The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Perran Sands. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim stretch ahead for the next week and a half. We're looking at a real dry spell with no proper surf on offer until Tuesday the 25th of August, a solid seven-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The water’s currently sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 66°F, which is a bit of a silver lining, but not much else to get excited about.
For most of this period, we’ve got a messy cross-onshore wind messing up what little swell there is. The waves are small, choppy, and just plain ugly. On Thursday the 20th, there's a pulse of swell hitting a moderate combined energy of 640, but it's blown out by a fresh onshore wind. Honestly, with that much wind and lumpy conditions, this setup looks more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle folk. The 24th of August (Monday) gives us a brief moment of clean conditions with a light offshore wind, but the swell is tiny – barely 1.0ft to 2ft – so it’s a no-go.
Now, let’s talk about the only faint glimmer of hope. It arrives on Tuesday the 25th of August. We’ve got a 8ft swell pushing in from the west-southwest, with a moderate combined energy of 845. The wind is swinging around to the south-southeast, giving us a clean, cross-offshore breeze. This is the standout of the whole forecast. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a standard windswell, but the size and the clean conditions make it the one to aim for. It’s still a reef break, and with that size, it’s getting a bit much for the beginners, but for anyone else, that Tuesday morning window is the only real shot. Get on it.
After that, it fades fast. Wednesday the 26th sees the swell drop back to 3ft, and while the wind stays clean, the energy is weak. By Thursday the 27th, we get a glassy morning with a 5ft swell from the west-southwest, but the energy is still modest. We’re back to poor, choppy conditions by the weekend and into September. There's a tiny window on Saturday the 29th with zero wind and a glassy surface, but the swell is only 3ft and weak.
So there you have it. One decent day on the 25th, then a whole lot of nothing. It’s a tough run, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, wait for that Tuesday.
Rusty.
