The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window for Swanage, and truth is, there’s barely a whisper of rideable surf on the horizon. The first real recommendation doesn’t show up until Thursday the 30th of July, so we’re looking at a solid two-week gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, the energy is flat, and the wind is usually messy. It’s one of those runs where the ocean just switches off – it happens here more than we’d like.
The only flicker of life comes right at the tail end. On Thursday morning the 30th, we finally see a pulse of swell – 2ft from the WSW, with a weak 6-second period. The combined energy is a meagre 57 (that’s weak, barely enough to push a foamie). The wind is cross-offshore from the WSW, so the surface might clean up a bit, but don’t expect any power. By Thursday afternoon, the wind picks up to 18 mph from the WSW, still cross-off, but the swell drops to 2ft from the SW, energy down to 50. It’s a short-period, low-energy windswell at best.
Then into Friday morning the 31st, we get a little more hope: the swell height bumps up to 7ft from the WSW with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 284 (moderate). That’s the biggest of the whole run. The wind is cross-off from the SW at 18 mph, so it’ll be clean on the face. But here’s the catch – 7ft at short period is a lumpy, crumbly mess at a beach break like Swanage, which is very sheltered. That size is pushing into expert-only territory, and the short period makes it unpredictable. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no dramas there.
Bottom line: the whole 16 days is a write-off for surf. Two weeks of flatness, then one morning that might give a few closeout lumps for the brave. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
