The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on offer for Perran Sands over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, this is a tough one. The outlook is bleak for the next while. We’re looking at a solid run of small, weak surf with pretty ordinary winds. The first decent bit of energy doesn’t show up until July 25th, so there’s a big gap of over a week with nothing really worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a good 5° warmer than it should be for this time of year – that’s very unusual, a real warm patch.
The first sign of life comes on Saturday the 25th. The afternoon brings a jump in swell to 5ft from the west, with a moderate combined energy (556). The period hits 11 seconds, so it’s got a bit of push. The wind is a cross-onshore, though, so it’ll be a bit choppy. For a beginner-friendly reef like Perran Sands, this swell is manageable but not ideal because of the wind. It’s more of a look-and-see session.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Sunday the 26th. The morning has a solid 5ft west swell, with a period of 10 seconds and a decent combined energy of 354. The wind is a cross-shore, which is a lot better. It’s not glassy, but it’s a cleaner look than the day before. This is the best on offer, but it’s still not a classic. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have a few others with the same idea.
After that, it drops back off. The 27th and 28th have waist-high waves, but the wind switches around and the energy fades. Nothing to get excited about for the rest of the run.
There’s nothing here for beginners in the first week, and the only real window is for intermediates who are happy with a bit of chop. It’s been a quiet spell, and it looks like it’ll stay that way for a while.
Rusty.
