The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is one of those outlooks where I’m squinting at the charts and scratching my head. For Swanage, we are looking at a real flat spell with nothing worth paddling out for across the whole 16-day window. There just isn't any decent surf on the cards.
Right from Tuesday, July 14th, we’ve got tiny, weak waves. The combined swell energy is sitting at a measly 3 (weak) in the morning with a 0.3 ft, 12-second period swell from the west, but a brisk 16 mph cross-onshore wind from the NE is going to chop it all up. It's a write-off. That pattern sticks around for days on end. Through the rest of the week into the weekend, we’re looking at knee-high slop at best, with most days seeing onshore or cross-onshore breezes keeping things messy. We're talking combined energy values staying below 100 the whole time – just weak, uninteresting energy.
There's a glimmer of something on Wednesday, July 22nd, with a slightly bigger 4 ft swell from the east, but even that's only got 82 (weak) combined energy and a short, weak 5-second period. The wind is cross-shore and choppy, so it's still not a surfer's wave. The following day, the 23rd, has a moment of glassy conditions in the morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3 ft. You’d be floating.
Moving into the last week of July, we finally see a spike in size. On Wednesday the 29th, the swell jumps to 7 ft from the southwest, with combined energy hitting 352 (moderate). That sounds promising, but the period is a weak 6 seconds, and a 19 mph cross-offshore wind from the SW is going to be howling. With that much wind and a short-period swell, it’s going to be a blown-out mess. For a sheltered spot like Swanage, which is very sheltered and rarely breaks anyway, this setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s simply not a surfable scenario.
Basically, we’ve got a long, dry run here. Swanage is a fickle spot, and this forecast is a classic example of it staying flat and poor. Don't get your hopes up – the forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to chase.
Rusty.
