The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Perran Sands in feet and miles per hour. Same story – a stinker of a 16-day forecast. No good surf options anywhere in this window. The only flicker of hope is on Tuesday the 21st morning when you get a clean 3 ft wave from the NNW with a light 3 mph east breeze – but even that is described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” So really, don’t get your hopes up.
Perran Sands is a fairly consistent reef break, good for beginners, loves a west swell and a SE offshore wind. But almost every day the wind is blowing cross-on from the north or north-west, and when it’s clean the waves are ankle-biters. Water temp is 64°F, a touch warmer than average for July (about 3°F above normal).
Here’s the rundown: from Friday 17th July it’s tiny – 1 ft west swell with a short 8 sec period, light cross-on wind. Saturday 18th sees 4 ft waves but from the north at a miserable 5 sec period, with a fresh 19 mph cross-on – lumpy and useless. Sunday 19th morning is clean but only 2 ft. Monday 20th is back to tiny and choppy.
Tuesday 21st morning is the one clean slot: 3 ft NNW, 6 sec, combined energy 76 – maybe you can catch a few if you’re desperate, but the afternoon goes choppy again.
From Wednesday 22nd through the end of July, you get a few days with moderate energy – like Tuesday 28th afternoon when combined energy hits 132 – but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-on and the sea is messy. That’s kite surf territory, not paddle. Swell heights inch up to 4 ft at best, but always with lousy wind.
The last days of July and first of August are all 1–1 ft slop with cross-on breeze. For a break that’s fairly consistent, this flat, windy spell is unusual. Stay patient – forecasts can turn around.
