The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

We’re looking at a pretty drawn-out stretch here at Palm Beach (Todos Santos). Honestly, the next 16 days aren’t looking like they’ll have us shouting from the rooftops. The first surf worth mentioning is on Friday the 7th of August, but it’s a real tough start. The swell is there, but the wind is all wrong, making it a bit of a chop fest. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest suit.

The outlook is a long grind of marginal conditions. From the 7th all the way through to the 22nd of August, there are no proper standouts, just a lot of mornings and afterdays with onshore or cross-onshore winds messing up the lines. The swell direction is mostly from the SSW, which is okay for this exposed spot, but the periods are all over the place, from short 13-second window to some longer 18 and 19-second pulses. Those longer period sets (18-19 seconds) will bring some real energy and better shape, but they’ll also mean longer waits between sets. The combined energy is moderate, often in the 500-700 range, but it jumps up to a strong 1099 and 1239 around the 14th and 15th of August. For a Saturday and Sunday, that’s the biggest pulse of the run, but the winds are still going to be cross-onshore, so it’s going to be messy and a bit of a battle.

For a break that’s consistent and exposed, it’s a shame the wind is so persistent. The surf size is mostly in the 2 ft to 5 ft range, so it’s never too big for a decent paddle, but the wind is just killing the quality. The best bet, if you’re desperate, is probably the weekend of the 15th and 16th of August. The swell is a little bigger, and the winds are lighter, especially on the Saturday morning. It’s still not clean, but it’s the most promising of a pretty average bunch. Keep in mind, this is an advanced wave, so it’s not for learners, and it can get busy, so expect company.

So, to sum it up: a long, drawn-out period of onshore winds and choppy surf. The biggest pulse of swell around the 14th and 15th gets ruined by the wind. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup might look more interesting than for paddle surfing. Hopefully, the forecasts change, because this is a tough run.

Rusty.
