Well, I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough one. For the first week and a half, it’s a ghost town out there. Honestly, from now until the end of August, there’s nothing worth getting wet for. The surf is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is just pathetic. You’re looking at a solid 10-day stretch of clean, but flat, conditions. If you’re a beginner, you might get a knee-high dribble on the 27th, but even then, the period is a short 4 seconds, so it’s all wind chop. This is a dry spell, plain and simple.

We finally get a glimmer of hope on Monday, September 2nd. The morning session shows a light cross-onshore breeze with a small 1ft swell from the ESE, and the period stretches to 13 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 6-4, but it’s a sign of life. The wind stays light, so it’s not all bad.

Now, let’s talk about the real standout, and it’s a long-range promise. Keep your eyes on Thursday, September 5th and into the weekend. Saturday the 5th of September is looking like the pick of the forecast. The morning has a clean 1ft swell from the ENE, with a solid 12-second period, and the wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the SW. The combined energy is still modest at 5-4, but the conditions are clean. The afternoon gets even better: a glassy offshore wind from the WSW, 1ft of swell, and the same 12-second period. The energy ticks up to 5-8. It’s not big, but it’s the cleanest, most rideable wave of the entire window. The water temperature is a warm 86°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

A word of caution: this is a reef-and-beach setup, so a longer period swell like this (over 11 seconds) can sometimes make the take-off a bit more critical, especially at a spot like Reef Road. It’s also an advanced wave, so if you’re not confident in your ability to handle a steep, consistent drop, give it a wide berth. And because it’s consistent, expect a few other heads in the water, especially with conditions this clean.

The Monday after, September 7th, is also worth a mention. The morning is glassy with a 1ft, 11-second swell from the NE, and the energy is back up to 6-7. It’s a similar story: small, but clean. The following day, the 8th, sees the swell bump up to 3ft from the NE, with a 9-second period and the combined energy finally hitting moderate territory at 13-9 (139). But the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be messy. For the experts, that might be a session, but it’s not the standout.

So, to wrap it up: if you’re patient, the best call is Saturday, September 5th. The morning and afternoon are both clean, with a long-period groundswell that will offer proper shape. It’s not a big swell, but it’s the best we’ve got. After that, Monday the 7th is a solid backup. The rest of the period is a write-off until that point.
