The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – the next ten days or so are a bit of a grind for Redondo Beach. We’ve got a real slow start, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel if you’re willing to wait. The water is sitting at a balmy 70°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, almost like bathwater.
We kick off with nothing happening. Tuesday the 14th through to the end of that week is pretty much a write-off. We’re talking tiny 1ft swell with a long period of 12-19 seconds, but the wind is messy – cross-on, onshore, or just plain wrong. The wave energy is weak (139-168), and the surf is poor. You’d be better off with a cold drink than a board.
Then we get into the weekend of the 18th and 19th. The swell ticks up a hair to 2ft (SW, 18 seconds), and the energy climbs to a moderate 227 (Saturday morning). The wind is cross-off and clean Saturday morning, giving us a window of “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not gonna blow your mind, but it’s the first time you could actually get wet without it being a total chore. The next week (20th-23rd) is mostly back to poor conditions with onshore winds, though Thursday the 23rd morning offers a clean, cross-off breeze on a tiny 2ft swell – still weak energy (129), so don’t expect much.
Now, hold onto your leash, because the real standout is Friday the 24th of July. The morning session is where it’s at. We get a solid 4ft swell from the S, with a period of 15 seconds, pumping in with very strong energy (746). The wind is from the SSE at a light 6 mph, giving us cross-off, clean conditions. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the pick of the bunch – a proper, clean, fun-sized groundswell. The afternoon will get a bit cross-on and messy, so get on it early.
Saturday the 25th morning is also a beauty, with a slightly bigger 4ft S swell (period 14 seconds) and even stronger energy (917). Again, light cross-off SSE winds will keep it clean. The swell is getting a bit chunky, but it’s still in that fun zone for most. After that, we drop back to smaller 2ft SW swells for the last few days of the period, with some clean mornings (27th and 28th) offering “good surf conditions” and moderate energy (330-474).
So, the plan is simple: wait it out, and then be on the water early on Friday the 24th or Saturday the 25th. That’s your best shot for this whole 16-day stretch. The rest is just filler.
Rusty.
