Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s heading our way for the next couple of weeks at Perran Sands.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch to start. We’ve got a lot of small, messy swell and cross-onshore winds that just won’t let up. The first real sniff of anything half-decent doesn’t show up until Wednesday, July 8th. Wednesday morning, the wind shifts to a glassy NE 3 mph, and while the swell is only 2 ft from the west with a short 9-second period and weak energy (90), it’s clean and will give you something to ride. It’s not a standout by any means, but after a few days of nothing, you’ll take it.
The next little window is Friday, July 10th. The morning brings a light cross-offshore breeze and the swell pushes up a touch to 3 ft from the west. The energy climbs to a moderate 147, so there’s a bit more push. Conditions will be clean, and it’ll be surfable, but still nothing to write home about.
After that, the wind turns onshore again and the swell drops off for several days. From Saturday, July 11th through to Friday, July 17th, it’s mostly poor surf with choppy conditions, small waves, and not much to get excited about. Don’t bother checking in during that stretch.
Now, Saturday, July 18th starts to get interesting. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the WNW, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore 19 mph. The combined energy hits 194, so there’s power, but it’s going to be lumpy and messy. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
The real standout in this whole 16-day window lands on Sunday, July 19th. The morning sees a solid 7 ft swell from the NW, with a very strong combined energy of 515. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it’s more windswell than groundswell, and the wind is still cross-onshore. This is big for the area – over 8 ft in some pulses – so it’s strictly for experienced surfers only. Expect powerful, chunky waves with a lot of water moving. The rest of that day stays big and messy.
By Monday, July 20th, things drop back to 4 ft with moderate energy (158), but still cross-onshore, so conditions remain rough. Tuesday, July 21st keeps the same story: 5 ft from the west, strong cross-onshore wind, and bumpy surf.
So, to sum it up: if you’re going to pick a day, Wednesday, July 8th morning is your best bet for small, clean waves. The only true standout for size and power is Sunday, July 19th, but that’s for the experienced crew only and you’ll want to pick your spot. For most of this run, the wind just isn’t playing ball.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts, and I’ll catch you down the beach.
