The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a mixed bag ahead over the next couple of weeks. The first real standout is Wednesday morning (15 July) at Moruya Rivermouth, with a solid 6ft swell from the south, period sitting at 8 seconds. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW at 3 mph, so that river mouth setup should be peeling cleanly. The combined energy reading is 528 – that’s moderate but punchy, and with the river mouth handling the S swell nicely, it’s the best peak of the early window. Water temperature is running about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
After that, the surf drops right off. Thursday morning (16 July) sees 3ft and a WSW wind, but the energy is down to 191 and the quality is ordinary. From Thursday afternoon all the way through to Saturday afternoon (18 July), we’re looking at tiny knee-high slop, mostly under 2ft, with weak energy readings around 50 to 60. There’s a pretty big gap of very poor to no surf here for several days.
Then Sunday morning (19 July) brings a shift. A new ENE groundswell shows up at 4ft with an 11-second period, combined energy at 370, and a cross-off NW wind at 6 mph. That’s clean and the longer period means shape should improve – it’s a point break sort of setup, so the river mouth will groove nicely. Monday morning (20 July) is the standout of this second pulse: 5ft from the ENE, 10-second period, energy up to 614, and a NNW cross-off breeze at 6 mph. That’s the best size and power of the whole run, and it’s glassy clean. The afternoon gets choppy with a NE wind picking up to 12 mph, so hit the dawn session.
Tuesday morning (21 July) is still good – 5ft, glassy with a WNW wind, energy at 460. Wednesday morning (22 July) also glassy with 4ft (energy 294). Thursday morning (23 July) has a clean offshore W wind at 3 mph, 4ft, energy 238. Friday morning (24 July) is dead calm – 3ft, glassy, energy 232. That whole stretch from Sunday through to Friday morning is consistently surfable, with the Monday morning being the absolute pick.
From Saturday (25 July) onward, the energy tails off quickly. The 3ft and 3ft days are ordinary, with the only decent session being Monday morning (27 July) – a new SSW swell at 4ft, 10-second period, energy 338, and glassy conditions. After that, Tuesday morning (28 July) is rideable with 3ft and a cross-off SW wind, but the energy is down to 208. The final decent window is Thursday morning (30 July) – 4ft from the SE, 8-second period, glassy calm, energy 305. It’s a reasonable finish, but nothing compared to that Monday morning peak.
Overall, the first week’s best is the 20 July morning session – that’s the one to circle. The river mouth is fairly consistent, so it tends to hold up, and crowds are only sometimes an issue, but on a clean 5ft morning, expect a few others to have the same idea. No major standout on the second week, but that Monday 27 July glassy morning is worth a paddle.
Rusty.
