The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get real about Swanage. I’ve looked at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I’ll be honest with you—it’s a tough stretch for a wave. This stretch of coast is super sheltered, and that’s the whole problem. We’re not looking at a blank run, but we're looking at a long, long dry spell where you'll be staring at flat, lumpy water more than anything with a pulse.

The first week and a bit is basically a write-off. From now through the end of August, the swell energy is just pathetic, mostly reading in the single digits and teens. Don’t even bother checking the cam. You’ll get a tiny ripple here and there, but with onshore winds and periods bouncing around 3-5 seconds, it’s just messy. Saturday the 29th does see a little blip of energy push in—the combined energy jumps to 206 (moderate) in the morning and then up to 308 (moderate) by the afternoon—with about 4ft to 5ft of short-period swell, but the wind is cross-shore and the period is only 6-7 seconds. That’s going to be a jumbled, close-out mess, not worth the paddle. It’s peak summer flotsam, not surf.

Now, here’s the thing. After that, we’ve got another flat spell that drags us right through the end of August and into the start of September. The first real, honest-to-goodness event on the charts doesn’t even show up until the 1st of September. That’s a solid week away, so take this with a grain of salt, but it has the potential to be the standout for the whole period.

Hold on to your hats for the first couple of days of September. That Monday and Tuesday is when the ocean finally wakes up. The combined energy is reading strong, hitting 950 (strong) on Tuesday morning and still 802 (strong) that afternoon. That’s a real push of energy. We’re looking at a solid 6ft of swell from the WSW with a 9-second period. That’s proper surf, not dribble.

For that Tuesday, September 1st, you’ll want to be at Swanage (Dorset). It’s a beach break, and it’s usually a shadow of its former self with this kind of wind, but it’s the spot that’s on the cards. The catch is, this kind of 6ft swell is pushing into the "too big for beginners" territory. It’s getting powerful, and the period is short, so it’s going to be dumping and pitching. More of a challenge for the experienced crew.

The wind is forecast to be cross-offshore, which will help keep the face reasonably clean, which is a bonus. But, be aware, this is a beach break, and a short period swell can be tricky. The good news is, there’s still some pockets of energy further out, but at 6ft, it’s going to be a proper session, not a learner wave.

If I had to call it, that’s the one day you circle on the calendar. Everything before that is a waiting game. Don’t bother with the rest.

Alright, let’s talk about the reality of the situation. The water temp is around average for this time of year, so no need for a thick suit just yet.

So, the long and short of it: you’re waiting until the first of September. That’s your play. It’s a day for the experienced surfers to get some proper push. For the groms and the weekend warriors, there’s nothing for you in the near future.

Rusty out.
