The Lowdown

Right, pull up a seat. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Seacrest Drive. Gotta be straight with you – this ain’t a week to get excited about. We’re looking at a long, dry spell before we see anything worth paddling out for.

The pattern right now is flat and poor. From now, Thursday the 3rd, right through to the middle of the month, it’s a total write-off. There are over ten days of just nothing. Tiny swell, short period slop, and only the faintest glimmers of clean conditions. The water temp is about average for this time of year, which is fine, but there’s no power behind it.

Thursday morning kicks off with a tiny 3ft ESE swell at 9 seconds, but the combined energy is weak (110). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The wind is a cross-off from the WSW, so it’s clean. But honestly, you’d be struggling to get a decent ride. That afternoon drops to 2ft and just fades from there.

From Friday the 4th through until at least Tuesday the 15th, it’s just one ‘poor surf conditions’ report after another. We’ve got days of glassy conditions on the 5th, but the swell is a pathetic 1.0ft to 1ft with period of 6 or 7 seconds. That’s not surf, that’s a ripple. The best you can say is the wind is occasionally offshore, but there’s nothing to blow on.

The one bright spot? Keep an eye on Tuesday the 15th afternoon. It’s glassy, real calm, with a 2ft E swell at 8 seconds. The energy is still weak (56), but it’s surfable and clean. Then again on Wednesday the 18th we see a jump to 4ft from the ENE at 5 seconds, but that’s short period junk, and with light rain in the mix. It’s still surfable but very ordinary. Neither of these are standouts, just the least terrible options.

So, the highlight? There isn’t one. This is a classic flat spell for the area. The only thing worth noting is if you’re desperate, Tuesday the 15th afternoon offers glass. But don’t expect much. The setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on any day with that 4ft ENE windswell and lumpy chop on the 6th.

Stay patient. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
