The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – the next couple of weeks at Rocky Point look pretty grim. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for decent waves. There isn’t a single session that rates as even a “good” option, so I’m not even going to pretend there’s a standout. We’ve got 16 days of poor surf conditions ahead.
Let’s start with today, Friday the 17th of July, and the weekend. Thursday morning saw a tiny 2ft swell from the west, with a period of 14 seconds. That period is long enough to suggest a weak groundswell, but with combined energy at just 142 (moderate), and easterly cross-off winds blowing 12–15 mph, it’s not doing anything for us. The water’s a pleasant 79°, which is about average for this time of year. Friday afternoon is the same story: 2ft, cross-off wind. Saturday and Sunday get even smaller – dropping to 1ft and then 1.0ft with the wind shifting to a cross-shore. By Sunday afternoon, we’re looking at a short-period 2ft NNE swell at 8 seconds and lumpy cross-chop. There’s no energy here.
Then we hit a proper dead zone. From Monday the 21st of July through to Thursday the 23rd, there’s essentially nothing – zero swell and a bumpy ocean. Friday the 24th brings a whisper of 1.0ft NNW swell, but combined energy is just 15 (very weak) and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off. Not worth getting out of bed for.
The next week goes totally flat until we see a pulse around Monday the 27th of July. That morning, a short-period 7ft NE swell arrives with combined energy hitting 655 (moderate to strong). The problem is that period is only 8 seconds and the wind is a cross-shore breeze at 12 mph. With that size and those conditions at a reef break, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s going to be messy and lumpy. Tuesday the 28th drops to 5ft, still short-period, still cross-shore, and the energy falls to 254 (moderate). The rest of that week trickles down to nothing.
So, bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. For a break that’s normally very consistent, this is a real bummer. It won’t stay this poor forever, though – forecasts can change. But right now? Leave the board in the shed.
Rusty.
