Alright, grab a coffee and listen up.
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a look at the charts for Perran Sands, and I’ll be honest, it’s a bit of a tough watch for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, onshore slop for the most part. The water here is running at about 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, not that you’ll feel it much with this wind.
We’re going to sit through a rough patch to start. From Sunday the 5th right through to Tuesday the 8th, it’s mostly poor surf conditions. A tiny 2ft to 3ft from the west with a 9-second period isn’t going to do much, especially with the cross-onshore or onshore winds. You’d be fighting a losing battle.
Wednesday morning the 8th is our first little window. The wind swings around to the north and goes glassy. The swell is still tiny at 2ft from the west, but for a beginner, that’s actually a decent size to learn on. The combined energy is weak (88), so don’t expect much push. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Hang on through the rest of that week because it stays pretty junk. There’s a bit of a pulse showing up on Saturday the 11th, with the swell picking up to 6ft from the NNW. The problem is that period is short at 7 seconds, and a 19-22 mph north wind is going to make it a lumpy, cross-onshore mess. Combined energy is moderate to strong (387 to 527), but it’s all wind and chop.
Sunday the 12th might be the best of a bad bunch. The morning is cross-shore with a 6ft NNW swell (7 seconds), but the real highlight is the Sunday afternoon. The wind goes completely glassy with a 5ft swell from the NNW. That’s the cleanest it’s going to look in this whole run. It’s still a short-period beach break setup, so those waves will be a bit dumpy and quick, but if you just want to get wet and catch a few, that’s your window. The swell energy is moderate (225). Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have some company in that clean window.
After that, it gets messy again. The swell drops back to 3ft and smaller with mostly east or northeast winds ruining the shape. By Wednesday the 15th, we get a whisper of offshore wind from the SSE on the morning with a tiny 2ft west swell, but it’s so small you’d be struggling.
The only other time the swell pushes up over 5ft is Sunday the 19th into Monday the 20th, with a 7ft and 7ft west swell coming in. That’s expert territory size, but the wind is going to be cross, cross-on, or straight onshore, and during the 19th that cross-shore is showing a good 16 mph. It’s going to be a real mess and won't be much fun on a paddle board. That setup looks far more interesting for the kite surfing crew than for us.
Honestly, for the 16-day outlook, the standout is the glassy windows on the 8th and 12th. The 12th afternoon has the biggest, cleanest look. It’s not a world-class day, but it’s something to point your board at.
Stay stoked, and keep an eye on the sky.
Rusty.
