The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get local and have a look at what's on the table for this stretch.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you, this is a tough run. We're looking at a 16-day forecast for Rocky Point, and it's a real dry spell. The whole lot is showing poor surf conditions nearly every day, and the few small bumps that show up are just not enough to get excited about. There's a big gap with absolutely no swell from around July 21st through to the 23rd, and then tiny, weak pulses after that. The water is sitting at about 78.8°, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The only time the ocean even blinks is on Tuesday, July 14th. We get a 4.3ft swell from the NE, but it's a short-period, weak groundswell at 7 seconds, and the combined wave energy is only moderate at 473. The problem is that the wind is a cross-shore from the ENE at 12 mph, putting a chop on the surface. It's a reef break that's very consistent, but with those conditions, it's just messy. It's not worth paddling out for.
The next morning, Wednesday, July 15th, the swell drops to 2.3ft from the west. The period is a long 15 seconds, which is proper groundswell, and the wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the east at 9 mph, making it clean. The energy is moderate at 380. For a reef break like Rocky Point, that long period is a good sign for shape, but the size is just too small. It's marginal. This same pattern of tiny, clean, west swell with a long period holds through Thursday morning, but with swell down to 2.0ft, you're just not going to get a ride.
After that, the surf just fades into nothing. The wind stays onshore or cross-shore, and we get a long run of zero swell from the 21st to the 23rd. For an exposed spot that's usually very consistent, a blank run like this is a bit of a shocker, but it happens. The forecasts can change, but right now, I'd say don't bother checking the buoys. There's just nothing here for a paddle surfer.
