The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s headed our way at Reef Road. This is a consistent, advanced-level reef-and-beach setup, fairly exposed to the swell, and it usually needs the wind to play nice. Right now, the water temp is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Okay, straight up – the next week is going to be a tough sit. From Monday the 31st through to Monday the 7th of September, it’s pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at tiny swell, mostly under 2 ft, with periods under 8 seconds, and cross-onshore winds that are going to leave the surface messy. The combined swell energy is barely registering, often in the single digits or low teens. There are a few moments of glassy conditions on Sunday the 6th morning, but the swell is just too small to get excited about. It’s poor surf, plain and simple. You’d be better off checking the forecast again later.

Then things start to turn a corner. On Tuesday the 8th of September, we get a pulse of energy. The morning shows a 3 ft swell from the NNE with a 7-second period and light cross-offshore winds from the SW. The combined energy jumps to 100, finally pushing into moderate territory. The conditions are clean, and while it’s not perfect, it’s surfable. Still, it’s only a low score for quality, so keep expectations in check.

The standout window looks to be Wednesday the 9th of September morning. That’s our best bet in the whole forecast. Swell pushes to 4 ft from the NE with a 10-second period, energy hits 263 (moderate), and the wind is light cross-offshore from the WSW. Conditions are clean. It’s not huge, but that’s the kind of setup that can produce some decent, lined-up waves at Reef Road. For an advanced spot, this is where you want to be.

After that, things fade. Thursday the 10th morning offers a smaller but clean option with 3 ft from the NE and light wind. And then it trickles down into tiny, gutless waves through the second week. The morning of Friday the 11th has some clean 1 ft surf with offshore wind, but it’s pretty marginal. By Saturday the 12th, you’re back to glassy conditions but barely a ripple.

So, if you’re looking to paddle out, circle Wednesday the 9th of September morning. That’s the one with the most going for it. Everything else in the next two weeks is either too small, too windy, or both.

Rusty.
