The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve taken a good look at what’s on offer for Playa de Lastres over the next 16 days, and honestly, it’s one of those quiet stretches that’ll test your patience. This is a river mouth setup, expert-only territory, and it’s fairly consistent normally, so a blank run like this is a bit of a surprise. But the forecasts can always flip—don’t lose hope.
The water’s sitting at 71°F, which is a solid 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a notable warm anomaly, feels more like a summer bath than the typical Asturias chill.
Right now, from Sunday 19 July through to Saturday 2 August, there’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, wind is cross or cross-on, and the wave quality is rated poor across the board. You’ll see slivers of energy—like Monday 20 July afternoon with 7ft from NE, period 8 seconds, and combined energy of 463 (moderate)—but that’s paired with a moderate cross-shore chop. Messy and uninviting. Even the glassy spells on Thursday 23 and Saturday 25 mornings only bring 2–2ft of weak, short-period swell. Not enough to push over the river bar.
The one glimmer comes on Wednesday 29 July morning. A 4ft NW groundswell, period 12 seconds, with a light cross-shore breeze from ENE. Combined energy hits 518 (moderate), and the forecast calls it marginal—tide or conditions might be questionable. The swell direction (NW) matches the optimum for this spot, and the period is long enough to hold shape, but it’s still only a maybe. Keep an eye on it, but don’t rearrange your week.
Otherwise, it’s a long, flat gap. No standouts, no recommended sessions. The break is fairly consistent, so this kind of drought is unusual, but it happens. Hang tight, and check in again.
Rusty.
