The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for Swanage. Looking at the whole 16-day window, I’ve got to be honest, there’s not a single standout day that’s gonna get the heart pumping. We’ve got a long stretch of flat to tiny, messy conditions, and the few moments where there’s a bit of size come with strong winds that make it a challenge.
The first real pulse of activity shows up around Tuesday the 25th of August. We’ve got some swell pushing in from the East, about 5ft, but with a short period of just 6 seconds and onshore winds, it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined energy is moderate at 136, but it’s not going to be a fun paddle. The water temperature is running about 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you’re getting knocked around.
The window picks up a bit on Friday the 28th of August. The morning sees a 4ft SW swell (9 seconds) with a cross-offshore breeze, giving us some clean conditions and a combined energy of 284. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but still not a ripper. The real size comes on Saturday the 29th of August, with a 7ft WSW swell in the afternoon. The wind is strong offshore from the West, cleaning it up, but with a period of just 7 seconds and that size, it’s a powerful, bumpy, and thumping wall of water. The combined energy is a strong 450. This is only for expert paddlers who can handle the paddle out and the power. It’s more of a battle than a session.
After that, it drops off again. The 31st of August has a 4ft swell with strong offshore winds, but again, a short period of 6 seconds makes it hard work. From the 1st of September onward, we’re back to tiny, insignificant waves. A few clean days with offshore winds, but the swell is barely a ripple, often under 2ft.
So, the honest truth: there are no true standouts on offer here. If you’re desperate for a paddle in the second week, the 29th of August is the only day with any real push, but it’s a rough, expert-only affair. For the rest of us, it’s a blank run. In Swanage, it tends not to stay poor for long, but this window is a write-off for a good surf. I wouldn’t be charging down to the water just yet.
Rusty.
