Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch for Smugglers Cove for the next two weeks, I’m not gonna sugar-coat it. This is a beginner-friendly, fairly consistent spot that’s exposed to the swell and works best with a W direction. But honestly, if you paddle out looking for a wave you’re gonna be fighting the wind most of the time.
The water’s sitting at 57° which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so a thicker wetsuit is a good call.
We start off on Thursday the 2nd of July with a tiny 2ft SW swell and a 16-second period. That long-period energy is nice in theory, but at 205 it’s weak energy and the light SW breeze is onshore and the comment calls it marginal. It’s not a total washout, but it’s not worth cancelling plans for.
From Friday the 3rd right through to Wednesday the 8th, it’s basically a write-off. We’ve got swell hanging around the 3ft to 5ft range from WNW, but the wind is a frustrating cross or cross-onshore from NW and NNW all day, every day. The wave comments are all “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” The combined energy climbs from 300 up to 630, but that doesn’t matter when it’s chopped up and lumpy. The 8 to 10-second period on those days is short-period windswell anyway, so don’t get excited about the size.
Thursday the 9th of July is more of the same – 4ft to 5ft WNW, cross-shore wind from NW. The wave comment calls it marginal at best in the afternoon, but again, it’s cross-shore chop.
There’s a little glimmer on the morning of Tuesday the 7th – a 3ft WNW swell with a WSW wind at 6 mph that’s onshore but so light it’s glassy. The comment says “marginal surf” though, so it’s a maybe. The water temp anomaly isn't far from average for the time of year, so no shock there.
After that, from Friday the 10th of July all the way to Sunday the 12th, the swell drops way back to 2ft to 3ft from SW and WNW. The winds are still cross-shore. It’s just flat and messy.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are the same story. Tiny waves, poor conditions.
Now, there’s one period that’s worth watching. Wednesday the 15th of July onwards, the swell stays small at 2ft to 3ft, but the period stretches out to 17-19 seconds from W and WNW. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits 378, then 534, and later 782. The real news here is the wind. On Wednesday afternoon (15 July) and again on Thursday and Friday afternoons (16 & 17 July), the wind swings N and goes cross-offshore, and the wave comments say “clean.” That’s a big deal. A 2ft to 3ft clean, long-period groundswell at a beginner break... that could be a fun little session if you’re just getting started. It won’t be big, but it’ll be the cleanest it gets in this entire 16-day run. For experts, forget it – 3ft is too small.
The rest of the time? Don’t bother. This is a long, dry stretch with a lot of cross-shore chop. If the wind straightens out on those late-week afternoons, that’s your best bet. But honestly, there’s no standout day. The best on offer is that clean, glassy-ish window on the 15th and 16th of July afternoons.
Stay patient. Rusty out.
