The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up at the Moruya Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
First off, it’s a slow burner. The early days are flat and ugly – onshore and cross-shore winds, tiny waves, and no reason to get wet. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate (125 to 195), and the conditions are poor. Don’t even think about it until Thursday the 27th of August morning. That morning the swell is only 2ft from the NE, but the wind goes glassy, and it’s the first time you can actually surf something. Still, it’s ordinary – just a clean-up in the morning before the wind turns bad again.
The standout is Sunday the 30th of August morning. The swell builds to 4ft out of the S, period around 9 seconds, and it’s glassy – perfect. Combined energy hits 300, which is moderate wave energy, and the waves are actually good. That’s your best session by far. The Rivermouth is exposed to the S/SE swell, and with offshore being W, it’ll be clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes – and on a morning like that, you’ll have company.
After that, Monday the 31st morning is surfable but ordinary with 3ft and glassy conditions. Into the first week of September, we get offshore wind on Tuesday the 1st – W wind at 12 mph in the arvo, with a 2ft SSE swell and 12-second period. Clean waves, but small. Still worth a look if you’re keen. The rest of the first week and into the second week is mostly poor – small swell, cross-on or onshore wind, and combined energy dropping to 55 to 127. By Monday the 7th of September, it’s back to 4ft from the NE with a short 6-second period and cross-on wind – messy.
So bottom line: don’t waste your time until Sunday the 30th of August morning – that’s your standout, glassy and clean. After that, there’s a tiny window on the 1st of September with offshore wind, but it’s small. The rest is flat or messy. Crowds are possible on that Sunday, so be early.
Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing special.
Rusty.
