Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Swanage has in store for us. I gotta be straight with you – this is one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t playing ball. The whole 16-day window is a tough one, with barely a ripple worth getting wet for. There’s a big gap from now until the second week with no real surf on offer.
We start off on July 7th, Tuesday morning. The swell is tiny, just 0.3 ft from the west with a 9-second period. The combined energy is a feeble 2 (weak energy). There’s a gentle offshore breeze though, so the water is clean, but honestly, you’re looking at flat conditions. Afternoon is much the same, 0.7 ft west swell but the wind picks up to a moderate 12 mph offshore, still clean but still flat.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th are more of the same – 0.3 ft west swell, light onshore or cross-shore winds, combined energy still in the low single digits. It’s a total write-off.
Friday the 10th brings a shift. We get a 2 ft easterly swell, but the period is a short 4 seconds, creating weak, crumbly waves. The combined energy creeps up to 15 (still weak energy). The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s choppy.
Saturday the 11th is the most promising, but that’s not saying much. A 3 ft east swell with a short 5-second period pushes the combined energy to 61 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a moderate cross-onshore though, making it fairly choppy. It’s surfable for a beginner if they’re desperate, but nothing special.
From Sunday the 12th right through to July 22nd, it’s a dismal pattern. Most days show either no surf or tiny 0.3 ft to 1 ft swells with weak energy. The wind is often onshore or strong cross-onshore, creating lumpy or unknown conditions. One morning, the 19th, shows a 4 ft east swell (combined energy 81, moderate wave energy) but with a light onshore breeze, so it’s not going to be clean. Another morning, the 21st, has a 0.3 ft west swell with a long 11-second period and a moderate offshore wind – clean but tiny.
There’s simply no standout session here. Swanage is a very sheltered spot that rarely breaks, and this forecast confirms it. The water temperature is about average for the time of year. For the next two weeks, you’re better off finding another hobby. The setup really looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those rare occasions when the wind is up and the swell is onshore.
Rusty.
