The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Perran Sands (reef) has got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a bit of a mixed bag, but there's a real window of opportunity if you're patient.
Right, the first few days are pretty quiet. Don't bother paddling out until the end of this week. We're talking tiny dribblers and clean conditions through the weekend, but the swell just isn't there. On Saturday the 22nd, there's a tiny 2ft West swell with a 10-second period and the combined energy is weak (96). Sunday and Monday look worse, with knee-high slop and strong winds. You'll get wet, but you won't catch much. Tuesday afternoon the 25th sees a small 2ft West swell with a clean, light offshore wind, which is tempting, but it's just not enough to get excited about.
Now, things start to liven up on Thursday the 27th. The morning brings a solid 10ft West swell, but it's short-period (8 seconds) and the winds are messy. The combined swell energy is massive (1331), so there's plenty of power, but the onshore wind is going to chop it up. This is one for the experienced lads only; the size is well over 8ft. It'll be a battle.
The real standout, the one I'm circling on the calendar, is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The afternoon session is the pick of the whole forecast. We've got a proper 8ft West swell with a nice 10-second period, a good amount of power behind it (combined energy of 1630), and the wind is clean, cross-off. That's the magic combo for this reef. This is what you wait for. It's big enough to be challenging, but with that cross-off breeze, it'll hold its shape beautifully. Expect a proper session, but the swell size means it's not for beginners.
There's also a big pulse for Thursday the 3rd of September with 10ft West swell and an 11-second period, giving heaps of energy (2423), but the winds are messy and the forecast confidence at that range is lower. It's a promising but less certain option.
A quick note on the water temp: it's about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual for Perran Sands.
So, to sum it up: a slow start, but don't get disheartened. Wait for that clean Wednesday afternoon (2nd September) session with the 8ft West swell. That's your window. The early morning on Thursday the 27th has size, but it's a messy beast. Keep an eye on that long-range Wednesday, it's the one.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
