Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on.
Right now, things are flat as a millpond. The first week and a half is a write-off for anything decent. There’s just no energy in the water to get excited about. From Saturday the 11th of July right through until the morning of Wednesday the 15th, it’s all tiny, weak, and messy. The wind is howling from the ENE at 19 mph, creating a lumpy cross-chop that makes it feel like a washing machine out there. Wave heights are barely 1 ft to 2 ft, and the combined swell energy is pathetic (30 to 354). The water temp is a steady 79°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Finally, on Wednesday the 15th of July, the wind drops a little and swings more cross-offshore out of the ESE at 9 mph. The ocean cleans up nicely, but the swell is still tiny – 2 ft from the west with a long period of 15 seconds. The combined energy bumps up to 406, which is moderate, but the waves are just too small to get a proper ride. It’s marginal at best, and only worth a paddle if you’re desperate.
Thursday the 16th is similar: clean conditions with offshore winds, but the swell stays at 2 ft and the energy drops back to 221. Still not enough to get the heart pumping. By Friday the 17th, the wind picks up again and the swell fades, so we’re back to poor conditions.
From Saturday the 18th of July all the way through to Thursday the 23rd, the surf is pretty much non-existent. There are days with no swell at all – zero combined energy. That’s a solid 6-day gap of nothing. It’s not unusual for this area to go quiet like this, but it’s frustrating.
Now, the one glimmer of hope comes on Saturday the 25th of July. The combined energy jumps to 227, and the swell height hits 5 ft to 5 ft from the NE, but here’s the catch – the period is a short and choppy 7 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit of a mess. Plus the wind is cross-shore from the ENE at 12 to 16 mph, which will keep it lumpy. It’s not clean, and at that size with short period, it’s more suited to paddle-in experts who don’t mind a bit of chaos. This is the best on offer, but it’s far from perfect.
Rocky Point is a reef break that’s very consistent and works best with a NW swell direction. The swell we’re seeing is mostly from the west and southwest, which isn’t its optimum, and the ENE cross-wind never really lets up. The crowds are often there, so expect company if you do go.
Overall, this 16-day window is a tough one. The only standout is Saturday the 25th of July, and even that’s a compromise. If you’re a kite surfer, the wind and chop on the 11th to 14th might interest you more than the paddle surfing.
Rusty.
