Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for the Swanage area. Over the next sixteen days, the outlook really is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch with no surf worth getting wet for. The first chance of anything at all isn’t until Friday, July 10th, but even then it’s a tough sell.
From right now, we’re looking at a pretty quiet period. Through Tuesday the 7th and into Wednesday the 8th, there’s barely a ripple, and the combined swell energy is only 2 to 3 (very weak). Thursday the 9th is glassy in the morning, which is always nice to look at, but the swell is just 0.3 ft, so you’d be bobbing around doing nothing.
Friday the 10th brings a pulse of east-southeast swell pushing 2 ft, but the period is a short 4 seconds, and you’ve got onshore wind. The energy sits at just 14 (weak). It’s not going to be pretty. Saturday the 11th is the closest we get to a bump, with the swell reaching 3 ft from the east, period of 5 seconds, and combined energy up to 48 (still weak). But with moderate cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be choppy and messy. That’s really the best of a bad bunch.
From Sunday the 12th onward, it gets even harder. The wind picks up strong, and the swell drops right back to near-flat conditions. There are days with no surf at all. There is a stretch from the 12th through until the 18th of July where it is continuously poor, with most model runs showing nothing rideable. The water is currently a very unusual 64°F which is nearly 5°F warmer than you’d expect for July, so at least a summer dip will be warm.
To be honest, if you’re looking for a standout day, Saturday the 11th is the only one on the cards, and it is only for the most desperate. The break here at Swanage rarely breaks properly under these conditions, and this setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer looking for clean waves. It’s a lean run, but that’s normal for the area; forecasts can shift, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
