The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for Swanage. The whole 16-day window looks flat and, frankly, not worth getting excited about. The first decent surf doesn’t even show up until the 15th of July, and even then it’s a real struggle.
The first potential session on the 15th morning sees a short-period, weak 4ft east swell, but it’s blowing 16 mph cross-on from the ENE, churning up a choppy mess. The energy is weak (120), and the water is a weird 66°F – that’s 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual. The afternoon is even smaller. The next few days are a parade of tiny, weak swells and poor conditions. There’s a gap from the 15th all the way through to the 24th of July with nothing worth paddling for.
Honestly, the only thing that looks remotely interesting is the very end of the run. On the 24th of July, we get some offshore WNW wind, but the swell is next to nothing – just 0.3ft. The 25th of July is similar, with clean offshore wind but a tiny 0.3ft swell. The 28th of July morning has a bit more size, with 3ft from the east and a light offshore wind, but the energy is still low (30).
The best on offer is the morning of the 28th of July for Swanage. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but with a light offshore wind and a waist-high bump from the east, it’s the cleanest you’ll get. The 29th of July morning sees a 0.3ft west swell with a 11-second period, but it’s getting cross-chopped by 16 mph winds. The 30th of July is glassy but flat.
For a spot that rarely breaks, this is a normal blank run. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, the board stays in the car.
Rusty.
