Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Rock Wave.
This is a reef setup that needs a good south in the swell window to fire, and we get a couple of proper bursts. The water is sitting at 64°, a solid 4° colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The first real standout hits us on the morning of Saturday, July 4th. That morning is the pick of the first week. We’ve got a clean 8ft SE groundswell at a long 12 seconds. The wind is glassy from the west at 3 mph, making for perfect conditions. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1773 – that’s a solid, powerful punch. This is intermediate territory; the size and power will test you, but the quality is excellent.
Sunday the 5th morning still offers a clean 5ft SE swell with a light offshore breeze, but the energy drops to 633. It’s fun, but not a standout like Saturday.
We hit a flat spell from the 6th through the 8th with tiny, weak swell. Then Thursday the 9th morning brings the next real highlight. Another strong S groundswell, 7ft at a very long 14 seconds, and clean cross-off wind. The energy jumps back up to 1804. This is a proper groundswell with serious grunt – the kind that will set up beautifully on a reef like this. It’s for experienced surfers only at this size.
From the 10th onward, the wind gets messy and inconsistent. There’s another pulse on the 10th with a 7ft S swell, but the cross-wind and rain spoil the party. The 11th stays lumpy. The 12th is a write-off with fresh onshore wind and short period windswell.
The second week offers a few clean mornings but the swell is small. Monday the 13th morning is clean from the NNW with 4ft E windswell, but the energy is only 240. Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th are tiny or messy. Thursday the 16th morning has a clean 3ft S groundswell at 14 seconds, but the energy is minimal. Friday the 17th morning is clean with a 3ft E windswell. Worth a paddle if you’re desperate, but nothing to get excited about.
So there you have it. Your two best windows are the morning of Saturday the 4th and the morning of Thursday the 9th. The rest of the run is either flat, windy, or too small.
Rusty.
