The Lowdown
Alright, listen up, Newport Beach crew. Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet for this river mouth. It's not a total write-off, but patience is the name of the game.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, it's lean. The waves are small, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is constantly putting a bump on the face. A lot of cross-onshore chop making it messy. The combined swell energy is pretty weak, mostly in the low hundreds (213 to 444), which tells you there's just not much juice in the water. The water temp is sitting at 70°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can at least be comfortable waiting.
We hit a bit of a lull, but then things start to stir around Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell picks up a little, hitting about 4ft from the S, with the energy climbing into the 700s (740). It's still a bit of a cross-on mess, but it's a step up. The news gets better as we roll into the first week of September.
The real standout, the one to circle on your calendar, is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. We've got a 3ft swell rolling in from the SSW, with a long period of 18 seconds. That's proper groundswell, meaning it'll have some good shape. But the kicker is the wind. It's glassy. That's a rare treat, and it means the river mouth will be clean and smooth. The combined energy hits 785 – moderate, but all that energy is well-organized. The swell direction is also a perfect match for the optimum direction here. This is by far the best session on offer, even if the size is on the small side. It's a beginner-friendly height, so get out there.
The rest of the 16-day window after that is a bit of a mixed bag, with conditions turning marginal again. So, really, you’ve got a long quiet spell, then a small window of hope, and that one glistening Friday morning.
Rusty.
