The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming up at Serrambi.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a slow stretch for surf. We’re looking at a run of generally poor conditions, with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind and weak, short-period swell. For the first couple of weeks, there’s really nothing that’s going to get you excited. The water temp is sitting at 81°, about a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’ll be a nice dip, but the waves just aren’t cooperating.
From Thursday morning the 10th all the way through to Wednesday the 23rd of September, we’ve got near-continuous poor surf calls. Winds are mostly from the east and southeast, blowing onshore or cross-onshore at 9 to 12 mph, with swell heights barely reaching 5 ft. Periods are short, mostly 7 to 8 seconds, which means weak, crumbly little waves. The combined swell energy sits between 119 and 394 (moderate at best) but it’s all messy. Kite surfers might get something out of the choppy afternoons, but for a paddle surfer, this is a long wait.
Now, there is one small glimmer. On Thursday the 24th of September, we finally see a shift. The morning shows a 5 ft swell from the east with a long 11-second period and a combined energy of 623 (moderate but noticeably stronger). The wind is cross-on from the northeast at 9 mph, which isn’t ideal, but it’s not as messy. Still, it’s only rated as marginal. The rest of that day and the 25th drop off again.
Given the lack of any standout windows, I’d say hang tight. Serrambi is an inconsistent reef break, so these blank runs happen. If anything, the 24th morning looks like the best shot, but keep your expectations low. The wind and tide will need to line up perfectly.
That’s the story from here.
