The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Praia de Intermares over the next 16 days is a real struggle. We're looking at a long, frustrating stretch of poor surf conditions with no real standout days to get excited about. The whole forecast period is essentially one big gap for decent waves.

The first real chance of anything even remotely rideable kicks off on Tuesday afternoon, the 4th of August, but it's a mess. We've got a 5ft swell from the ESE, but it's a short-period 8 second windswell, and the wind is a cross-on 15 mph from the SE. The water temp is around 80°, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 301, but it's all slop with poor surf quality. Don't bother.

The whole first week is a write-off. Wednesday the 5th through to Sunday the 9th is all onshore or cross-onshore winds with weak, short-period swells. Wave heights bounce between 2ft and 4.5ft, but the wind is relentless, keeping it choppy and messy. The combined energy is weak to moderate (103 to 176), but it's not surfable.

The second week doesn't get any better. From Monday the 10th to Wednesday the 19th of August, it's the same sad story. Mostly cross-onshore winds, with the swell staying small and weak. There's a slight bump in energy on the 11th and 14th (234 and 347 combined energy), but it's still a short-period windswell with poor surf quality. The wind is never favorable, and the waves are just not clean.

The only thing worth mentioning is the very end of the run. On Sunday the 16th, we start to see the swell period stretch out to 13 and 14 seconds, which is a proper groundswell signal. The combined energy also picks up a bit, hitting 266 on the 16th and 261 on the 19th. But the swell height is tiny – 1.5ft to 2.5ft – and the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, so it's not going to offer anything for a surfer. This setup is a classic case of a longer period swell that needs a perfect point or reef break to work, and even then, there's no power.

Look, I'm not one to sugarcoat it. This is a bleak run. With the consistent onshore flow and lack of any decent, clean swell, the coastline is going to be flatter than a pancake for the better part of two weeks. If you're a kitesurfer, the wind is there, but for a paddle surfer, save your energy and wait for the next system. The forecasts can change, but right now, there's nothing to chase.
