The Lowdown
Alright, g'day, this is Rusty comin' at ya with the outlook for Moruya Rivermouth. Let’s get into it.
First off, the water temp here is sitting right about where you’d expect for late winter, nothin' weird going on there.
The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, honestly. We're starting off real quiet. The first week has some waves, but they're mostly small and pretty ordinary. You'll see some waves around 1 to 2 feet over the first weekend, but the wind is all over the shop, and the combined energy is weak (only 16 to 16). It ain't worth paddling out for.
We get a bit of a lift in the second half of the first week, around Wednesday August 26th. The morning is still just "ordinary," but by the Wednesday afternoon, things start to look up. There's a clean 4-foot swell coming from the ENE, with a moderate combined energy of 225 and an 8-second period. The wind goes light offshore from the SSW, so it should be clean. That's a decent little session.
Thursday August 27th is glassy in the morning with a 3-foot ENE swell, but the energy is a bit weaker. Friday August 28th is a standout in this first stretch – the morning is glassy with a 4-foot ENE swell and a 9-second period, and the combined energy is back up to a solid 225. That is your best bet for a clean, fun surf in the first week at the river mouth.
We hit a dry patch after that with a few "poor" days in a row. Then, Tuesday, September 1st brings a jump in size – a 6-foot S swell, but it’s a cross-shore wind with light ripples and the energy is huge at 583. It’s marginal, though. This one might be a bit unruly for a river mouth.
Now, the real standout for the whole outlook is Friday morning, September 4th. Holy moly, this one looks the goods. The forecast shows 7 feet of S swell, and the combined energy is a massive 966. That's strong, powerful stuff. But the best part? The wind is glassy from the NW. It will be clean. For a river mouth, a long-period S swell from the optimum direction can really line it up. This is a morning for the more experienced crew, as 7 feet at a river mouth can be a bit much for a beginner, but for anyone else, it's a session to mark on the calendar. It’s over a week away, so keep your fingers crossed, but it’s got all the makings of a cracker.
The rest of the second week is a letdown after that, with onshore or cross-shore winds and smaller, gutless energy.
So, to sum it up: if you want a quick wave in the first week, hit Friday morning, August 28th. But the one to get excited about is Friday morning, September 4th – that’s the one where it all comes together.
Rusty.
