The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for Swanage. We’re looking at the next 16 days, and honestly, the first week and a half is a write-off. There’s nothing to get excited about until the very end of the month. So, hold your horses.
Swanage itself is a very sheltered spot, and rarely breaks as it is. Over the next week, we’ve got nothing but tiny, weak swell with rubbish wind. The water is way warmer than usual for the time of year, sitting at 66°, which is a good 6° above normal for July – that’s very unusual, but it doesn’t help the waves. You’ll be looking at a solid 10-day stretch of flat, poor conditions before we see any real pulse.
The only glimmer of hope comes right at the end of the period. On Wednesday, the 29th of July, in the afternoon, a bit of swell pushes in. It’s a short period 8ft swell from the SW (7 seconds), with a cross-offshore wind. The combined energy jumps up to 606 (moderate), but it’s still being called poor surf conditions. That’s a lot of water moving around but it’s likely messy and closed out for the break.
The best of the best, and the only time I’d even consider a paddle, is on Thursday, the 30th of July. In the afternoon, the wind goes glassy, and we’ve got a 8ft SW swell (7 seconds, 497 combined energy). That’s a solid amount of juice for here, but it’s a short-period swell, which means it’ll be a bit lumpy and won’t have that long, clean wall. Still, with glassy conditions, it’s the only chance for a clean, surfable wave. It’s probably one for experienced surfers only though, as it’s over 8ft in the morning, and still pushing 8ft in the afternoon. The crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, so you might have a few mates out, but it won’t be a circus.
Honestly, for the rest of the time, the setup looks more interesting for kiteboarding than paddle surfing, given the onshore winds and mushy conditions. Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, it’s a long wait for one afternoon.
Rusty.
