The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me talk straight about Redondo Beach.
Right now, we’ve got a long, drawn-out stretch of small, weak surf with junk winds. The water’s cooking at 70°, which is *much warmer* than usual for this time of year — a solid 6° anomaly. That’s very unusual and feels more like a bath than the Pacific.
We start off with a real dud. Wednesday the 15th through to Tuesday the 22nd is mostly a write-off. Swell is tiny, barely 1ft to 3ft, with periods that are long but the energy is just not there (combined energy mostly between 129 and 365 — weak to moderate at best). Winds are all over the place and mostly cross or onshore. There are a few mornings with clean-ish conditions, like Thursday the 16th morning and Friday the 17th morning, but the swell is just too small and weak to get excited about. Expect a long gap of several days with nothing worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer comes on Wednesday the 22nd morning. We’ve got 2ft of SSW swell at 15 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the SSE. The combined energy is still moderate at 241, but the conditions will be tidy. It’s not a standout, but it’s the first time the setup looks surfable.
Thursday the 23rd is better. Morning shows 3ft of S swell at 13 seconds with a clean cross-off breeze (combined energy 378 — moderate). Then Thursday afternoon gets *glassy* with a glassy wind from the WSW and 3ft S swell. That’s proper clean, even if the swell is small. This is the best call in the first week if you’re desperate for a slide.
Looking further out, the standout session is clearly Saturday the 25th morning. We’ve got 2ft of SSW swell, but the period is a very long 21 seconds — that’s groundswell with serious energy, and the combined energy is 749 (moderate-to-strong). The wind is glassy from the SW. That is a recipe for clean, long-period lines. Just remember, with a period over 15 seconds at a beach break, those waves might break a bit straight. But if you’re on a point or reef setup, it’ll be fun. This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window.
After that, through the 26th to the 30th, we see a mix of 2ft to 3ft swells, mostly SW, with periods dropping back to 15-18 seconds. Mornings on the 28th and 29th have clean cross-off winds again, so there’s consistent small-wave potential, but nothing that will blow your mind.
Bottom line: the first week is mostly flat and messy. The best surf is the glassy morning of Saturday the 25th July — that’s the one to pencil in. Otherwise, pick the clean mornings from the 22nd onward for a small-wave cruise. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, so expect company on any decent day.
Stay wet,
Rusty
