The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Spanish Bay-South Moss is a tough watch. The forecast is a long, drawn-out stretch of mostly marginal to poor conditions, with a lot of wind-ruined surf and periods of very small swell. You’re looking at a solid week of nothing really worth paddling out for before we get to the back half of the run.

Right now, starting Tuesday the 14th, we’ve got a tiny 3ft NW windswell sneaking in with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is weak (276), and it’s already cross-on with a light westerly breeze. Not great. The water is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.

Wednesday the 15th through the following Monday the 20th is a write-off. The swell bumps up a bit on Thursday the 16th, hitting 6ft to 6ft from the NW, but it’s all onshore wind – 12 to 16 mph from the NW and WNW. The wave energy cranks up into the moderate range (742 to 848), but it’s blown out and messy. That’s a no-go. By Friday the 17th afternoon, the period jumps to a very long 17 seconds, which is usually a good sign, but the swell drops to 3ft and the wind is still onshore. It’s a frustrating tease.

We’ve got a real dead zone from the 15th all the way through to the 24th. The waves are small, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, and the forecast scores are consistently low. There’s a few mornings with light winds and tiny 2ft to 3ft SSW swell, but it’s all rated as marginal at best. It’s a long week and a half of looking at a flat, choppy ocean.

Now, the only true standout in this whole outlook is a promising but less certain call for Saturday the 25th of July. The afternoon shows a pulse of 6ft swell from the S with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy jumps to a very strong 1796, so there’s proper power behind it. The wind is light from the west, keeping it cross-on, but that light breeze will keep the surface pretty clean. This is the best the forecast has to offer, but it’s two weeks out, so keep your expectations in check. It’s a solid window for the more experienced crew, as that long-period S swell can produce some well-shaped walls on the right tide.

The run up to that point has some small, light-wind windows on the 24th and 26th, but the swell is tiny (2ft to 3ft) and the energy is moderate to weak. It’s not really worth rushing for. The 27th through the 29th sees a consistent 3ft to 4ft SSW swell, but the wind is always cross-on or onshore, ruining the quality.

So, bottom line: the first week is a total bust. You’ve got one standout on the 25th, but it’s far out. For the rest, you’re better off waiting for the forecasts to change. Patience is key here.

Rusty.
