The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight: the next 16 days at Redondo Beach are slim pickings. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore muck. The first half of the window is basically a write-off for proper waves—plenty of clean mornings but barely enough bump to push a longboard. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 69°, so you won’t need a thick suit.

Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are flat-out poor. Swell sits at 1 ft with a south-southwest direction and a period of 13 seconds, but that’s groundswell wasted on a beach break. Combined energy (135) is weak. Winds are cross-onshore or onshore, making for rippled and messy conditions. Not worth paddling out.

Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 27th sees a tiny bump—swell up to 2 ft to maybe 3 ft from the south or southwest, period dropping from 19 seconds down to 12 seconds. Energy climbs into the moderate range (up to 476), but the quality is still marginal. The best I can say is Thursday morning the 27th: clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, 3 ft south swell. That’s the closest we get to a decent window, but it’s still small and the beach break won’t hold it well.

The standout—and I mean the only real highlight—is Saturday morning the 29th. Clear skies, a light cross-offshore wind from the SSE, and a 2 ft south-southwest groundswell at 17 seconds. Combined energy sits at 372, which is moderate. That long period means it’ll be better-shaped than the rest, but at a beach break like Redondo, those long gaps between sets might make it feel more like a waiting game than a session. Still, it’s the cleanest morning on offer. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect a few heads out. For experts only? No, it’s small enough for anyone.

Everything after that—Sunday the 30th through to Saturday the 5th of September—slides back into poor or marginal. Winds turn onshore again, swell stays under 3 ft, and energy drops off. A brief flash of 3 ft west swell on Tuesday the 1st of September (September now) but with a short 6-second period and cross-offshore wind, it’ll be choppy and weak. Not worth the drive.

In short: if you’re desperate, aim for Thursday the 27th morning or Saturday the 29th morning. Otherwise, the whole 16 days is a slow grind. Surf’s been scarce, and it looks like staying that way for a while.
