The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next two weeks are looking pretty lackluster for Kiddies Corner. We've got a long stretch of small, weak, and often messy surf ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for any hero waves just yet.
We’re kicking things off with a real flat spell. From Monday the 17th through to Saturday the 22nd, it’s a whole lot of nothing. We’re looking at waves under 3ft with weak energy, most of the time under 100 (values like 29 to 77). There’s a bit of swell on Wednesday the 19th morning, but the wind is howling onshore and it’s chopped to bits. If you’re a beginner, you might get a few whitewash rides on the Thursday morning glass-off, but honestly, it’s a lot of effort for not much reward. The water temp is sitting around 64°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The first real sign of life shows up on Sunday the 23rd. The morning has a tiny, clean 0.6ft bump, but the energy is still weak (76). Then it just falls apart again. We go through another stretch of small, mostly poor conditions right up until the end of August. There are a few mornings with clean conditions, but the swell is just too small to be worth a paddle. The energy values hover in the low to mid 100s (101 to 206), which is still pretty weak.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. That final week is where the ocean finally wakes up. The tail end of the month and the start of September looks promising, but it comes with a big catch. Starting Saturday the 29th, we see a solid push in size, with waves jumping up to 6ft and the energy climbing fast (396 and 430). The problem is the wind. It’s a fresh, cross-shore breeze, making for lumpy and messy conditions. It’s not going to be pretty.
Sunday the 30th sees the swell get even bigger, up to 8ft in the afternoon, with strong energy (900). But again, that cross-shore wind is killing it. It’s big and chunky, with a lot of power, but it’s strictly for experienced surfers who don’t mind a fight. This is not a day for beginners.
The standout window looks like Monday the 31st into Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a solid, strong southwest groundswell hitting with a lot of energy (1198). The morning of the 31st looks the best, with 7ft of swell and a clean, cross-offshore wind. It’s going to be powerful and should have some real push behind it. The period drops to 8 seconds, which is a shorter period for that size, so it might be a bit sectiony and less lined up. Then, on Tuesday morning, the swell eases to 5ft, but the period stretches out to a much nicer 13 seconds. The wind is light, but it’s cross-shore, which might create a few ripples. This is a long period groundswell, so it will likely favor a point break or reef setup more than a straight beach break. Get your biggest board ready.
So, there you have it. The first ten days of this outlook are a write-off. But that final run from the 29th onward has some serious potential. The best bet is Monday morning the 31st if you want size, or Tuesday morning the 1st if you want cleaner, more powerful swell. It’s long-range, so it’s still a bit of a gamble, but it’s the only real surf on the cards.
This is Rusty, signing off. Keep an eye on the forecasts and stay stoked.
