The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook for Perran Sands is a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a long, long stretch of poor quality surf ahead. The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t show up until Thursday, the 3rd of September. Before that, it’s a real grind of onshore winds, messy conditions, and tiny waves. From the 20th of August right through to the morning of the 3rd of September, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a solid two-week gap where the wind and swell just aren’t lining up. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and even when the swell bumps up a bit, like on the 29th of August with a solid 12ft from the west, the wind is a nasty cross-onshore at 22 mph, making it lumpy and only for the hardcore (or the crazy).
So, what’s the one standout? It’s got to be Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the northwest, which is a good direction for this reef break here at Perran Sands. The water temp is currently a touch warmer than normal, sitting at 65°F, which is nice. The big clincher is the wind: it’s going to be glassy. Dead calm. That’s a winner. The swell period is a bit short, only 6 seconds, so it won’t be groundswell with bags of push behind it, but on a clean, glassy morning, that 6ft will still provide some fun, friendly waves for a beginner. The combined swell energy is moderate at 331.
Later that same day, Thursday afternoon, the swell bumps up to 7ft but the wind swings onshore from the northwest, so the morning is definitely the window. After that, Friday the 4th has a 4ft swell from the north with glassy conditions again in the morning, but the period is still short. It’s a decent option if you missed Thursday.
To be straight with you, this spot is fairly consistent for picking up swell, but the wind is the enemy here for most of this forecast. If you are a beginner, that 6ft glassy Thursday morning is right in your wheelhouse. Anything over 8ft that shows up later is only for experts, and with the poor wind, it’s not worth it.
Stay safe, check the tides, and keep an eye on that Thursday morning.
Rusty.
