The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been looking at what’s coming up for Spanish Bay-South Moss. Honestly, the 16-day window is a bit of a struggle here. The forecast shows a real patchy run, with nothing that’s going to have you calling in sick. The best we can find is a couple of days where the waves are just about rideable, but you’ll be working for it.
Let’s kick off with the only real standout. Tuesday, July 21st looks like the pick of the bunch. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell rolling in from the SSW, with a period of 13 seconds. That’s a solid groundswell, and the combined energy is pumping at 945 (moderate wave energy). The morning is the go, with light cross-onshore winds from the WNW at 3 mph, which is just a slight air, keeping things pretty clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no shock to the system. This is a fairly consistent advanced break, but it can get crowded here sometimes, so paddle out early if you can. The afternoon will see the wind pick up and swing cross-shore, which will introduce some chop, so the morning session is your best bet.
The rest of the first week is pretty grim. July 17th and 18th have a 3 ft to 3 ft swell, but it’s coming from the WNW with a very long 17-second period, and the wind is howling onshore. The combined energy is solid (between 700 and 800), but with those onshore winds, the surf is poor. The same goes for July 19th and 20th, with marginal conditions at best. July 22nd sees the swell drop back to 3 ft, and the wind is cross-shore, but the energy is weak (400 range), making it a tough go.
Now, into the second week, things get a bit more interesting in terms of size, but the wind is still a problem. July 25th, 26th, and 27th all have waist to chest high swell (3 ft to 4 ft) from the SSW with a very long period (17-19 seconds), and the combined energy is strong, hitting the 1500 range (strong wave energy). But the wind is onshore from the NW at 9-12 mph, which ruins the surface. The afternoon sessions on the 26th and 27th are cross-onshore and choppy. July 28th offers a little hope with an onshore wind from the NW at 6 mph (light breeze) in the afternoon on a 4 ft SSW swell, giving it a score of 2 out of 10. It’s still marginal, but the light wind might make it the most manageable day of that week.
The final days of the month, July 30th and 31st, see a shift to a shorter period WNW swell (8-9 seconds). The size is 4 ft to 5 ft, but the combined energy is weak to moderate (400-600), and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surf conditions poor. August 1st is a similar story: 5 ft from the NW, but with onshore winds and weak energy.
So, to sum it up: the only real shot at a decent wave is the morning of Tuesday, July 21st, with that 5 ft SSW groundswell and light wind. For the rest of the 16 days, you’re looking at a lot of onshore wind, long-period swells that won’t set up well with the wind, and marginal surf. It’s a frustrating run, but you know how it goes – it tends not to stay poor for too long.
Rusty.
