Table - best surf conditions forecast for Penhale over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, and it’s been a tough stretch for the North Cornwall coast recently. We’ve had basically dead flat ocean and grim winds, and to be honest the entire 16-day window at Penhale is a real struggle. There’s a massive gap of surf-starved days at the start with no recommendation; a surfer would be better off tuning up their wetsuit zips than paddling out for the first four days.
The first whisper of something surfable creeps in Thursday 09 July morning with a small clean wave. The swell is 3 ft from the WNW and period is 10 seconds. For Penhale, optimum swell direction is W. That isn’t perfect but close enough to produce a ride. What makes the morning really promising is the NNE wind at a light 6 mph coming off the land. The water temp is 61°F, which is about normal for this time of year – no drama there.
There’s not much in it, though. The combined wave energy is only 126 (moderate energy) so it won’t punch hard. But straight up, Thursday morning is the best of a bad bunch here; the conditions are clean, which is a major plus. Even though the swell size won’t scare anybody, it’s properly surfable and that’s all we’ve got.
The rest of the run is a mess. Friday 10 July morning is clean again with a light NE breeze, and the same small 3 ft WNW swell gives a rideable wave (combined energy 138). Same goes for Saturday 11 July morning – clean, 2 ft from the W, period 10 seconds – but still tiny and gutless. Those are the only other mornings that nearly work, but they are still pretty ordinary. After that it all goes to absolute rubbish: anywhere from raw flat spells on Sunday and Monday, to cracking offshore winds that blow too hard for a board to even sit in the water, or the wind swings completely onshore again.
Honestly, if you're desperate and chalk it up as a long range promise that fell apart, look at Thursday 09 July morning. The rest you can skip. For a spot that’s fairly exposed to swell, this is a sad few weeks.
Stay tuned because forecasts change – they always do. If you miss it, there’s nothing else on the horizon worth paddling for in this window.
