The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat and let’s talk about what’s going on at Rocky Point.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are pretty grim on the whole. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with mostly cross-off or cross-shore winds, and the swell energy is just plain pathetic for the most part. The water temperature is sitting about average for this time of year – nothing unusual there, but it won’t help the waves.
The first real, faint glimmer of something halfway decent doesn’t show up until Friday morning, August 28. Up until then, from Monday August 17 right through to Thursday August 27, it’s a dead run. Swell heights barely get above 1 ft, periods are mostly short to middling, and the combined energy is nearly always in the weak range (often under 100). Wednesday August 19 morning sees a pulse of 2 ft from the NE with a 7-second period, but the energy is a weak 113 – still poor. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, so it’s clean, but there’s just no power to work with.
The only standout, and I mean the only one worth circling on your calendar, is Friday morning, August 28. Rocky Point should see a 6 ft NNE swell with a 7-second period, delivering 384 of combined energy – that’s moderate energy, and the biggest swell in the whole forecast. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the east at 9 mph, so it’ll be clean. That’s a solid, punchy set-up for intermediate surfers. The swell direction from the NNE is a bit off the optimum NW, but it’s still a decent angle for this reef. Keep in mind, with a 7-second period, these waves will be a bit crumbly and short-winded, but it’s the best you’re going to get. Expect crowds at this spot, though – it’s often busy.
After that, it’s back to tiny waves and messy cross-shore conditions through the rest of the 16 days. Not much else to get excited about.
Stay patient out there.
