The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. We’ve got the full 16-day window ahead for Perran Sands, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough one. There’s a big, frustrating gap to start. The first sniff of any real surf is a long way off.
The first recommendation doesn’t come until Sunday, July 26th, and even then it’s compromised. That means a solid week of nothing good from the 19th all the way through to the 26th. For the first few days, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves mixed with onshore crap. The swell stays under 3 ft with periods of 5 seconds and combined energy barely reaching 46 (very weak). The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, chopping up whatever small bumps exist. Not worth paddling out for.
The wait ends on Sunday the 26th morning, but the wind is blowing straight onshore from the NW at 15 mph. The swell is a bit bigger, 5 ft from the west with a 6-second period, and the combined energy climbs to 206 (moderate). The afternoon sees the swell push to 6 ft and energy up to 316 (moderate). The problem is that onshore wind will make it a messy, lumpy mess. For a beginner reef break, 5 ft to 6 ft is on the upper edge of comfortable, but with that wind, it’s more of a washing machine than a wave. Honestly, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 27th keeps the swell around 6 ft from the WNW, with a period of 7 seconds and combined energy hitting 348 to 369 (moderate). The wind is still cross-onshore from the NNW at 15 to 19 mph. The size is pushing into experienced territory (over 5 ft), but the quality is poor. The waves will be lumpy and choppy. Not a day for a beginner.
Tuesday the 28th morning drops to 4 ft from the west, period 7 seconds, energy 255 (moderate). The wind is still cross-onshore from the north at 19 mph. Afternoon swells drop further to 3 ft from the west, period 9 seconds, energy 155 (moderate). The wind lightens slightly but stays cross-onshore.
Wednesday the 29th offers 2 ft from the west, period 10 seconds, energy 111 to 126 (moderate). The wind is cross-onshore in the morning, then onshore in the afternoon. The period is stretching out which means more energy, but the swell is small and the wind is working against it.
The water temperature is 65°F, which is a notable 4°F warmer than the long-term average for this time of year. That’s a rare treat to feel that warm water, but it won’t help the waves.
The best on offer in this whole outlook is a tough call, but I’d point to Thursday the 30th morning. The swell is only 2 ft from the west with a period of 9 seconds, but the combined energy is a weak 63. The wind is cross-onshore from the west at 9 mph, which is gentle. It’s not a standout, just the least messy option. The swell direction from the west is a decent match for the optimum swell direction, but the size is tiny. Expect gutless, small waves.
The rest of the run into the first few days of August sees more small, wind-affected waves. The swell direction isn’t favorable, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. It’s a long, bleak run for Perran Sands.
Rusty, signing off.
