G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Rocky Point over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ve gotta be honest with you – it’s a pretty grim outlook for a solid stretch. The next week and a bit is looking like a write-off, with poor surf conditions and barely a ripple. We’re stuck in a real flat spell. From now through to about Monday the 14th of July, the swell is tiny, often under 0.5 ft, and the wind is a stubborn cross-shore from the ENE, blowing at 15 to 22 mph, which is just chopping everything up. Even the combined energy is weak, barely cracking 40 (41) early on, and it’s not until the 12th that we see any real energy, but even then the waves are still too small and messy.
The first sign of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 15th of July. The morning has a bit of swell – 2 ft from the west at 16 seconds – and the wind finally swings to a cross-off breeze from the ENE at 9 mph. The combined energy jumps to 239 (moderate), and the water is sitting at a warm 79°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. The wave comment is still “marginal,” but it’s the best we’ve seen. That afternoon the wind picks up a little but stays clean, with 2 ft west swell at 15 seconds and energy at 282. It’s not pumping, but it’s rideable and clean.
Thursday the 16th of July keeps the trend going. The morning session has 2 ft from the west at 15 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the east at 12 mph. Combined energy is 216 (moderate). It’s still small, but if you’re keen, that’s your window. The afternoon gets a bit more cross-shore and loses the clean factor.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see the swell drop back to 1 ft to 2 ft, and the confidence drops. Nothing really stands out after that – the second week just fades away into tiny, weak waves again.
So, what’s the pick? Honestly, there’s no true standout here. The best on offer is the Wednesday morning the 15th of July – that clean 2 ft west swell at 16 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze, is the only time you’ll get anything close to a decent wave. The swell direction from the west works well for Rocky Point, which is a reef break that’s very consistent and takes a NW optimum – so this west swell is in the ballpark. It’s an intermediate break, and with that 2 ft, it’s fine for most. But don’t expect a crowd-free session – it’s often busy here.
If you’re a beginner, the whole period is tiny but safe, and the bigger stuff never gets over 5 ft, so no worries there. For experts, there’s nothing to get excited about.
That’s the rundown. Not much to write home about, but mid-July might give you a few clean, small waves. Keep an eye on the charts.
Rusty.
