The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you – this stretch is a pretty grim one. We’re looking at a long run of poor surf conditions, with a whole lot of days where you’ll be better off staying in bed or getting the fishing gear out. The first real day that’s worth paddling out doesn’t come until 4th September, and even that’s a bit of a mixed bag. So, we’re looking at a gap of nearly two weeks of mostly rubbish.
The only spot on the radar is Perran Sands, a reef set-up that’s fairly consistent but has been taking a beating from the wind. The water is sitting at 65°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing your toes off.
The early days, from 21st August through to the end of the month, are just a write-off. Strong cross-onshore winds, messy chop, and poor surf quality. The swell is there – you’ll see some size on the 27th and 28th with 6ft and 7ft from the west-northwest, but the wind is a disaster. That’s more of a kite session than a paddle, if you ask me. The energy is high, with values like 470 and 340 (moderate to strong), but it’s all blown out.
We get a bit of a tease on the 30th of August morning with a 6ft west swell and clean conditions, but the commentary says it’s marginal, so I wouldn’t get too excited. The wind is cross-off from the south-southwest, which is good, but the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’s not going to have much shape.
Now, the standout. The best chance of a decent wave comes on Friday morning, 4th September. The swell is 5ft from the west, with a 8 second period – nothing massive, but it’s a clean, workable size. The wind is light and cross-off from the south, giving us clean conditions. The combined energy is 296 (moderate). It’s not a world-beater, but after two weeks of dust, this is the one to aim for. The crowd factor is “sometimes” at Perran Sands, so you might bump into a few others, but it’s a reef break, so the waves should have a bit of line to them. Keep in mind the period is short, so it’ll be a bit soft and lumpy, but it’s the only window in the entire run that’s marked as “expect good surf conditions.”
After that, the 5th of September morning looks ordinary again, with light rain and cross-onshore wind, but the afternoon glass-off might give you a few small, clean waves on the 2ft swell.
Overall, it’s a bleak outlook. The first week is a total write-off, the second week has one decent morning and a couple of iffy windows. Don’t hold your breath for anything epic.
Rusty.
