Right then, let's be honest, it's been a tough stretch for us here at Swanage. The truth is, for the next couple of weeks, there is basically nothing on offer that's worth paddling out for. Not a single standout, not even a half-decent session. We're looking at a solid 16-day gap where the best advice is to stay on the beach.
The water's cooked right now, coming in at 64°F with an anomaly of 5°F, so it's much warmer than normal for this time of year. That's about the only thing that's out of the ordinary.
For the first ten days, the swell is tiny, mostly flat or under 1ft, coming from the west with a short, weak period. The energy is pathetic – we're talking single digits and low double digits like 2, 16, or 3. The wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, which would normally be a good thing, but with no swell to work with, it's just a cruel tease. Morning of the 11th looks glassy with a 0.7ft westerly, but again, you'd be floating.
Around the 20th of July, Monday morning finally shows a pulse of energy – a 4ft WSW swell with a period of 6 seconds and 130 combined energy. But even then, it's marked as poor surf conditions, with a fresh cross-offshore breeze. It's still too small and short-period to get excited about, and the break is very sheltered and rarely breaks anyway. For a spot this inconsistent, a blank run like this is more normal than you'd hope.
Honestly, with the swell this weak, the wind strong, and the break being a very sheltered setup, this looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone with a paddle. Not our week.
