The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks. Right now, things are looking pretty flat and ordinary, but there’s a bit of a pulse building towards the end of the month that might get the heart rate up.
We’re starting off with a bit of a lull. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd offer only small, weak surf. The best of a quiet bunch is Friday morning at Kiddies Corner, with a small 2ft swell from the ENE and a cross-off breeze keeping things clean, but the wave energy is weak (47) and it’s just surfable, nothing to write home about. Water temps are sitting at 63°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year. Saturday morning is even smaller at 0.7ft and basically flat.
Sunday the 23rd brings a bit more life. The morning session is the pick of the early days, with a glassy 3ft south swell. The period stretches to 11 seconds, giving it a bit more push (175 combined energy). That’s a long period groundswell, so while it’ll wrap in clean, it might break a bit straight at this beach break. It’s still a beginner-friendly height, so a good one for a learner session.
From Monday the 24th right through to Friday the 28th morning, it’s a grind. Small, messy, and mostly cross or onshore winds. The waves are there but the conditions are ordinary. It’s the kind of stretch where you’re better off waiting.
Then, on Saturday the 29th, we finally get a standout. The afternoon session at Kiddies Corner sees a bump in swell to 4ft from the south, with a cross-off breeze from the WNW. The combined energy climbs to 213 – moderate and building. The wind is light and clean, so expect some fun, shapey waves for the average surfer. It’s not a monster, but after the flat spell, this is the best on offer in the near term.
The real highlight, though, is Sunday the 30th morning. This is the one to circle on the calendar. A 4ft ESE swell, glassy conditions with a whisper of a NNW breeze, and a combined energy of 300. That’s moderate, solid energy, and with the glassy surface, Kiddies Corner should be looking crisp and clean. It’s still a beginner-friendly size, but the quality will be a big step up. This is your best chance for a proper session.
The afternoon on Sunday the 30th gets bigger, with the swell jumping to 6ft from the ESE, but it turns onshore and questionable, so the morning is the clear winner. By Monday the 31st, the swell is still up around 5ft to 6ft, but with a cross-off wind and moderate energy (596 in the morning), it might be a bit much for the beginners and better for the experienced crew.
After that, the first week of September looks like a step back into small, choppy, or blown-out conditions. Thursday the 3rd has a 4ft NE swell, but it’s messy. Friday the 4th afternoon gets a strong 25 mph offshore wind from the WSW, which will groom the 2ft E swell into clean lines, but that wind is going to make paddling a real fight. It’s not a relaxed surf.
So, bottom line: the best surf on offer is Sunday the 30th of August morning at Kiddies Corner. Clean, glassy, and with a decent groundswell. Don’t sleep on it. A close second is the Saturday 29th afternoon session. The rest of the window is mostly a waiting game, but that one morning makes it worth sticking around.
Rusty.
