The Lowdown
Alright, let's be real. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and weak for Newport Beach. There’s a long stretch of nothing here, so don't be in a rush. The water is warm, around 72°F, which is a couple degrees above average for this time of year. That's a nice touch for a swim, but the surf is a letdown.
The first real sign of life shows up on August 29th. The energy jumps up to 561, which is a moderate bump from the weak stuff we've been seeing. The swell's coming from the SSW, and we might see some chest-high waves. The period is a long 17 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. That long period means it’s clean and powerful, but at a river break like this, it can be a little too straight and not as organized. It’s still the best we’ve got.
The next day, the 30th, still looks like the standout. The swell is around 3ft from the SSW, with a 16-second period. The morning conditions look glassy with a light breeze, and the energy is still strong at 554. It’s a small, clean window. If you’re a goofy-footer, you might find a little left. This is the one to keep an eye on.
After that, the end of the month into September 1st still has some SSW energy, around 3ft, but the winds start to become more cross-onshore, which will chop it up. The quality drops off again.
So, to sum it up: there’s a whole lot of nothing for the next two weeks, then a little pulse of energy at the very end of the month. It’s promising, but it’s a long-range call, so don't get too excited yet. This is a river break that’s fairly consistent, but this forecast is a lean one. Sometimes you just gotta wait it out. That late-month pulse is the only thing that looks like it might give you a few proper waves.
That's all from me. Stay patient.
Rusty.
