The Lowdown
Right, surfer, Rusty here. Let's get stuck into the next fortnight for our corner of the coast, just you and the sea.
We’re looking at a bit of a slow burn to kick things off, with a proper pulse of energy arriving about a week out, and then a real gem of a session to look forward to on the horizon. The first few days are nothing to write home about—small, weak, and a bit average. But hang in there, because the end of the month and start of September has some serious potential.
The standout session by a mile is the morning of Monday, 31st August at Perran Sands. It’s early, but the stars align. We’ve got a neat 5ft swell rolling in from the west, with an 8-second period. The moderate wave energy of 270 is enough to give it some push. But the real magic is the wind: glassy. Absolutely flat, clean conditions. That means no bump, no chop, just you and the lines. The water is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 65°F, which is nice. This is a beginner-friendly reef, so the size and conditions will be very user-friendly. Keep in mind, it does get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
Before that, the run-up is a mixed bag. The morning of Saturday, 22nd August has a tiny 2ft west swell and a gentle cross-off breeze, but the combined energy is only 104, so it’s meek. Tuesday afternoon, 25th August, shows a 2ft west swell with clean offshore wind, but again, it’s very small. The real pulse hits on the morning of Friday, 28th August, when the swell jumps to 7ft from the west, but that’s a no-go—the period is a jumbled 7 seconds and the wind is onshore, creating a messy cross-chop and energy (418). That morning is for experienced crew only, if anyone. The swell builds to 10ft that afternoon with 922 units of energy, but the wind is onshore and strong—frankly, that looks more interesting for kiteboarders than paddle surfing.
We then get a bit of a gap in the quality until the true gem on the 31st. After that, the first week of September has another good look. The morning of Friday, 4th September will be rewarding. The swell drops back to 4ft from the west, but the wind is glassy again, the period stretches to 9 seconds, and the energy is a solid 406. It’s another clean, user-friendly morning. That afternoon sees a 4ft swell from the WNW with a long 12-second period and 459 energy, also glassy. With a period that long, a reef break like Perran Sands will hold it together nicely, giving proper, lined-up waves.
Heading into the second week, the outlook is thinner. Saturday, 5th September has a 3ft WNW swell but the wind is a 35 mph offshore blast. That’s clean, yes, but it’ll be hard work paddling into such a small wave in that much wind. After that, Sunday, 6th September and beyond, it looks very small and choppy, with the wind turning onshore again.
So, in short: get your board ready for Monday the 31st of August morning, and maybe circle Friday the 4th of September as a backup. The rest of the time, the bank looks quiet.
Rusty.
