The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ at Spanish Bay-Cobblestones over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The onshore wind is a persistent problem, and the surf quality is just not there for the most part. We’re in for a long, dry spell.

The southern hemi groundswell is pumping in some serious energy, with a very long period of 17 seconds on Tuesday the 28th, but it’s all getting trashed. The combined energy is a solid 798 (moderate) in the morning, but the wind is onshore from the NW, making it a real mess. Water temp is sitting at 15° – pretty much normal for this time of year. The afternoon gets worse with a stronger 15 mph onshore breeze. This is a classic case of a setup that looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

We then hit a big gap. From Tuesday afternoon right through until Saturday, August 2nd, it’s a wasteland of poor surf with onshore winds. The swell is small and the wind is killing it. Even Thursday morning the 30th has a short period 6 ft swell from the WNW, but it’s just a messy, choppy burger.

The closest we get to a chance is Sunday morning, August 3rd. The swell has built to 7 ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and the wind finally swings to a light cross-onshore from the WNW. The combined energy is a strong 951, which is a lot of power. Still, it’s only a marginal call, with cross-onshore wind ripples spoiling the surface. For a powerful spot like this, that’s a real shame. Crowds are likely here, and the break is fairly consistent, but it’s just not clean enough to get excited about.

The second week looks even more bleak. The swell drops off, and the wind stays stubbornly onshore or cross-onshore. There’s no standout or even a decent option in the long range. This is a tough run for the Cobblestones, and it’s normal for a spell this poor to lock in for a while.

So, my honest call? There’s nothing on the cards worth paddling out for. The whole 16-day window is a washout. Sometimes you just have to wait for the next change.

Rusty.
