The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty here, and I’m lookin’ at the next couple weeks for Redondo Beach. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch for paddle surfing. The water’s sitting at about 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, like a solid 6° above average, so that’s a nice surprise if you’re just getting wet.

The first surf that’s even worth a mention doesn’t show up until Friday the 17th. We’re talkin’ a tiny 1ft swell from the southwest, but with a very long 19-second period. That’s a classic groundswell, but it’s just too small to do much with. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSE though, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is weak (168). You might get a few knee-high noodles, but don’t expect much. Saturday the 18th morning is a bit better – 2ft from the SW, 18 seconds, and still clean with that cross-off breeze. The energy picks up a bit (276), but it’s still small. It’s surfable, but only just.

We go through a few days of so-so conditions. Sunday the 19th morning is cross-shore and light, but the swell is still just 2ft. Monday the 20th sees a bump in size to 4ft from the SSW, with a 15-second period, and the energy jumps to moderate (571). The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’s clean, but the forecast calls it marginal with tide issues. That’s probably the best we’ll see for a few days, but it’s not a standout.

Tuesday the 21st morning is similar – 4ft from the SSW, 13 seconds, light cross-onshore wind. Still marginal. By afternoon, the onshore wind picks up, and it’s game over until the next week.

There’s a gap of several days here with no real surf on offer. Wednesday the 22nd through Saturday the 26th are all onshore slop with small, weak swell. The wind is mostly onshore, especially in the afternoons, making it choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.

Now, Monday the 27th – that’s the one to circle. The morning is looking pretty good. We’ve got 3ft from the SSW, 18-second period, clean with a light cross-off breeze from the SSE. The combined energy is moderate (625). The wind is light, so it’ll be glassy. That’s the only real standout in the whole 16 days, but with a long-period swell like that on a beach break, it might stand up a bit too straight. Still, for clean small waves, it’s the pick of the bunch.

After that, Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th offer marginal morning windows with light cross-shore wind, but the swell is weak and the afternoons are blown out by onshore winds. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st are even worse – small, weak, and choppy. By the first of August, it’s the same story: small, onshore, and not worth your time.

Honestly, for the whole 16-day run, the only window that gets me a little excited is Monday the 27th morning. Everything else is small, clean but weak, or blown out. If you’re a beginner, the small stuff on the 18th or 20th mornings might be okay, but the 4ft to 4ft days are right on the edge of being too much for a learner. For the rest of us, keep your eyes on the 27th, but don’t hold your breath.

Stay salty.
Rusty
