The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag for Playa do Carreiro. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, but there’s a couple of moments that’ll make it worth paddling out.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Friday morning, August 21st. It’s not the best, but it’s something. The swell is coming from the NW at 5ft with a 10-second period, moderate energy (526), and a clean cross-off wind from the north. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing weird. It’s a river break, so it’s a little more forgiving than a straight beach. It’s a marginal call though, so keep your expectations in check.
The next standout is Sunday morning, August 23rd. A cleaner looking window with a 5ft swell from the west at 10 seconds, and a light cross-off from the ESE. The energy is moderate (422), and the wind is light, making for clean conditions. This is the best call of the first week.
Now, Thursday August 27th is a no-go. The swell is up to 7ft to 8ft from the WNW, but the wind is straight onshore and the energy is high (682-1050). It’s blown out and messy. For the experts only, and even then, it’s not pretty.
The real standout of the whole forecast is Friday morning, August 28th. This is the one. A massive 10ft WNW groundswell with a 11-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is pumping at 1935. This is for experts only – over 8ft, it’s big and powerful. The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean, but the size means it’s not for the faint-hearted. The swell is a bit too big for this break, so it’s a serious session. If you’re not a pro, give it a miss.
Saturday morning, August 29th offers a nice reset. The swell drops to 5ft from the NW, and we get a clean offshore wind from the NNE. Energy is moderate (307). This is a much more manageable size, and the offshore wind will groom it nicely. A good option for the intermediate crew.
The second week looks quieter. Wednesday morning, September 2nd, shows a 5ft WNW swell with a clean cross-off breeze and moderate energy (312). It’s a decent, workable option.
Then, on Saturday morning, September 5th, we get a very interesting one. A 3ft swell from the NW, but with a very long 14-second period, and a light cross-off wind. The energy is still moderate (563). This is a long-period groundswell, which means better shaped waves and more grunt, but it can be a bit straight at beach breaks. At a river break, it might actually line up nicely. It’s promising, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
There’s a big gap in quality mid-week, especially from August 25th to 26th when it’s pretty much all onshore wind and poor conditions. The crowd factor at Playa do Carreiro is “sometimes” busy, so on the good days, expect a few other heads in the water.
Rusty out.
