The Lowdown

Alright folks, let's get into it. We got a frustrating couple of weeks ahead, no two ways about it. There's swell on the way for sure, but the wind’s gonna be a real pain in the neck for most of this stretch.

The main problem is a ton of onshore and cross-onshore wind, especially through this first week. So even when there’s size, it’s going to be a lumpy, messy mess. You gotta pick your windows here, and pick them carefully.

Right now, today, Tuesday the 18th, it’s poor. We got 4ft of W swell but a cross-on breeze. Water’s a touch warmer than normal at 66°F, which is a bit of a silver lining, but the surf is just chopped out. Not much energy in it either, about weak.

Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are more of the same, poor. Thursday morning there’s a bigger pulse, 8ft from the WNW with a lot more juice (799), but it’s onshore and will be blown out. That’s a lot of water moving, but it’ll be a washing machine. Beginners need to stay well away.

The first real window is on the morning of Friday the 21st. It’s not big, 3ft from the W, but the wind finally turns light and offshore from the ENE. The conditions are clean, and there’s some moderate energy there at 195. That’s your shot for a clean, small session on the reefs. Just remember, this spot is only "fairly consistent," so you might be waiting a bit between sets.

That window closes by Friday afternoon, and the weekend, the 22nd and 23rd, is a write-off. We got short-period, weak swell and cross-onshore winds. Then from Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 26th, it’s tiny, mostly under 3ft. There’s a slight bump on Tuesday the 25th to 4ft from the W, but the wind is up, and it’s not great.

The clearest window we have in this whole stretch is the morning of Monday the 25th of August. Wait, I mean Tuesday the 25th. Sorry, getting my dates mixed. Tuesday the 25th morning has a 3ft W swell with a clean cross-off light breeze. It’s surfable, but not a big day.

After that, we wait. The end of the month, the 29th and 30th, sees a jump in size with 6ft on the 29th, but again, all onshore and ugly. Not worth it.

Now, looking into the second week, things might get a little more interesting, but still nothing’s a lock. Monday the 31st morning has 5ft from the W with a light cross-off breeze and clean conditions. That's got some size to it, and the energy is moderate at 261. It’s a long way off, but it could be a decent session. We’ll have to see.

The last day, Tuesday the 1st of September, has the biggest clean potential: a morning with 6ft W swell and a moderate cross-off breeze, with a solid energy reading of 449. But again, that’s a long way away, so don’t set your alarm yet.

So, the bottom line after this choppy mess: there are no real standouts here. If you’re keen, Friday morning (the 21st) is your best bet for a clean, smaller wave. The morning of the 31st might also be worth a look, but it’s got more size. But for a solid, clean day on the reefs, we’re looking at a blank run for a while. The wind is just going to kill it. Honestly, with these strong winds and the poor quality on the bigger days, I’d say the setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than the paddle surfers right now.

Keep watching the forecast. But as it stands, don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
