The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell and onshore energy that’s going to keep things mostly flat and messy. Don’t get too excited; this is a waiting game.
We’re looking at Rocky Point (Big Island) and honestly, it’s a tough watch right now. The water temp is sitting at about 81°, which is average for this time of year. The swell energy is weak to moderate at best, with values mostly in the low double digits, like 111 (moderate) early on, but that’s about as good as it gets.
The first week is a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd through to the 30th, we’ve got wave heights struggling between 0.3 ft and 2 ft. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off from the ENE at 15-19 mph, which is bumping things up and making the surface lumpy. There’s no power behind any of it, and the periods are short, around 9-11 seconds. It’s just not worth paddling out.
There’s a slight bump of energy on Monday the 31st, with the swell jumping to 4 ft – 5 ft, but it’s coming from the NE with a short period of 6-7 seconds. That’s messy, wind-swell junk. The combined energy reads 143-167 (moderate wave energy), but it’s still cross-shore and lumpy, so it’s not going to be any good for a clean surf. If you’re a kiter, that might be a fun session, but for a traditional paddle surfer, you’re better off staying home.
After that, it drops right back down again. Through the first week of September, we’re looking at tiny waves, often nothing at all, with energy values often at zero. The 5th of September might have a slight pulse, but it’s small and cross-windy again. We have a long gap of nothing over the next several days.
Now, looking further out, there is a glimmer of hope. Around Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September, we see a distant, long-period swell starting to show. The period jumps to 13-14 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The size is still tiny – only 0.7 ft – but that long period is a sign that something might be building. The wind is lighter for that Monday, 9 mph from the NE, which will help with tidiness. But it’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not certain. The energy is still weak, only 13-15, so it’s not a headline event by any stretch.
The only real standout in this whole window is that Monday the 31st bump. It’s the biggest swell we see, but the short period and cross-shore wind ruin it for surfing. Keep an eye on that early September forecast, as things can change. Right now, I’d say dust off the fishing rod, because the surfboard’s going to be gathering dust.
Rusty out.
