The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Porthtowan. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a flicker of hope right at the very end.
The whole 16-day window is a frustrating run, to be honest. We’ve got a big gap of poor surf conditions right from the start, with nothing worth paddling out for until we get into the first week of September. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The only real standout in this whole period looks like Saturday morning, the 5th of September. The swell is tiny at 3 ft from the SW with a short period of 5 seconds, so it’s not going to be powerful, but the wind is light and cross-offshore from the ENE (9 mph), which should keep things clean. The combined energy is weak at 59, so don’t expect much push, but it’s surfable. For a beginner spot like Porthtowan, it’s the best we’ve got, and it’s the only score in the whole forecast that’s above zero. Crowds are a possibility here, especially on a clean Saturday morning.
Before that, from the 21st of August right through to the 4th of September, it’s really poor. There’s a brief moment on the 26th where we see a jump in swell to 6 ft from the SSW, but the period is just 7 seconds and the wind is a strong cross-offshore. It’s clean, but the quality is poor, and the energy is moderate at 359. The 28th and 29th see bigger swell, up to 8 ft from the W, but with cross-onshore winds and an 8-second period, it’s choppy and messy. That’s too big for beginners anyway, and the wind ruins it for everyone else. By the 30th, it’s still poor.
So, in short, you’re looking at a long wait. Saturday morning, the 5th of September, is the one to pencil in for a slow, clean session. The rest of the time, it’s a write-off.
Rusty.
