Alright folks, Rusty here, and I've had a good look at the charts for our patch. Gotta be straight with you – it's a lean run ahead. We're looking at a solid stretch with barely a ripple to get excited about, so don't be in a rush to grab your board.
The whole 16-day window is a tough one. The first real recommendation doesn't pop up until Friday the 18th of July, and before that, it's just day after day of tiny, weak, and messy conditions. We're talking a solid two-week gap where the surf is pretty much non-existent. The combined swell energy barely gets into double figures, often sitting below 20, which is just whisper-thin for a place like this.
For the best chance of wetting a line, you're looking at Saturday morning, the 18th of July at Swanage. Now, I don't want to overhype this, but it's the standout in a very flat period. We've got a bit of a spike in the swell, pushing up to about 4 ft from the ENE, with a combined energy hitting 89 – the strongest we'll see all period. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the SSW at 16 mph, which should keep the faces reasonably tidy. Keep in mind this spot is a very sheltered, rarely breaks kind of set-up, and it's known to be a beginner-friendly wave... but at that size, it's getting a bit too punchy for a complete rookie. It'll be a more interesting prospect for someone with a few sessions under their belt. Expect a few others with the same idea; crowds are possible there at the best of times.
Before that, there's really nothing to write home about. You'll see a few afternoons with clean-looking conditions and a gentle offshore wind, but the swell is just pathetic – we're talking ankle-high to knee-high with period so short it's just wind-chop. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary to report on that front. Just a lot of flat, glassy days where you're better off with a longboard and a lot of patience, or just staying home.
So, in short: save your energy for that Saturday the 18th at Swanage. It’s the only wave with enough grunt to have a proper go. Before that, it's a waiting game, mate. Forecasts can always change, but right now it’s a long, dry spell.
Rusty.
