The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and let's talk about what's coming up for Playa do Carreiro. This is a river mouth setup, exposed to the open ocean, so it can fire when the conditions line up. The water temp is running about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.

The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag. We've got some sizeable swell on the horizon, but the wind is going to be a real pain for a lot of it. The standout windows are clear, but you'll have to be patient.

Thursday 20th and Friday 21st are a write-off. The swell is there, around 4 ft to 6 ft, coming from the NW, but the wind is a messy cross-off from the NNW and N, gusting up to 19 mph. It's just not clean.

Saturday 22nd is worse. The swell drops right off to 3 ft, wind is cross-on from the SSE, and it's just poor.

Sunday 23rd is our first real glimmer of hope. The morning session looks fantastic. We've got a 4 ft W swell, a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glassy. The combined energy is moderate at 235. This is a proper chance to get some clean, fun waves. The afternoon gets a bit messy with light rain and a cross-shore wind.

Monday 24th through Tuesday 25th – forget it. Strong winds, rain, and total chop. There's a spike of 8 ft on Monday afternoon from the SSW, but it's blown out and ugly. That's for the kite surfers, not for us.

Wednesday 26th is a teaser. The morning has a 6 ft W swell with light cross-on wind, but it's still a marginal call. The afternoon is messy again.

Now, here's the real highlight. Thursday 27th morning. This is the one. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the WNW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is strong at 693. And the wind? Glassy. Dead flat. This is a session for experienced surfers – that's a powerful wave – but it will be absolutely firing. The afternoon goes onshore, so get in early.

Friday 28th and Saturday 29th are a letdown after that. The swell is still running 5 ft to 4 ft from the NW, but the wind is cross or cross-off, and the quality is just average. Saturday morning is cleanish, but nothing special.

Sunday 30th morning is another clean, glassy window. The swell is 4 ft from the NW, period 9 seconds, and the wind is zero. The combined energy is moderate at 225. It's a good, fun-sized day for everyone.

Monday 31st morning is also clean, with a light cross-off wind and a 4 ft NW swell. Good, clean waves.

Tuesday 1st September is a bit of a flat spot. Swell drops to 3 ft with a glassy morning, but it's very ordinary.

Wednesday 2nd September morning is a repeat of the clean conditions – 4 ft NW swell, light cross-off wind, and a combined energy of 306. Another solid small-wave day.

And then we have a real long-range standout. Thursday 3rd September morning. The swell builds to 6 ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy. The combined energy is a strong 604. This is another prime, clean session on the cards. It's a way off, so keep an eye on the forecast, but it's looking promising.

Friday 4th September morning – the swell is 6 ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-shore, which is a bit of a downer for the quality.

Overall, the best bets are the glassy mornings: Sunday 23rd, Thursday 27th, Sunday 30th, Thursday 3rd, and Wednesday 2nd for a smaller one. The rest of the time, the wind is going to be a struggle.

Stay salty,
Rusty
