The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer for Newport Beach.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half looks pretty flat and frustrating. We’re looking at waist-high dribble or less for most of it, and the winds are almost always messing things up with a cross-onshore or onshore breeze. Don't get your hopes up for the first ten days, it's a lean run.
There is a glimmer of hope if you are willing to wait. Starting around Wednesday the 4th of September into the first weekend of September, the swell machine finally wakes up. We see a nice SSE swell building, with a period of 15 seconds – that's proper groundswell energy. The wave energy jumps into the strong category (1366 on Friday morning, climbing to 1573 Friday afternoon). That's a promising pulse.
However, it's not a clean-cut winner. The wind on Friday the 4th is breezy from the S, which will put a chop on the face. The real standout looks to be the morning of Saturday, the 5th of September. We’ve got a solid 1.9m (6.2 ft) swell from the S, with a moderate 14-second period, and the wind is looking light and offshore from the SSW. That’s the kind of setup that will make you paddle out. The wave energy is very strong (1789), so there will be some grunt in the water. At that size, this is expert territory; the waves will have some punch. The water temp is sitting around a balmy 21° (70°), which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
For the first break we mention, water temps at Newport Beach are about a degree and a half warmer than usual, so you'll be comfortable in a spring suit or even just trunks on the warmer days.
The only real call to make is on that Saturday morning. Newport Beach is a river break, and with a longer-period swell from the south, it should wrap in reasonably well. The light offshore will be the secret ingredient. It’s a beginner-friendly spot at smaller sizes, but at 1.9m (6.2 ft) and with that energy, this is for the experienced crew only. Because the crowds are "often" here, expect company even on a so-so day, so when the waves are good it will be busy.
The rest of the window? Not worth paddling for. The first ten days are a wipeout.
