The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get to it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the forecast for our stretch of coast around Reef Road.

Honestly, I’m a bit gutted to say this, but the next 16 days are looking like a total flat spell. We’ve got a serious lack of swell energy, and the conditions are just not lining up for a proper session. The water temp is sitting at 86°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least a dip in the ocean won’t be a shock to the system.

For the first week, the swell is tiny, barely scraping 1ft on Monday the 27th of July, with a weak 8-second period from the ENE. The combined energy is a paltry 13 (weak). It’s just not enough to get out of the car. The wind is mostly light and offshore or cross-offshore through the mornings, which is promising, but there’s nothing for it to work on. We’re looking at a solid 10 days of nothing but flat, poor surf conditions. It’s a real bummer.

Moving into the first week of August, the swell picks up a little, but it’s still short-period, choppy stuff. By Thursday the 6th of August, we start seeing a tiny bump to 2ft, but with a period of only 4 seconds and cross-onshore winds, it’s just messy. The combined energy creeps up to 13 (weak), but it’s not surfable. By Friday the 7th, the swell is up to 2ft, but the period is still just 4 seconds, and we’ve got a moderate breeze from the SE making it choppy. The combined energy hits 23 (weak), but it’s all wind-slop, really.

The second week, from the 8th to the 11th of August, is more of the same. We’re stuck with a weak, short-period swell, rarely exceeding 2ft, and the wind is constantly cross-onshore or onshore, making it lumpy and choppy. The combined energy never gets past 32 (weak). It’s just not a paddle-out scenario. The setup is so poor and the swell is so small and weak, that if you’re looking for a thrill, this is more of a kite surfing kind of coastline right now than a traditional surf spot.

So, there it is. A long, flat, and frustrating 16-day outlook. No standouts, no hidden gems. It’s a blank run for the area, which does happen, but it’s a long one. Forecasts can change, so don’t give up hope, but for now, I’d give the board a rest and polish the wax.

Rusty.
