The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. We’ve got a 16-day window for Swanage, and the honest truth is it’s looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. The surf is nearly non-existent for the first week, and even when we get a few bumps later on, the conditions are going to be a real struggle.
The water temp is a wild story right now. It’s sitting at 66°, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and something you’ll definitely notice when you first get in.
We’re looking at a long, dry stretch from now until the 26th of July. There’s a tiny bit of weak energy on the 14th, with a 2ft easterly swell and a period of 5 seconds, but it’s blown out by a 9 mph onshore wind and the combined energy is a weak 31. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. The next few days are even worse – tiny bumps, bad wind, and almost no energy. The 19th sees a 4ft easterly swell, but it’s accompanied by a 16 mph cross-onshore wind making it choppy and messy. This is a write-off for a surfboard, but you could probably get a kite out there.
Things don’t really start to look interesting until the 27th of July. The Monday morning is still tiny, but by Monday afternoon we get a jump in swell. A 6ft swell from the WSW hits, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 202, which is the most power we’ve seen in the whole forecast. The catch? The wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-onshore, so it’s going to be a bit bumpy. This is probably the best chance for a wave, but it’s not going to be clean.
The 28th of July is a letdown again, with tiny surf and offshore wind giving clean but flat conditions. Then on the 29th of July, we get another pulse. Wednesday morning brings a 5ft swell from the SSW with a 6-second period and a combined energy of 306. The wind is a 12 mph cross-offshore from the SSW, which is clean. This is the best-looking swell of the whole run, but it’s still a short-period, wind-driven wave. It’s not going to have that long-period groundswell punch. For a break that rarely breaks, this is your best shot, but keep expectations low.
To be honest, for the whole 16 days, the only real standout is the morning of the 29th of July. The swell is the biggest, the energy is the highest, and the wind is clean. Even then, it’s just a 5ft short-period peel that’s going to be a bit mushy. For a spot that’s very sheltered, that’s the best we can hope for.
Rusty.
