The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna level with you. Right now, the outlook for Swanage is pretty grim. We’ve got a 16-day window, and for the first ten days or so, there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The spot is very sheltered and rarely breaks, so it needs a near-perfect combo of swell and wind to fire, and that just isn’t happening. The water temperature is sitting at 70°, which is a full 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and it feels like bathwater out there.
From Monday 17th August through to around Wednesday 26th August, it’s mostly flat or tiny. There are a few sessions with a little pulse, like Thursday 20th morning – we get a 1ft swell from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds and a gentle offshore wind, but combined energy is only 29, so it’s weak. The pick of that early period might be Friday 21st afternoon, when the wind goes glassy with a 0.7ft lump from the WSW, but it’s still only 5 energy – just a dribble. Honestly, the whole first week is a non-starter.
The real standout window opens up on Wednesday 26th August. The afternoon brings a 6ft swell from the SW, period of 6 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 212 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is cross-off, so it’ll be clean. Still, the period is short, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and soft. But compare that to the nothing we’ve had, it’s a step up. Then Thursday 27th morning is the best of the whole run: a 4ft swell from the WSW, period of 8 seconds, with glassy conditions and 318 energy. That’s the gem. The wind is off, the waves will have some shape, and the crowd profile at Swanage says sometimes, so you might have company. With the swell direction from the WSW (which matches the optimum SW direction pretty well), and it being a rare, inconsistent spot, this is a genuine moment.
After that, Saturday 29th morning sees a 5ft WSW swell with 472 energy – that’s strong wave energy – and a cross-off wind, but it’s a 10-second period, so it’s decent. The afternoon is offshore but a bit stronger. By Sunday 30th afternoon, there’s 6ft from the SW but only 7 seconds, so it’s a bit messy. The action fades into early September with smaller, cleaner leftover waves.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a write-off. The best surf is on Thursday 27th August morning – glassy, 4ft, clean, with strong energy. That’s the one to aim for. The rest is just small, weak, and inconsistent. Get in the water when you can, but don’t expect much.
