The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Perran Sands are a tough watch. The finder is giving us a zero across the board, every single day, and that’s a full 16-day blank. Nothing to get excited about at all. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a proper dry spell. It happens, but it doesn’t mean it’s staying like this forever – forecasts can flick around.
The only time the ocean even looks like it’s trying is right at the end of the run. On the morning of Saturday, July 26, the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the west, with 8-second period and combined energy of 372 (moderate). That’s the biggest wave height we see. But the wind is a fresh onshore from the NW, blowing at 19 mph, and the conditions are described as “unknown” – not a good sign. It’s a reef break, so it might hold shape, but with that wind, it’s going to be messy and lumpy. Not a standout.
The following Monday, July 27, sees swell hitting 7 ft from the west, 8-second period, and energy at 520 (strong). That’s a solid size, but again, the wind is cross-shore from the WSW at 9 mph in the morning, picking up to a fresh 19 mph from the SW in the afternoon. It’s a gentle cross-chop first up, then lumpy. For a beginner-friendly reef, 7 ft is pushing into expert territory, and with that wind chop, it’s going to be a battle. Not a session for the faint-hearted.
The best conditions in terms of wind come right at the start, but there’s barely any swell. On Tuesday, July 14, we’ve got a 2 ft, 6-second wave from the north with a cross-off breeze from the ENE at 12 mph, energy only 84 (weak). It’s clean, but it’s not really surf. The same goes for Friday, July 17 morning – glassy conditions with a 2 ft, 6-second north swell, but it’s still rated poor.
Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The only flicker of hope is the 26th and 27th, but the wind and chop will ruin it. If you’re a kite surfer, that 27th with strong cross-shore winds and lumpy 7 ft surf might look interesting, but for a paddle, it’s a no-go.
Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
Keep the board waxed, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
