The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the forecast for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough run. The whole 16-day window is looking like a write-off for any decent surf. We’ve got a blank stretch from the start all the way through, with not a single recommendation in the mix. The only name on the board is Praia de Intermares, and it's just not happening.

The core problem is that the swell is mostly coming from the ESE, which is the opposite of what this spot likes. It's a sheltered break that needs WNW winds to work, and we're getting the complete wrong direction. The wave energy is weak to moderate at best, with values mostly in the low hundreds (e.g., 628, 301, 414) – that's not enough to push any quality through. The water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The winds are a real killer, too. It’s a near-constant cross-on or onshore breeze, mostly from the SE and SSE, blowing between 9 mph and 16 mph. That’s going to keep the surface all choppy and messy. Even when the swell bumps up to 6 ft on Tuesday the 4th, the wind is cross-on at 12 mph, making it a total dog. The waves are short-period, mostly 6 to 8 seconds, which means weak, fat, and unorganized.

Looking ahead, the middle of the second week (around Sunday the 16th) does show a little pulse of longer-period swell at 12 seconds from the E, but it’s only 2 ft. That’s not enough to bother with, and the wind is still onshore. Around Tuesday the 18th, we see 5 ft swell from the E, but it’s a short 6-second period and onshore winds again. The pattern doesn't change.

Honestly, this is one of those stretches where the forecast could change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, maybe check if the wind ever swings offshore, but based on this, I’d leave the boards at home.

Rusty.
