The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch is a tough one to call. We're looking at Spanish Bay-South Moss, and the honest truth is the surf is pretty much flat-lined for a solid, painful stretch. There’s nothing worth paddling out for from the start all the way through to the early morning of August 29th. That’s nearly two weeks of waiting. Even then, the only glimmers are on the last few days of this run.
The water temp is sitting at 61°, and for this time of year, that’s about average, so no excuses there about needing a thicker suit for the first session.
Let’s get into the nitty-gritty. From Monday the 17th of August right through to the afternoon of Friday the 28th, it’s all "poor surf conditions" every single session. The swell is there, but it’s weak and messy. You’re looking at tiny, inconsistent lines from the SSW and then some short-period NW windswell. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the WNW, just chopping everything up. The combined wave energy is moderate at best – bouncing between 327 and 575 – but without any quality, it’s just a waste of time.
We finally get a tiny window of life starting Saturday morning, August 29th. The morning shows a bit of promise with a 4ft SSW groundswell at a very long 18 seconds. The energy jumps up strong to 886, and we have a light breeze. That long period suggests some real power, but don't get too excited. For a beach break, a period that long can make the waves stand up and close out. You’d want to be on a point or reef. The call is still "marginal" at best.
Then Sunday, August 30th, is more of the same. Same 4ft SSW swell at 16 seconds, energy still strong around 809-851, but that cross-onshore wind kicks in for the afternoon, making it choppy. The wait goes on.
Finally, the only session that might even be a glimmer of hope – and I say that with caution – is Monday morning, August 31st. We get a 3ft SSW swell, energy is down to 627, but the wind switches to a light cross-shore from the SW. That’s the cleanest wind we’ve seen the whole forecast. The comment even says "marginal," but with a score of 2, it’s the best on offer. The issue is that the swell is small, and the direction is SSW, which isn't the optimum W for this spot. It'll be weak and pretty inconsistent, as this break can be. If you’re desperate, paddle out that morning for some slow, clean lines. The afternoon sees a jump in size to 6ft, but that’s from a short-period WNW windswell (8 seconds) and it’s choppy again.
Tuesday, September 1st, is the last day. Morning looks similar with a 6ft WNW windswell and a light cross-shore – probably the second-best shot of the whole run, but it’s still windswell. By the afternoon, the onshore wind kills it.
So, here's the bottom line: don't bother for the first two weeks. The only window to even think about is the morning of Monday, August 31st for small clean waves. It's a lean, mean stretch. The only word for it is frustrating.
Rusty.
