The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I’m not gonna lie to you, this 16-day stretch for the breaks around here is a bit of a tough one to sell. The forecast period kicks off on the 16th of July, but there’s a real flat spell to start. The first few days are just not offering anything worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a solid gap of over a week with nothing but small, weak, and messy conditions. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s slightly above average.
The first real chance at anything rideable doesn’t show up until Saturday the 25th of July. The swell finally starts to show a bit of life, but it’s still a messy picture. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making it pretty choppy.
Perran Sands is really the only spot on the cards. It’s a fairly consistent reef setup that’s beginner-friendly, but the conditions are just not cooperating. The optimum swell is from the west, and we do see some pulses around the 25th and 26th, with swell heights hitting 4 ft from the W on the 25th morning, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 135 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is onshore, so it’s gonna be a messy, blown-out affair. Not the clean lines you’d want.
If there’s any standout, it’s the Saturday 25th. The swell is the biggest of the whole period, and the water temp is still a touch warmer than average. But it’s a real shame about the wind. The short period (6 seconds) means the waves will be a bit weak and sectiony, and the onshore breeze will chop it up. For a beginner spot, this is probably a bit too messy to be fun. For more experienced surfers, it’s a case of looking for the occasional clean face, but it’s not going to be the best session. The setup is a beach-and-reef mix, so with the strong winds and lumpy conditions, it’s looking more like a kite surfing day than a paddle surfing one.
From the 27th onwards, it winds down again. The swell drops back to under 3 ft, and the wind keeps swinging around, keeping things messy. The 30th of July brings a fresh pulse of energy from the WSW, hitting 3 ft with a combined energy of 145 (moderate), but again, the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy. It’s just not a clean run.
Bottom line: There’s no real magic window here. The best chance is on the 25th and 26th, but it’s a compromised swell. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t rearrange your schedule for this one.
Rusty.
