talking days and days of nothing to get excited about.
Let’s run through it. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a write-off. Tiny little 1 to 2ft pulses, all messed up by cross-onshore winds. Tuesday the 25th isn't much better with a weak 3ft NE swell with a short 7-second period and weak wave energy (88). The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is just about normal for this time of year.
There’s a slight flicker on Wednesday morning the 26th. The combined swell energy hits 95 – still weak – but the wind is cross-off and conditions are clean. The swell is still only 3ft from the ENE with an 8-second period. It’s surfable, but you wouldn’t put it on the calendar.
Moving into the second week, it’s more of the same. The best we see is on Monday morning, September 7th. A clean 3ft NE swell with a 5-second period arrives with gentle offshore wind. The combined energy is 72 (weak). It’s surfable, but again, very ordinary conditions.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day run, there isn't a single standout. The Wedge is an inconsistent spot at the best of times, and this is one of those long, flat spells. It’s not looking like a classic Wedge session at all. The swell is too small, the directions are from the ENE which isn’t its optimum NE angle, and the power just isn’t there. It’s more of a longboard or a swim fins kind of week.
No big waves to report, no real clean windows. Keep the board in the car, but maybe don’t rush.
Rusty.
