The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for our local stretch.
Honestly, I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a tough one to call. The whole 16-day window is looking like a quiet spell for the Swanage area. Right now, the water is sitting at 67°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s pretty wild, you could almost think you’re in the tropics, but the swell just isn’t playing ball.
We’ve got a long gap here with nothing really rideable. The first few days up to the weekend are offering tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. The combined energy barely gets into double digits (9), and with the wind on it, it’s just messy. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday afternoon, 22nd July, where the wind swings offshore and the water goes glassy, but the swell is only 0.3 ft – not enough to float a leaf. It’s frustrating because the conditions are clean, but there’s just no power.
The situation doesn’t really improve. We go through a big dry spell from the 25th to the 27th of July where there’s literally zero swell forecast. Then, on the 28th of July, Tuesday morning, a tiny pulse of 0.7 ft from the west with a period of 9 seconds shows up. The energy is still dead low (6), and while the wind is offshore, you’d be fighting for a ripple. It’s not a recommendation, just a sign of life.
The pattern continues right through the end of the month and into August. The 31st of July sees a bit of cross-on wind and a bump in energy to 31, but the swell is short-period and sloppy. It’s not surfable for a paddle board.
So, what’s the takeaway? There are no standout days, no real windows of quality surf. The few moments of clean wind come with zero swell, and the few moments of bigger energy come with bad wind. It’s a blank run. Best advice is to keep the board in the car and the wax in the bag – the forecasts can flip, but right now, this area is in a flat spell.
Rusty.
