Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here with the outlook for Spanish Bay-South Moss. Let’s be straight, it’s a tough stretch ahead. This is an advanced spot, fairly consistent normally, but over the next two and a half weeks, there’s no standout session that’s firing on all cylinders. The water’s sitting at 59°F right now, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing crazy, but you’ll notice it’s a touch mild.
Looking at the first week, Thursday July 2nd morning has the most size, with a 6 ft swell from the WNW and moderate energy (685). But the wind is a cross-shore at 9 mph, adding a bit of chop. It’s a marginal call – surfable for the experienced but not the cleanest. The afternoon drops off quick. Friday July 3rd and Saturday July 4th are small and onshore-affected, with short-period, weak swells around 3 ft to 4 ft. Not worth paddling out.
Sunday July 5th through Wednesday July 8th sees the swell size drop even more, but there’s a twist – the period jumps to 16-19 seconds on a SSW direction. That’s proper long-period groundswell, but it’s tiny, 2 ft to 3 ft, and the energy is moderate (490-1463 range). The problem is the wind is directly onshore, not offshore, so it’s messy. These long-period swells can offer clean lines at a reef or point, but with the wind and the lack of size, it’s not doing you any favours here.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Thursday July 9th morning. You get a 7 ft swell from the WNW, and while the period is short at 9 seconds, the energy is strong (1045). The wind is light and onshore, but that size will attract the crew looking for a push. It’s borderline – could be fun for experts if you find a pocket, but the short period and onshore won’t make it classic. For beginners, 7 ft is too big.
Through the second week, we get a similar pattern. Friday July 10th morning has 6 ft from the NW with light cross-onshore wind, and Saturday July 11th morning has 5 ft from the NW with light breeze. The energy drops, and the wind never gets truly glassy. By the time we hit Thursday July 16th, we’re back to small long-period (18 seconds) WNW groundswell at 3 ft, which will break straight at a beach break, but here it might wrap a little. Still, it’s marginal.
Truth is, nothing here is a clear winner. If I had to point the bus, go for Thursday July 9th morning or Friday July 10th morning – those have the most size and the wind is at least light. But it’s not the day you tell your mates about. Keep your eye on the charts, things can change.
Rusty.
