G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for the South Coast. Look, we’ve got a solid run of surf kicking off right away, but the standout is a bit of a moving target. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 64°, which is a nice little bonus for the crew.
The first real action hits Monday morning, the 6th of July. Moruya Rivermouth is the only break on the radar, and it’s serving up a solid 8ft of SSE swell, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell, but with 8ft, it’s already pushing into the too-big-for-beginners zone. The combined wave energy is pumping at 1809, which is strong. The wind is a cross-off from the SSW at 9 mph, keeping it clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but the crowd factor is a “sometimes” thing, so you might have some company. For the morning, this is the pick – a proper, powerful river mouth wave.
The pattern shifts a bit from there. Tuesday morning, the 7th, is still good with 7ft from the SE and a cross-off wind, but it’s not quite the standout. Wednesday morning, the 8th, drops to 7ft but with a glassy SW wind at only 3 mph – that’s clean, clean surf. The energy is still moderate at 936.
Thursday morning the 9th sees the swell drop to 4ft but the period stretches to 11 seconds, a nice long-period groundswell from the ESE. Light WSW wind at 3 mph keeps it clean. Friday morning the 10th is the real hidden gem: 5ft of SE swell, but the wind is glassy, absolutely glassy, from the W at 3 mph. The energy is 431, not huge, but for a tidy, clean wave on a river mouth, that’s magic. That’s the best session of the first week for the average surfer.
Then we hit a big gap. From Saturday the 11th, the surf drops off fast. Saturday morning is 3ft, and by Sunday the 12th it’s 2ft with a fresh 19 mph NW wind. The rest of that week and into the next is a write-off – tiny, weak swells, with the combined energy dropping to single digits on the 13th. There’s basically nothing worth paddling out for from the afternoon of the 11th all the way through to the 16th.
Now, here’s the long-range wildcard. Friday morning, the 17th of July – that’s over a week away – the models are showing a big 10ft S swell with a 12-second period. The energy is massive at 4081. The wind is glassy, dead calm. But here’s the catch: 10ft is way too big for this break, and the file says it’s predicted to be too big for this spot. This is an expert-only session, and even then, it’s a caveat. The afternoon of the 17th drops to 8ft with an onshore wind, so it’s messy. After that, it’s back to poor surf through to the 21st.
So, the bottom line: your best bet is Friday morning, the 10th of July, for the clean, glassy 5ft SE swell. The Monday morning the 6th offers the biggest wave for the experienced crew. The 17th is a promise of a big swell, but it’s a long way off and too big for most.
Rusty.
