Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me be straight with you: the next 16 days are pretty bleak for a paddle at Perran Sands. We've got a long stretch with no real rideable surf on offer, so don't go getting your hopes up for any classic sessions just yet. It’s a proper dry spell for this part of the coast.
The first date we see anything close to surfable is Wednesday the 8th. Tuesday the 6th and the rest of Monday the 6th are a write-off. Wednesday morning on the 8th, we get a small pulse of swell at 2ft from the west, and the wind is glassy and clean. That's a rare bright spot, but the energy is weak at 90 – it’s tiny, gutless stuff. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about right. It's not going to be a day to remember, but if you’re desperate for a splash, that's your window.
After that, it's a long slog. From Wednesday afternoon all the way through to the weekend, the wind is messy or onshore, and the swell stays small with poor surf conditions. We go through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with nothing worth paddling out for. The energies are low, between 97 and 138 for the morning sessions, but the wind just kills it.
Then we hit another dry spell. From Sunday the 12th through to Saturday the 20th of July, there is absolutely nothing worthwhile. The swell is tiny, often below 2ft, period is short and weak, and although we get some clean-looking cross-off winds, the wave energy is atrocious – down to single digits or low teens on many days. That’s over a week of flat or close-to-flat conditions.
The best chance in this whole outlook comes right at the very end. On the 19th of July – a week and a half from now – we get a jump in quality. Around Sunday the 19th, the swell ticks up to 2ft from the west with a longer period of 13 seconds. That’s a proper little groundswell window. The winds are offshore from the ESE at 15 mph, which will clean things up nicely, and the energy climbs to 137 – still moderate but the most interesting we see in this whole period. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," so don't expect barrels, but it's the standout by a mile.
For a reef break like Peran Sands, that longer period groundswell coming from the west will give it shape and push. Because it's a fairly consistent spot, it’s worth a look that morning, especially with offshore wind. The water temp is around 61°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Don't bother with any of the days before that unless you just want to sit on a board and bob around. This is a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, the 19th is the only date I'd pencil in.
Rusty.
