The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s check out what’s brewing for the Perran Sands stretch over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you: the opening week is a tough one for anyone looking to get a proper wave. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your toes off if you do paddle out, but the surf itself is a real struggle. We’ve got a long stretch of days with hardly any energy to speak of. The combined energy starts off really weak, just 42 at first, and it stays in the low double digits for several days. You’ll see a few small pulses swell up from the WSW and W, but they’re short period and weak. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross, which keeps the surface clean, but with waves barely cracking 2ft, it’s a flat spell.
We do get a bit of a bump on Thursday, August 27th, with the swell lifting to 4ft from the SSW, but the period stays short at 8 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 206, which is at least moderate. The problem is the wind goes cross-off and the sky brings a risk of thunderstorms. It’s not what you’d call good surf, just a bit more water moving around.
Then we hit the weekend of August 29th. The swell jumps up to 8ft from the W and WNW, with the combined energy peaking at a solid 816. That’s serious wave energy, but the wind is a nasty cross-onshore at 22 mph, making it lumpy and messy. This is one for the experts only, no question. And honestly, with that wind and the beach setup, it might be a better day for the kite crew than the paddle crew.
We get a brief window of cleaner conditions on the morning of Sunday, August 30th, with a light cross breeze and a 3ft swell from the W, but the period is a tiny 6 seconds, so it’ll be weak and crumbly. The afternoon picks up a little with 5ft from the SW and a cross-off wind, but it’s nothing to write home about.
The real standout, the only one that’s worth highlighting, comes on the morning of Sunday, September 6th. That’s over a week away, so a bit of a long-range hope, but it’s got the best combo we’ve seen. You’ll get a 5ft swell from the W with a 7-second period, and the wind is a fresh offshore from the SSE, blowing at 22 mph. That’s going to clean the waves right up, and the combined energy hits 336, which is solid. It’s a bit on the punchy side for beginners, but for the experienced crowd, that’s your session. The only downside is that September 6th is the start of the day, and the afternoon turns cross-off and a bit more clouded over, though still clean.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a washout, with small swells and messy onshore or cross-shore winds. The morning of Sunday, September 6th, is hands-down the best chance we get.
So, there you have it. A long wait for one decent clean window. Keep your eyes on that Sunday morning forecast. It’s not a classic run, but that one morning could make it all worthwhile.
Rusty.
