The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over at Sleepy Hollows for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with ya – the first week to ten days is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long, frustrating gap of poor conditions stretchin’ from Friday the 21st of August all the way through to the end of the month. The swell is there, but the wind is just relentless. Strong, cross-off breezes from the ENE are just trashing any chance of quality. You’ll see the odd 2 ft to 3 ft of SW groundswell, with that long 16-second period, but with 22 to 28 mph winds, it’s just not worth paddlin’ out. The combined energy is moderate, but it’s fightin’ a losing battle. Honestly, the setup looks more interestin’ for kite surfing than paddle surfin’ for most of this.
The water temp is a warm 80°F, which is pretty bang on average for this time of year, so no worries there.
Now, things finally start to look up come Wednesday the 2nd of September. This is our standout window, and it’s the only real shout in the whole forecast. Wednesday morning sees the wind drop right back to a light 6 mph from the NNE, still cross-off, swinging to a dead-flat glassy calm by the afternoon. That’s the gold right there. You’re lookin’ at clean 3 ft of SSW groundswell with a solid 16-second period. This is a long-period groundswell, which brings energy and shape, but at a beach-and-reef set-up like Sleepy Hollows, it can sometimes break a bit too straight. Still, with the water smooth as glass, the combined energy is sittin’ at a solid moderate level (337-370), so there’ll be some fun ones.
Just keep in mind, Sleepy Hollows is an inconsistent spot, so it doesn’t fire often. When it does, and with that quality on offer, expect it to be a *sometimes* crowded affair. It’s mostly an intermediate wave at that size, but it’s your best shot.
After that little burst of magic, we slide back into mediocrity. Thursday the 3rd swings onshore, and the rest of the second week is back to cross-off winds and weaker, short-period slop that’s not worth gettin’ wet for. A couple of days around the 4th and 5th of September are just 'ordinary'.
So there ya have it. A long, long wait for a single, beautiful day on the 2nd of September. Mark it on your calendar, but don’t hold your breath for anything else.
Rusty.
