Alright, this is Rusty, and I've got the goods on what's coming up for Swanage.
Honestly, looking ahead over these next 16 days, it's a tough start. We are looking at a long stretch of flat, unrideable surf with no recommendations for a good chunk of time. From now until at least the 6th of July, there is basically nothing to get excited about. The water here is sitting at about 65°F, and with an anomaly of over 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year, it's like swimming in a bath, but unfortunately, that's the only highlight.
We have to wait all the way to the 10th of July Friday afternoon before we see any swell, and even then it's marginal and messy. The combined energy of all swells directed here is weak at only 17 (17), with a short period windswell. It's not worth paddling out for. The 11th of July Saturday morning offers a bit more size at 3ft from the east, but it's coming with a strong onshore wind, making it choppy and blown out for Swanage. This is a very sheltered spot that needs a clean west or southwest wind to work, and that's just not happening.
The pattern continues with mostly onshore winds and weak, inconsistent east swells through the middle of the month. For a beginner break like Swanage that rarely breaks, this kind of blank run isn't all that unusual, but it's frustrating nonetheless.
The first flicker of genuine hope arrives around the 16th of July Thursday afternoon. We see a 4ft easterly swell and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 114 (114). But it's still cross-onshore, so it'll be choppy and hard to manage. Not the dream session, but at least there's some push.
Things finally start to look up on the 21st of July Tuesday morning. That's the standout window. We've got a 1ft southwest swell, which aligns with the optimum direction for Swanage, and the wind will be offshore from the WSW, meaning the surf should be clean. The period is a workable 9 seconds, and while the combined energy is modest at 20 (20), it's not about power here; it's about having a clean, rideable wave with no crowds likely. This will be the best on offer across the whole forecast, a true window of opportunity for a longboard or a funboard. The afternoon stiffens up with a 30 km/h cross-offshore breeze, so the morning will be the call.
So, to keep it simple: it's flat for ages, then a few frustrating days, but that Tuesday the 21st of July morning is your one to pencil in.
Stay stoked, keep checking the charts.
