The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I'm gonna be straight with you – this is one of those outlooks where you might want to take up a new hobby for a while. The Rocky Point reef is just not doing us any favours in the 16-day window. There's a big gap of nothing happening from the start, right through to the end of August, with only a few scraps of energy that are barely surfable. We're talking days of poor surf with weak, small swell and messy cross-shore winds. The combined swell energy is just pathetic, mostly in the low teens to nineties, which is weak.
The water's sitting at 80°F with a tiny anomaly of 0.4°F, so it's pretty average for the time of year.
Now, the first glimmer of anything decent doesn't show up until Thursday, the 3rd of September. That's about a week and a half of flat or junk. But if you're keen on a gamble, that Thursday afternoon is the standout. We've got a glassy, offshore wind from the ESE at 3 mph, with a 2ft swell from the west at 15 seconds – that's a long period groundswell that'll wrap nicely into the reef. The combined energy jumps to 220 (moderate), and the water temps are still normal. With the wind going glassy, Rocky Point could actually be clean and workable. It's a very consistent break, so you've got a chance. The swell direction is pretty much optimum for the spot, which is a real bonus. Crowds are often here, so expect some company.
But don't get too excited. The swell is tiny, only 2ft, so it's more of a longboard or foamie session. The long period will mean long lulls and then a few nice, steep waves.
Friday the 4th of September morning is also a solid option, with clean cross-off ESE winds, 2ft west swell still holding, and combined energy at 204 (moderate). It's a slight step down from Thursday's glass, but still very surfable.
The rest of the outlook, especially the second week, is a write-off. There's a brief spike on the 2nd of September afternoon with a 7ft NE swell, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy, and the combined energy is 901 (strong), but it's labelled as poor surf. That's one for the experts only, and even then, it's not great.
So, to sum it up: if you're desperate, circle Thursday 3rd September afternoon and Friday 4th September morning. Otherwise, the boards can stay in the shed.
Rusty.
