The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Honestly, I'm looking at the next 16 days here and it's a bit of a tough one. There's a real lack of any decent swell energy to get excited about. The whole window is filled with poor surf conditions, so we're in for a long flat spell. The first few days are a write-off, with nothing worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a gap of several days with no real recommendations.
Swanage is the only spot on the cards, and it's a rare-breaker as it is. The forecast shows a tiny bit of swell on the 15th of July, Wednesday morning, with a weak 4ft from the east and a short, weak period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a meagre 124 (moderate wave energy), but it's completely blown out by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. The water temp is about average for the time of year. It’s just not worth it.
The rest of the week and into the next is a washout. There are a few moments with clean conditions, like Friday afternoon (17th July) with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0ft. The same story repeats – clean wind but zero wave power. The highest energy we see after that first day is a 76 on the 19th of July, Sunday morning, with a 4ft easterly swell, but it’s choppy and poor.
The 25th of July, Saturday morning, offers a glassy surface with a tiny 0.3ft swell from the west and a very long 12-second period. That long period suggests it’s a groundswell, but there’s simply no height to work with. The 29th of July, Wednesday morning, is similar – glassy, but again only 0.3ft.
For a break that rarely breaks and is very sheltered, you need a solid pulse of swell from the southwest to get it going, and that just isn't showing up. This is a blank run, and for this area, it's more normal than not. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the few days with stronger wind.
