The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Perran Sands over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, for the first ten days, it’s a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of really weak, small waves and poor conditions. Nothing worth paddling out for until we get past the 24th of July. The water is a balmy 65°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re sitting there waiting.
The first real glimmer comes on the morning of Friday the 24th. It’s only a small 3ft swell from the WNW, but with a period of 12 seconds, it’s got some groundswell energy behind it. The combined energy is moderate at 271. The real kicker is the wind: glassy, dead calm. That’s going to make it look absolutely perfect, even if the size is modest. This is a reef break, so that longer period swell will line up nicely, and it’s only a beginner-level wave, so it’s a great session for anyone getting into it. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
After that, the real standout is the morning of Sunday the 26th. The swell picks up to 6ft from the west, which is on the bigger side for beginners, but the wind is a gentle offshore from the SE, keeping it clean. The energy is strong at 389, and with a 7-second period it’ll be a bit more crumbly and fun for a wider range of surfers. It’s a good solid option.
But the best of the whole outlook is the morning of Monday the 27th. We’re looking at a decent 8ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds, pumping a very strong 828 units of combined energy. That’s serious wave energy. This is for experts only at that size. The light breeze from the NE keeps it cross-off and clean. This is a proper session for anyone who knows what they’re doing. It’s a shallow reef, so treat it with respect. Crowds are likely.
So, in short: the first week and a half is a flat spell. The 24th offers a small, clean, glassy morning for the beginners. The 26th is a solid, clean option for most. And the 27th is the big one – a powerful, clean, west swell that will have the experts buzzing. After that, it looks like it drops off again.
