The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Smugglers Cove. Gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a bit of a slow burn. We’ve got some waves on the cards, but nothing that’s gonna have you ringing in sick for work. The water’s sitting at 55°F, which is about 5°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s a serious chill, so a thick wetsuit and booties are non-negotiable if you’re paddling out.
We kick things off on Tuesday, the 18th of August morning. There’s a small 2ft swell coming from the SW with a period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 204. The wind is light and offshore from the W, so it should be glassy clean. But honestly, it’s tiny. It’s a beginner-friendly wave but don’t expect much push. The afternoon turns a bit lumpy as the wind goes cross-onshore.
Moving into Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th, the swell builds a touch. We’re looking at 3ft to 4ft from the WNW. The period drops to 11-12 seconds, but the energy picks up, reaching 480 on Thursday morning (strong!). Still, the wind is cross-onshore and light, which keeps things a bit crinkly. It’s rideable, but you’ll be fighting a bit of bump.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd see the swell drop back to the 4ft to 4ft range, but the period falls off a cliff to just 8 seconds. That’s weak, short-period wind swell. The energy is moderate at best, and combined with the persistent light cross-onshore wind, it’s just messy. Not worth paddling out for.
Sunday the 23rd is a write-off with tiny 3ft to 3ft swell and a period of only 6 seconds. The wind goes cross-off on the afternoon, which cleans it up, but there’s no power behind it. You’d be scratching for scraps.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s mostly poor. Swell heights bounce between 1ft and 4ft, periods are all over the place. There are a few moments with longer-period groundswell (15-18 seconds) coming from the SW on the 24th and 25th, and again on the 30th and 31st. The combined energy is moderate to strong (up to 375 on the 25th afternoon). But the wind is either cross or cross-off, which is okay, but the wave heights are just too small to make anything of it. A 2ft wave with 17-second period is all show and no go – it won’t break properly on a beach setup.
The best bet in this whole forecast window is actually the morning of Wednesday, the 26th of August. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period. The combined energy is strong at 401. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the NNW. It’s not perfect, but it’s the most size and energy we see in two weeks, and the chop won’t be too bad. It’s still a marginal call, but if you’re desperate, that’s your window.
After that, it fades again into the first couple of days of September with nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: we’ve got one standout window on the morning of the 26th of August. It’s not epic, but it’s the best on offer. The rest of the time, you’re looking at small, weak, or onshore junk. Keep your expectations low and maybe bring a kite if you’ve got one, because for a beach break with this much wind and small swell, it might be more fun for the kite crew.
Rusty.
