The Lowdown
Hey crew, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at San Jose Rivermouth. It’s a one-spot show this time around, and I’ll be honest: there are big dead spots where you’re better off doing something else. It’s an inconsistent spot at the best of times, but when it fires, it’s special.
Water temp is running real warm, about 85°F, which is a good 6°F above normal for this time of year. That’s a big deal.
Friday the 17th is a total dud. We’ve got a 1 ft south swell with light onshore wind and weak energy (388). The afternoon is a little better, but still marginal with a cross-on breeze. Saturday the 18th is the same story: poor morning, and while the swell picks up to 2 ft from the southwest with a 13-second period in the afternoon, the wind is onshore. The energy is moderate (980).
Sunday the 19th afternoon is a small tease. The swell drops to 0.8 ft, but it’s a long-period 17-second groundswell. The wind goes light and cross-shore, and the energy is moderate (820). Good sign, just tiny.
The first real highlight is Tuesday the 22nd afternoon. The swell jumps to 2 ft from the south-southwest (14-second period) with a clean cross-offshore wind from the west at 12 mph. The energy is strong (1224). That’s a good session. Wednesday the 23rd afternoon is another standout. The swell holds at 2 ft from the south-southwest (12-second period) with a clean 12 mph cross-offshore wind. The energy is very strong (1391). That’s the pick of the first week. Not for beginners.
The end of the week is a bit of a lull. Marginal surf, onshore wind, not worth the drive.
Then we get to the big prize: Saturday the 25th afternoon. This is the one. A 2 ft swell from the southwest with a 19-second period. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the west-southwest at 9 mph. The energy is through the roof at 2316. That’s called out as excellent for experienced surfers. Expect fast, powerful waves. Sunday the 26th afternoon is also a winner – 1 ft, 18-second period, clean cross-offshore wind. Still very strong energy (1725).
The rest of the second week has some okay sessions, like Tuesday the 28th afternoon and Wednesday the 29th, but they don’t touch that Saturday. Thursday the 30th afternoon is another standout for experienced surfers. The swell is 2 ft from the southwest (11-second period) with a clean 12 mph offshore wind from the west-northwest. That’s a fun, punchy session with strong energy (1492).
The forecast fades out on the 31st and the 1st of August. Small swell, messy wind. Not worth it.
So, your best bets are Wednesday the 23rd afternoon, the Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th window, and Thursday the 30th afternoon. The absolute standout is that Saturday the 25th session. Get there early because the crowds are likely, and that river mouth can get busy on a good day. The long period will make it a bit tricky, but that’s the one to chase.
Rusty.
