The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, chopped-up surf ahead. If you’re thinking about getting wet, you’ll be doing more fighting than gliding. This stretch looks more interesting for kites than for paddle surfing.

The one day to circle on the calendar is Friday, the 14th of August. That morning, things finally click. We’re looking at a 2ft swell from the southeast with a long 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is light and offshore from the west, leaving the surface glassy. This is your window. Praia Grande will be the spot. It’s not going to be big, but it’ll be the cleanest, most lined-up surf we’ve had in ages.

Before that, there are a few mornings that are “nearly” but not quite. Saturday the 8th and the morning of the 13th have some clean conditions, but the swell is just too weak to be worth the drive. Those are for the locals who live on the beach, not for a special trip. After that Friday high point, the weekend and the second week fade back into the same old story – onshore winds and small, lumpy surf.

So here’s the deal: be patient, wait for Friday the 14th, and you’ll be rewarded. The water temp is about normal for this time of year, so a wetsuit is fine. That’s the one to go for. Everything else is a write-off.

Rusty out.
