The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for the imperial crew.
So, we’ve got Punta Gasparino on the radar. It’s a beach and point setup, and right off the bat, the water is sitting at 87°, which is a solid 5° warmer than what’s normal for this time of year. That’s pretty notable—you’ll be surfing in bathwater.
The outlook kicks off on Tuesday, August 18th, with a bit of swell rolling in. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 566, but the surf is on the small side and the forecast is calling it marginal. Not a great start. The wind is light offshore from the WNW, which is a positive, but the swell is just a touch under 4 ft, and the 15-second period tells us it’s a solid groundswell. That’s good for a point break like this one, but it’s inconsistent here, so don’t expect a wave every minute.
Wednesday and Thursday keep the trend going: small waves around 3 ft to 3 ft, still with that long-period SSW groundswell, but the wind stays light offshore. The scores are low—it’s just not doing much yet. The energy stays in the 300-400 range, which is weak to moderate.
Friday the 21st is a write-off. The swell drops to 2 ft and the wind goes cross-onshore. The combined energy dips to 288, and conditions are poor. Not worth paddling out.
Then we get a little glimmer on Saturday the 22nd afternoon. The swell is still small at 3 ft, but the wind goes glassy—offshore from the WSW at just 3 mph. That’s clean, smooth conditions. The combined energy is 312, so it’s not a powerhouse, but for a small wave session on a board with some foam, it’ll be fun. This is the best on offer in the first week, but it’s far from a standout.
Sunday and Monday see the swell nudging up to 3 ft, but the wind is cross-onshore or light offshore, and the energy is building back up to around 500-550. Marginal, but at least the period stays long (13-17 seconds), so there’s some shape potential.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. From Friday the 28th of August into the first days of September, the swell starts to fire up. On Friday morning, the 28th, we’re looking at 5 ft of SSW swell, with a 17-second period and combined energy of 1289—that’s strong wave energy. That’s a legitimate groundswell, and it’s pushing into the 5 ft range where it’s getting a bit too much for beginners, but for the average surfer, it’s game on. The wind is offshore from the W at 6 mph, which will keep it clean. This is the standout window. The best conditions look to be on the Friday afternoon and Saturday, but the wind goes cross-onshore on Saturday afternoon, so take the morning sessions.
By Sunday the 30th, it’s still 5 ft but the wind is stronger and cross-onshore, making it a bit choppy. The energy is still high, but the quality drops off. The following week, into September 1st and 2nd, the swell drops back to 3 ft, but the period on Wednesday the 2nd jumps to a very long 22 seconds—that’s seriously long-period groundswell. Combined energy is 1193, so it’s got punch, but that kind of period can make a beach break close out or run straight. At a point break like Punta Gasparino, it could be excellent, but it’s a long-range forecast, so keep your fingers crossed.
Overall, the first week is a bit of a struggle. The standout is the weekend of the 28th-29th of August, especially the Friday morning, with 5 ft of clean, offshore swell. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The rest is small, inconsistent, and often marginal. If you’re looking for a paddle, don’t hold your breath until the end of the month.
Rusty.
