The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you, this stretch of coast is going through a bit of a flat spell. For the next week and a half, the waves are tiny and the conditions are mostly average to poor. Don't get your hopes up for anything special. We're looking at a long gap of small, messy surf before things potentially perk up right at the very end of the forecast.
Let's start at Redondo Beach. The water is sitting at 70°F which is much warmer than normal, a solid 36°F above average for this time of year, so at least it’ll be pleasant for a paddle.
Now, through the rest of August right into the start of September, it's a grind. Swell heights are hovering between 1 ft and 3 ft, mostly from the SSW or SW. The period is long, between 13 and 19 seconds, which suggests there's some deep ocean push behind it, but the size just isn't there to make it count. Most mornings have a light cross-onshore breeze, and afternoons are pretty much blown-out onshore. The combined wave energy is mostly moderate, bouncing between 124 and 337 - it's there, but the shape and wind just aren't cooperating.
There is one morning that stands out as a true highlight. Wednesday, 2nd September, the early session is the pick of the entire run. We’ve got a little 2 ft SSW swell, period of 16 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE. This is going to clean things right up. The combined energy is moderate (226), but with those clean, glassy conditions, it’ll be far more enjoyable than the number suggests. This is your one window. The rest of the time it's either onshore, choppy, or too small.
Honestly, for the bulk of this outlook, the conditions are so blown-out and small that the setup at this exposed beach is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
So, to sum it up: the next two weeks are a write-off except for that one clean Wednesday morning. Mark it in your calendar.
Rusty.
