Alright, let’s take a look at what’s on offer for Perran Sands. I’ll be honest – it’s a tough run ahead. This reef can handle some west swell, but the wind and wave quality just aren’t shaping up for a good paddle session for a long while.
From the get-go on Saturday the 4th of July, it’s a no-go. The water’s a touch warmer than normal at 62°, but that’s about it. We’ve got a cross-onshore breeze and poor surf, with moderate energy around 218. The swell is 3ft from the west, period 10 seconds, but it’s messy and not worth dragging the board out.
Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th? Same story. Little swells, onshore or cross-onshore winds, and poor conditions. Energy drops into double digits Monday afternoon – just 97 (weak). Not even a fun little wave to ride.
Tuesday the 7th of July morning goes glassy, which is a tease. The swell is only 2ft from the west at 9 seconds, with energy at 62 (weak). It’s clean, but there’s hardly enough water moving to stand up. Fine for a paddle, not for a ride.
Wednesday the 8th of July morning finally gives us something surfable, but it’s ordinary. Clean with a cross-offshore breeze from the east-northeast, but the swell stays tiny at 2ft from the west, period 9 seconds, energy at 86 (weak). You might catch a few closeouts, but don’t expect much.
From there, we go into a big gap. From Wednesday afternoon all the way through Saturday the 11th of July, it’s poor surf or onshore junk. Saturday afternoon sees a spike in energy to 208 (moderate) with 4ft from the north-northwest, but it’s a 6-second wind swell with a fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 mph. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean surf day – lumpy and choppy.
The rest of the second week stays flat or marginal. There’s a clean moment on Monday the 13th of July morning with 1ft from the west, period 8 seconds, and an offshore breeze from the east-southeast, but the wave height is laughable. Wednesday the 15th of July morning is another clean one with cross-offshore wind and 2ft of west swell, but again, you’re hunting for knee-high dribblers.
Then, on Friday the 17th of July afternoon, we finally see something with a bit of punch. Swell jumps to 6ft from the west at 8 seconds, with energy at 438 (strong). The problem? Onshore wind from the west-northwest at a gentle breeze. That’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. Not for beginners – over 5ft – and even experts might struggle with the chop. A better window for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
Overall, I’m struggling to find a single standout across the full 16 days. The best chance for a clean wave with a little shape might be Wednesday the 8th of July morning, but it’s tiny. After that, there’s a long blank run that lasts over a week until the 17th of July, and even that is messy. Not our finest stretch. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
