The Lowdown
Right then, let's be honest with you. The outlook for the next sixteen days out at Perran Sands is a bit of a tough sit. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat to tiny, poor-quality surf that’s just not worth paddling out for. The start of the period is a write-off, and it takes a good while before we see any change.
From Wednesday the 15th through to the end of July, the wave energy is just pathetic. You’re looking at combined energy figures barely scraping into the double digits, mainly between 19 and 96 (weak energy). The swell height sits at 1 ft to 4 ft for the first week, but with a messy mix of wind directions that keep it choppy, cross-shore, or onshore. Even the cleaner spells with a light cross-off wind from the ENE or NE can't save the fact there's almost no power in the water. The period is super short, mostly 4 to 9 seconds, meaning it's just wind slop with no push.
We do get a bit of a spike on Saturday the 25th of July. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the NNW, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits 276 (moderate wave energy). But it’s a total mess. The wind is onshore from the NW, making it lumpy and unknown quality. At 5 ft, it’s not huge, but with that onshore wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. This is really only for the desperate, and frankly, it's more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone with a paddle. For a beginner, this is too big given the conditions.
Really, the only half-decent window is the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell drops back to a tiny 1 ft, but it’s from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell pulse. The wind is light and onshore, but the energy is a bit better at 51 (weak energy). It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the cleanest, most organised wave in the whole outlook. After that, it’s back to the flat.
So, the honest truth is there’s nothing to get excited about here. The surf is poor, the energy is low, and the winds are rarely your friend. It’s a blank run that’s pretty normal for this area when the patterns set in like this. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
