The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you. We’ve got a long, tough stretch ahead for Praia do Sobral. This is going to be a grind.

Right off the bat, the whole first week and a bit is a write-off. The wind is blowing onshore or cross-onshore pretty much every day, from the SSE, SE, or E. The swell is small, mostly under 4ft, and the period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds, which means weak, bumpy lines. The combined energy is moderate at best, hitting 472 on Wednesday the 5th morning, but it’s let down by the wind. The water is a balmy 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, but you won’t want to be out there for the waves.

From Wednesday the 5th of August through to Saturday the 16th of August, it’s a long, flat, choppy mess. Don’t bother. The conditions are just poor, with the cross-shore wind making everything a crumbly mess.

Now, there’s a little glimmer of hope on Monday the 17th of August. The swell direction swings around to a long-period S and SSE groundswell. On Monday morning, we’re looking at 3ft of S swell with a 15-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 518 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-shore from the NE, which is actually decent. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the only one in the whole window with a flicker of life. The long period is good for shape, but at a beach break like this, it can make things a bit straight and fat. Still, it’s the best you’re going to get.

The week after that, from Tuesday the 18th, it goes back to the same old story: onshore winds and junky conditions. There’s a final pulse of energy on Thursday the 20th of August, with a solid 6ft SE swell and a combined energy of 1812 (strong), but the wind is still onshore from the ESE at 13 mph, making it a messy, rain-swept day. Too big for the conditions, and only for the experts if they’re desperate.

So, to sum it up: the only real window is Monday morning, the 17th of August. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath. The rest of the 16 days is a no-go. This spot is really struggling for a clean wave right now.

Rusty.
