Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Wedge over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s on offer for The Wedge. This reef break is a proper advanced spot, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ve gotta be ready to wait for the good ones. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no worries with a wetsuit.
The first bit of the run is a bit of a slow start. Saturday, the 11th of July, has some small swell around 4 ft from the SE, period at 9 seconds, and a light NW wind making it cross-off. Combined energy’s at 341 (moderate), and it’s clean. Not a standout, but it’s a gentle intro. That afternoon gets messy, though, with a cross-on wind, so don’t expect much.
Sunday, the 12th, the swell drops to 3 ft from the ESE, still a 10-second period, but the wind turns WNW at 15 mph, offshore. Energy’s down to 108 (weak), so it’s surfable but ordinary. Monday and Tuesday are basically flat with energy at 0–7, so don’t bother. Wednesday’s a write-off with rain and lumpy cross-shore wind.
Now, Thursday, the 16th, things start to change. A 7 ft SE swell rolls in, but the period’s short at 7 seconds, and the wind’s cross-shore with light rain. Energy’s 481 (moderate), but the conditions are marginal. Friday’s similar—sizey but choppy with cross-on winds.
The standout is Sunday, the 19th of July. This is the one to circle. Early morning, you’ve got an 8 ft swell from the E, period at 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy—just the slightest air from the NW. Energy is a massive 2477 (very strong wave energy). It’s glassy, clean, and the break will be firing for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds the same swell with ENE glassy conditions, energy at 1328 (strong). This is your best window, but it’s over 8 ft, so experts only—beginners, stay well clear.
Monday, the 20th, keeps that 8 ft E swell, period stretching to 12 seconds (longer period groundswell), with WNW offshore wind at 6 mph. Energy’s 1709 (very strong). Clean again, but at that size, it’s still for the crew who know what they’re doing. The beach break setup might make it a bit straight with that long period, but the reef here handles it.
The rest of the week into the 26th sees the swell drop slowly. The 25th and 26th have 5 ft to 7 ft ESE swells, periods around 10–11 seconds, and offshore or cross-off winds. Energy’s moderate (521–898), and the conditions are clean. Good for a confident session, but not the magic of that Sunday.
Crowds? The Wedge is known to get busy sometimes, so get in early on the standout days.
Overall, the first week is a dud, but that Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are the ones to aim for. After that, it’s steady but nothing wild.
Rusty.
