Table - best surf conditions forecast for Moruya Rivermouth over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been reading this stretch of coast like a familiar face. Let’s not waste time – there is surf on the way, but you’ll need to be patient through a flat, frustrating gap right at the start. The first proper wave worth paddling out for doesn’t arrive until Thursday morning, July 9th.
Before that, Wednesday 8th July is a write-off: 5 ft of lumpy SE swell with a cross-onshore breeze and a weak combined energy of 828 – just messy, with questionable tide. Leave the board in the car.
Thursday morning July 9th is where it turns. Moruya Rivermouth (Moruya-Rivermouth) will see clean lines with a 4 ft ESE swell, period of 11 seconds, and a light cross-off breeze from the SW. That’s proper groundswell energy – 539 on the combined energy scale – offering good shape but with those longer gaps between sets. The water sits at 63°, about average for this time of year. It’s the standout of the first week: clean, glassy in the afternoon when the wind drops to glassy conditions at 5 ft from the SE, period 9 seconds. That Thursday arvo session will be worth a late paddle.
Friday morning July 10th keeps the goods: glassy conditions again, 5 ft SE swell, 9-second period, and light NW wind – combined energy at 369. It’s mellow, clean, and forgiving for beginners. But Friday afternoon turns junky with cross-on wind and energy dropping to 286 – not worth it.
Saturday 11th is small – 3 ft SE swell with a short 8-second period and combined energy of just 178. The morning is clean but ordinary. Saturday arvo gets messy with 12 mph winds. Then from Sunday 12th through to Wednesday 15th morning, the surf drops away to tiny 0.7 ft to 2 ft dribble – combined energy as low as 6 to 86. That’s nearly five days of barely surfable slop. Shortboarders might be tempted by the offshore winds but it’s just too small.
Wednesday arvo July 15th sees a sudden spike to 6 ft from the south, but it’s short-period (6 seconds), cross-onshore, and combined energy of 254 – more like a washing machine than waves. Thursday and Friday 16th–17th stay lumpy with onshore wind and energy between 257 and 577, but the quality is poor or marginal.
Then comes the true standout of the whole outlook. Saturday morning July 18th: 6 ft SSE swell, 8-second period, cross-off breeze from the SW, combined energy of 415 – clean, punchy, and fun. But the real gem is Sunday morning July 19th: 6 ft SE groundswell with a 10-second period, light cross-off wind, combined energy of 744. That’s proper, with good shape and clean faces. Sunday arvo goes glassy at 5 ft – combined energy 705 – and then Monday morning July 20th is dead glass: 6 ft SE swell, 11-second period, no wind at all, combined energy 676. That’s the pick of the whole run – a dream session for the Rivermouth. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
After Monday arvo, the swell slowly fades through Tuesday and Wednesday 21st–22nd, with 4 ft dropping to 2 ft, and a long-period 12-second groundswell on Wednesday morning that’s clean but small (combined energy 166). By Thursday 23rd it’s tiny again – 2 ft ESE, combined energy 113 – and not worth the drive.
Bottom line: the best sessions are Thursday 9th morning, Sunday 19th morning, and Monday 20th morning. The swell direction stays mostly SE, matching the optimum for the Rivermouth, and the winds turn clean and offshore during those windows. Don’t bother paddling out in the flat mid-week gap unless you’re desperate.
Rusty.
