The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, talking about Kiddies Corner for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – the start of this stretch is a bit of a bust. We’ve got days of weak, choppy, or just so-so conditions, so don’t rush to wax up.
From Sunday the 23rd through Wednesday the 26th, it’s pretty grim. Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, the swell is tiny and weak – combined energy hanging around 120 to 347 (weak to moderate) – and the wave quality is poor. The water temp is sitting at 63°F, which is about average for this time of year. Save your energy.
Now, Thursday the 27th morning is where things start to flicker. There’s a glassy 5ft S swell rolling in, with a nine-second period. The combined energy jumps to 486 (moderate), and the wind is dead calm. That’s going to be clean, but it’s a short window. The afternoon gets ruined by onshore wind.
Friday the 28th morning is your first real highlight. The swell drops a touch to 3ft S, but we get a solid 9 mph offshore wind from the WSW. Combined energy is 274 (moderate), and it’s clean. That’s a good, fun morning for a beginner-friendly wave.
But the standout – the one to circle on your calendar – is Saturday the 29th morning. This is the best of the whole run. We’ve got a 6ft SSE swell, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW. Combined energy hits 532 (moderate to strong), and it’s clean. The crowds are listed as “often” here, so expect company, but for the best waves in the window, this is it.
The second week gets quiet again. Sunday the 30th has some size – 7ft S swell in the afternoon – but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, with a massive combined energy of 1745 (very strong). That’s a messy, powerful ocean, not great for a paddle. Monday the 31st is similar with a 5ft SSE swell and a 12-second period, but the wind is onshore again. The long period (12 seconds) suggests some groundswell energy, but the onshore wind will chop it up.
The rest of the first week of September is small and weak. Tuesday the 1st afternoon offers a small window of 3ft SSE swell with offshore wind, but it’s tiny. After that, from the 2nd to the 7th, it’s mostly flat or very weak, with combined energy mostly under 100 (weak). There’s a long gap of poor to ordinary surf from the 2nd through the 7th.
So, if you’re keen, aim for Thursday the 27th morning for a glassy session, Friday the 28th morning for clean offshore waves, and absolutely do not miss Saturday the 29th morning – that’s the pick of the litter.
Rusty.
