The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the coming weeks.
The main action is at Kiddies Corner. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, but hang tight, because there’s some real promise later on. We’ve got a mix of clean conditions and some solid pulses of swell to look forward to.
Starting off on Monday, July 20th, the morning is a bit special. Glassy conditions with a 6ft swell from the east, with a period of 11 seconds. The combined swell energy is sitting at 819 (moderate), and it’s looking like a great session for a beginner-friendly wave. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The afternoon though, the wind swings cross-on and it gets messy, so make the most of the early.
Tuesday, July 21st, is a write-off. The swell drops to 4ft, and the wind is all over the shop with cross and cross-on conditions. Avoid it.
Wednesday, July 22nd, offers a little hope. The morning brings a light offshore wind, cleaning up a small 3ft swell from the east-northeast. The energy is weak (192), so it’s not going to be firing, but it’s surfable and clean. The afternoon goes glassy again, but still small.
Thursday, July 23rd, is a tough one. The morning has a clean offshore breeze, but the swell is tiny at 2ft, with energy down to 84 (weak). The afternoon gets a fresh breeze, making it pretty poor overall.
Now, Friday, July 24th, is a standout. The morning brings a clean 6ft swell from the south, with an 11-second period and combined energy of 562 (moderate). The wind is cross-off and light, so the waves will be clean and well-shaped. The afternoon goes glassy, with a 5ft south swell, making it a great day overall. Get out there.
Saturday, July 25th, is a bit more tricky. The swell is 4ft from the south, with a long 12-second period. The energy is moderate (406), but the wind is stronger in the morning, making it a bit marginal. The afternoon gets a cross-shore wind, so it’s not the best.
Sunday, July 26th, morning is clean again with a 6ft south swell, moderate energy (494), and a cross-off breeze. The afternoon turns messy with cross-on wind, so get your session in early.
Monday, July 27th, through Wednesday, July 29th, is a flat spell. The swell drops below 3ft, and the energy is weak. A few clean windows, but nothing worth paddling out for. This is a good stretch of days to do other things.
Then, on Thursday, July 30th, things get serious. The morning brings a 8ft south swell, with a period of 11 seconds, and combined energy of 1302 (strong). The wind is offshore and light, making it clean and powerful. This is for experienced surfers only—it’s too big for beginners. The afternoon swell jumps to 10ft with a 13-second period, and an energy reading of 2925 (very strong). The break is predicted to be too big, so only the most skilled should even think about it.
Friday, July 31st, is even bigger. The swell holds at 10ft to 12ft from the south, with long periods of 12-13 seconds. The energy is massive (5798 in the afternoon). The wind is cross-off in the morning, but the afternoon brings rain and a cross-chop. This is expert territory only.
Saturday, August 1st, the swell eases slightly to 8ft from the south-southeast, with moderate energy (1604). The wind is light and cross-shore, but the conditions are still marginal. Not ideal.
Sunday, August 2nd, the morning is clean again with a 8ft south swell, energy of 2016 (strong), and a light cross-off breeze. This is another excellent session for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets choppy with cross-on wind.
Monday, August 3rd, and Tuesday, August 4th, see the swell dropping back to 6ft and 5ft, with improving conditions. Tuesday morning is glassy, making it a nice, clean session for a wider range of surfers.
To sum it up: the best bets are Friday, July 24th for a clean, fun day with a moderate south swell, and Thursday, July 30th and Sunday, August 2nd for the experienced crew looking for powerful, clean waves. The long-range calls for the end of July and start of August are promising, but we’ll see how they shape up.
Rusty.
