Right, gather ‘round me babbies, it’s your old mate Rusty. Gotta say, lookin’ at this 16-day picture for Swanage… well, it’s a bit of a tough one, innit? We’ve got a right proper dry spell on our hands. The whole run is littered with “poor surf conditions” from start to finish. There’s a massive gap right from the get-go with absolutely nothing worthwhile to report for the entire 16-day window.
Normally I’d tell ya not to stress, because things can change, but the guidance reckons Swanage is “rarely breaks” and “very sheltered,” so a blank run like this is pretty much par for the course here. You’ve got to be a local who knows the secret handshake to score anything, and even then, the stars have to align.
For the whole of July 3rd right through to July 18th, the combined energy is weak as dishwater, barely ever cracking 45 (weak energy) on the scale. The swell is either non-existent or just tiny little wind slop. If you’re desperate, you might try to paddle out on Saturday the 5th when we have a little 1 ft of swell from the W, and a nice offshore wind out of the WNW at 6 mph on the morning, which will keep the surface clean. But with a period of just 10 seconds and only 16 (weak energy), it’s barely a ripple. The 0.7 ft from the WSW on Friday the 3rd morning is cross-on and just not worth the effort.
Even when the wind does go offshore, like on Sunday the 6th afternoon, the swell is just gone. We get a couple of 1 ft bumps from the west on a few afternoons with clean conditions, but it’s not surf. It’s a lake. The water temp is about 64°, which is roughly 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, and you’d be better off just having a nice float on a lilo.
There’s nothing here for beginners because there’s nothing to ride, and certainly nothing for the experts either. Honestly, if I were you, I’d be looking for a spot that actually knows how to catch a swell. This is a proper dud for the next two weeks and a bit. There are no standouts, no hope spots. Just a whole lot of nothing with the odd puff of offshore wind.
So, I’m signing off, a little bit glum. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath for Swanage.
Rusty
