The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf on offer at the Moruya Rivermouth (river) across the next couple of weeks. No huge swells, but plenty of clean, workable waves if you pick your moments. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real standout kicks off early on Sunday morning, July 19. The Rivermouth is looking glassy with a light NNW breeze at 5 km/h, and a clean 4ft ENE swell rolling in with a solid 12-second period. This is groundswell, so you’ll get proper waves with good shape and energy, and the combined energy is moderate at 451. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and Sunday morning is the pick of the opening days – clean, glassy, and the Rivermouth’s exposed position lines up nicely with that optimum SE swell direction. The tides might be a bit touchy later, but the morning session is gold.
Sunday afternoon and Monday (July 19-20) see a slight bump up to 5-6ft, but the wind turns cross-on, so it gets a bit messy. Still surfable, but not as polished. Tuesday, July 21, brings back the glass: morning has zero wind, clear skies, and 4ft ENE swell at 10 seconds. Combined energy is 379 – moderate again. The Rivermouth will be clean and fun, especially for a beginner session. Tuesday afternoon stays glassy with a light ENE breeze.
Wednesday, July 22, is offshore with a WNW breeze at 10 km/h, giving you clean 4ft waves in the morning. The swell drops a bit, but the quality is there. Wednesday afternoon gets smaller at 3ft, but still clean. Then Thursday morning, July 23, sees a shift: a 6ft S swell with a short 7-second period, but cross-off wind from the SW at 10 km/h keeps it clean. The short period means a bit less push, but the Rivermouth handles it. Thursday afternoon turns poor with onshore wind.
Friday, July 24, is small and ordinary – 3ft S swell in the morning, clean, but nothing special. The rest of that weekend (July 25-26) stays small, with 2-3ft SSE swells and periods around 10-12 seconds. The morning of Saturday, July 25, is glassy, so if you’re desperate, you could get a few tiny ones. But overall, a gap of ordinary surf from Thursday afternoon through to Monday morning, July 27.
Now, here’s the next standout: Wednesday morning, July 29. Late in the forecast period, but worth marking. The Rivermouth gets a 6ft S swell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1186 – moderate-strong. Cross-off wind from the NNW at 15 km/h keeps it clean. This is a proper pulse, but it’s over a week away, so treat it as a promising call. The morning looks best; the afternoon drops to 4ft and gets windier.
The end of the first week of August (July 31 to August 3) is a mixed bag. Friday, July 31, has a 5-6ft SSE swell with fresh breeze, so it’s clean but windy. Saturday, August 1, sees an 8ft S swell (over 8ft – experts only) with moderate cross-off wind, combined energy at 2058 – strong. This is a big one, but the Rivermouth might be a handful for anyone but experienced surfers. Sunday and Monday ease off, with Monday morning, August 3, glassy again at 3ft SE swell.
Overall, the best bets are Sunday morning July 19 and Tuesday morning July 21 for clean, glassy conditions on a moderate swell, and Wednesday morning July 29 for a bigger, clean pulse if you can wait. The Rivermouth is fairly consistent, so don’t stress the gaps – the forecasts can change, and this spot often delivers.
Rusty.
