Table - best surf conditions forecast for Newport Beach over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of "poor surf conditions" from Thursday the 9th right through to the 18th, with barely a wave worth mentioning. The spot is Newport Beach, a river mouth setup that’s sheltered from most swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The only flicker of life comes on Wednesday morning, the 15th of July. The wind goes glassy, and the waves are technically surfable, but it’s ordinary – just 2ft of weak, short-period W swell (242 energy). It’s clean, but you’ll be scratching for a ride. Not a standout by any stretch.
After that, the surf goes dead again until Saturday the 18th. The morning brings a jump to 4ft of S swell, period 16 seconds, with 1218 energy – that’s a moderate groundswell. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit messy, but this is the closest we get to a real option. By the afternoon, the swell hits 5ft, but the wind picks up to a gentle breeze, making it choppy. This is a bit much for beginners, but for experienced surfers, it’s the best on offer. The swell direction (S) matches the optimum (SSW) pretty well, and the long period (16 seconds) means it’ll have some shape, but at a river mouth, it might break a bit straight. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Sunday the 19th still has some size – 6ft in the morning – but the wind stays cross-onshore, and the energy drops to 1024. It’s marginal, not great. After that, from Monday the 20th onward, we’re back to tiny, weak swell (2ft to 3ft) with poor conditions. The 23rd and 24th show a little bump in energy (736 to 919) but still with onshore winds, so it’s not worth getting excited about.
Honestly, if you’re desperate, aim for the 18th and 19th – that’s your best chance. The rest of the 16 days is a washout. For kite surfers, the consistent cross-onshore winds and small waves might be more fun than paddling.
Rusty.
