Table - best surf conditions forecast for Porthtowan over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a brew and listen up. It's Rusty here, and I've got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Porthtowan. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth getting wet for, so don't bother rushing to wax your board.
We kick off on Friday the 10th with a tiny 3ft WNW swell, but the energy is weak (135). The wind is a cross-off, which is about the only positive, but it's just not enough to get excited about. The water is about average for the time of year.
From there, it's a real struggle. Saturday the 11th through to the end of the third week is a write-off. We're looking at days of poor conditions with small, weak swells and cross-off breezes that just don't do the place any favours. The swell drops to nothing, down to 0.7ft and 1ft, and the energy readings are pathetic, often below 100. There's a bit of a spike on the 18th with a 4ft to 4ft northerly swell, but it's accompanied by a messy cross-shore and onshore wind, churning it up into a choppy, lumpy mess. It's not surfable, it's just a mess. The wind is so strong on the 19th and 20th, with a fresh breeze and fresh cross-onshore, that this setup is honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The stand-out, and I use that term loosely, comes way out on Friday the 24th of July. We finally see a jump in the swell energy, hitting 322, with a 4ft to 5ft WNW swell arriving. The period is a reasonable 10 seconds, which is a groundswell, so it should have some shape. The problem is the wind will be cross-onshore, and by the afternoon it's a moderate breeze, so it'll be choppy. It's a "best of a bad bunch" situation, but it's a long way off, so the forecast is less certain. If that wind switches to a light offshore, we might have a sloppy, fun session. But as it stands, don't hold your breath. Saturday the 25th is similar, but still cross-shore. The whole stretch is a bleak one, I'm afraid.
Rusty.
