The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking for Playa de la Cera – Playa Blanca over the next couple of weeks.

Gonna be honest with you, it's a tough stretch. We've got a solid 16-day window here, but the first real chance of anything ridable doesn't show up until Tuesday the 18th of August, and even then it’s a struggle. The pattern is dominated by persistent northerly winds, mostly moderate to fresh, blowing cross-off. The swell is small, weak, and short-period, mostly around 3ft to 4ft from the North with a period of just 7 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting in the low 100s to low 200s. The conditions are described as "poor" for almost the entire run. You could paddle out on the morning of the 18th, when it’s clean with a light breeze, and maybe snag a 3ft wave with 8-second period, but the energy is low (161), and it's really just 'surfable but very ordinary'. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, which is fine, but there's nothing exciting to report.

Wednesday the 19th morning is more of the same – 3ft at 8 seconds from the North, with a light breeze and clean conditions. It's the best of a bad bunch, but the energy is still weak (167). Honestly, this setup is better for a kite than a paddle board on most days, with that consistent cross-off wind and small, weak swell.

The rest of the first week and into the second is a write-off. From Thursday the 20th right through to Sunday the 30th of August, we're looking at poor conditions day after day. Winds pick up, the swell stays junky, and the scores are all zeroes. There’s a small spike on the 22nd with a 5ft swell from the North, but with a fresh breeze and a 7-second period, it’s just a messy, blown-out mess. The energy does climb into the 200s (311) and even 400s (401) on the 28th of August, but the wind is too strong and the swell is too short and poorly directed for this reef setup. These bigger days (over 5ft) with short period and onshore winds are really just for experts, if anyone at all.

The only other blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. The wind finally drops to a gentle breeze, the waves are 4ft from the North with a 7-second period, and the energy is back up to a moderate 211. The description says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". That’s the best we get, a small, short-period, average day.

After that, it's back to the poor surf blues. Monday the 31st, Tuesday the 1st of September, and Wednesday the 2nd all look like more of the same with moderate breezes and small, weak swell.

The standout, for what it's worth: It has to be the morning of Tuesday the 18th of August or Wednesday the 19th of August. It's a toss-up. The swell is small (3ft) and short-period (8 seconds), but the light breeze and clean conditions make it the most pleasant option. For this break, that's the best on offer. It’s inconsistent and rarely breaks well, so any clean, small wave is a win. But honestly, I'd keep an eye on the forecast for a change in wind direction; this northerly pattern has got us in a stranglehold.
