The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest with you, it’s a bit of a grim spell for Perran Sands. The pattern is mostly cross-onshore wind and small, wind-affected swell, with a few rays of hope tucked away near the end.
We kick off the first recommendation on the 18th of July, but it’s not one to get excited about. Saturday morning has a weak 2 ft north-northwest swell, with a short period of 4 seconds and a moderate cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy of all swells is a measly 37, so it’s weak. The water is sitting at 64°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The condition is poor, so it’s a washout.
The next glimmer comes on the 21st of July, Tuesday morning. There’s a tiny 3 ft northwest swell, but the wind flips to a light cross-offshore breeze from the east-southeast, and the water goes clean. The combined energy is still weak at 76. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The rest of that week just slides back into choppy, cross-onshore slop, with the swell occasionally bumping up to 4 ft but ruined by the wind. The 23rd and 24th of July are particularly poor, with the swell dropping to just 0.3 ft.
The next real standout is a long way off, on the 30th of July, Thursday. This one is promising but a bit uncertain. The swell picks up to 7 ft from the west-northwest with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 494 – that’s moderate. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the south at 15 mph. It’s rated as marginal due to possible tide issues, but the conditions are clean. That’s a fair bit of power for the reef, and with that offshore wind, it could be a nice wave. It’s a bit big for beginners at over 5 ft, but the more experienced crew will be eyeing it up.
Between the 21st and that 30th, there’s a long gap of about nine days with nothing really worth chasing. The 2nd of August, Sunday morning, offers a last gasp with a tiny 2 ft west-northwest swell and clean cross-offshore wind, but the energy is only 59. It’s a poor end to the window.
For the best on offer, it has to be that Thursday the 30th of July. The 7 ft west-northwest swell with that clean cross-offshore wind at Perran Sands is the only real window of quality. The rest of the period is largely a write-off, so keep your eyes on that date and hope the forecast holds.
