Alright, this is Rusty.
Look, I’ll level with you. The next two weeks here are a real mixed bag, and it’s gonna take some patience to find a window. Right now we’re looking at a lot of average, choppy days with wind ruining what little swell we’ve got. There are a few promising moments, but they’re further out, so don’t get too excited too early. Let’s walk through it.
Things kick off on Saturday the 4th of July, but honestly, it’s not worth paddling out. We’ve got a tiny 2ft SSW swell coming in at a long 14 seconds, but the wind is cross-on from the WNW at 6 mph. The wave energy is weak (360), and it’s just not doing anything special. That sets the tone for the first week.
Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday (5th) are pretty much the same story. The swell bumps up to 2ft with a very long period (18 seconds), and the combined energy climbs to 505 on Sunday afternoon. But the wind is on it, mostly cross-on from the west or northwest. It’s choppy and messy.
Monday (6th) and Tuesday (7th) see the swell trying to build, with Tuesday morning showing 3ft from the SSW at a 19-second period, pushing the combined energy to 1059 (moderate energy). That’s still not doing us any favours because the wind is onshore and strong (12 mph from the NW). The conditions are poor. By Tuesday afternoon, the swell jumps to 5ft from the NW with a short period of 11 seconds, and the energy hits 1203, but again, the wind is howling onshore at 15 mph. It’s a complete washout.
Wednesday (8th) and Thursday (9th) don’t get much better. Thursday morning brings a 7ft NW swell, but the period is a short 9 seconds and the wind is on at 12 mph. The energy is strong at 1193, but it’s a bumpy, blown-out mess. This is where I’d say the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We finally get a little relief on Friday the 10th. The swell drops to 6ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind eases to a cross-on 9 mph from the west. The morning shows moderate energy (875). It’s still a bit lumpy, but it’s the first time things aren’t completely unsurfable. The quality is still marginal though.
Saturday the 11th brings a small 5ft NW swell (8-second period) and lighter cross-on winds, giving us a slightly better chance in the morning. The wave energy is moderate (544). But it’s not a standout.
Now, here’s where we get to the one true highlight. You gotta wait for it. Tuesday the 14th of July morning is the one. The swell is 7ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 891. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW at 6 mph, and the water is reported as clean. This is our best bet.
But hold on, Wednesday the 15th of July morning might just top it. We’ve got a 6ft NW swell with a slightly longer 10-second period, and the energy is very high at 952. The wind is glassy – 3 mph from the WSW. That’s the magic word. Glassy conditions on a 6ft swell at Spanish Bay-South Moss. That’s the one I’d be circling on the calendar. It’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in yet.
After that, the rest of the second week drops off. Thursday the 16th to Saturday the 18th has small 3ft WNW swell with long periods (16-19 seconds). The wind stays cross-on or onshore, and the conditions are marginal again. Sunday the 19th is a non-starter with 2ft and onshore winds.
Keep an eye on that Tuesday and Wednesday window. It’s a long wait, but it could be worth it.
Rusty.
