The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Kiddies Corner. This spot is a consistent little beginner-friendly nook, and while there are some rough patches in the outlook, there are a couple of windows that are going to be well worth the paddle out.

The first real action we’re looking at is a bit of a slow burn. Friday morning the 17th kicks off with a tiny 3 ft S swell, glassy conditions, and a light southerly breeze. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s pretty ordinary – the energy is weak (108). The rest of the weekend is a write-off thanks to choppy cross-onshore winds and poor surf conditions, so you’re better off doing something else on Saturday and Sunday.

We’ve got a gap from Friday afternoon all the way through to Sunday afternoon with no real recommendations.

Then Monday morning the 20th is where it starts to get interesting. A clean 5 ft ENE swell rolls in with glassy conditions and a light WNW offshore breeze. The energy is solid (593) and the water temp is about average for this time of year. This is one of the best windows in the whole outlook – clean, head-high waves with some push. Get on it early, because the afternoon gets choppy again.

Tuesday morning the 21st is another glassy gem with a 4 ft ENE swell and light offshore NW wind. It’s a touch smaller than Monday, but still very surfable for a beginner-friendly wave. The energy drops to 350, but the conditions are clean.

The middle of the week from the 22nd into the 23rd is small and weak, with energy dropping below 200. Not much to write home about.

Now, here’s the big one. Friday morning the 24th of July sees a massive 12 ft S swell with a 10-second period, blowing in under a moderate offshore SW wind. The wave energy is enormous (3926). But here’s the catch – this is way too big for this break. The forecast literally says the swell is too big for Kiddies Corner. This is a warning sign for beginners, and even for most intermediates, this is a day to watch from the beach. It’s more of a spectacle than a paddle.

The following Saturday morning the 25th settles back to a much more manageable 5 ft S swell with offshore W wind, making for a clean, fun session if you missed the earlier window.

Sunday the 26th is still sizeable at 8 ft (1615), but with a moderate cross-offshore breeze that keeps it clean. This is for experienced surfers only.

Monday the 27th of July is another standout. A 5 ft SE swell with a very long 12-second period, glassy offshore WSW wind, and clean conditions. The wave energy is 785. This is a proper groundswell, and it will wrap in nicely here. The length between sets will make the paddle out easier, and the shape should be excellent.

The last week of July and into early August trails off. Tuesday the 28th has a clean 4 ft S swell, but it’s not as punchy. By Thursday the 30th, the swell drops to a tiny 1 ft, but with a very long 17-second period (188 energy) – it’s glassy, but it’s barely a ripple. Friday the 31st and into August 1st gets messy with onshore winds and rain, so that’s a no-go.

Overall, your best bets are Monday morning the 20th and Monday morning the 27th of July. Both have clean, offshore wind, solid swell, and manageable size. The big swell on the 24th is a beast, but it’s not for paddling here.

Stay stoked.
