Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the Moruya Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
We’re in for a mixed bag, starting off pretty quiet. There’s nothing doing right now, so you can give the board a rest for the first couple of days. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus for your early morning paddle.
Friday, the 4th of July, finally brings a glimmer. It’s small, but Saturday morning is the one to wake up for. We’ve got a 2ft south swell with glassy conditions before the wind swings around. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but for a beginner-friendly river mouth, that’s a clean little window. The combined swell energy is weak (78), so don’t expect much power, but the tide and wind will line up.
The real standout – and I mean the standout of the whole outlook – is Sunday morning, the 5th of July. The swell jumps to 8ft from the south with an 11-second period, pushing moderate energy (1863). That’s a proper groundswell, and with a clean cross-off breeze from the SSW, the Rivermouth will be turning on. It’s a bit punchy for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, this is as good as it gets in the near term. Crowds are possible here, and on a Sunday with that much swell, you can bet the locals will be out.
The week from Monday the 6th to Thursday the 9th holds consistent 5ft to 6ft south-east swell with clean morning conditions, especially Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The period ticks up to 11 seconds on the 9th, which will give the waves some extra push and shape. It’s not huge, but it’s reliable and clean for a river mouth setup.
Now, a heads-up for the second week. Tuesday the 14th of July sees a spike of 7ft south swell, but it’s shorter period (8 seconds) and won’t be as clean. Still, the afternoon should be surfable with an offshore breeze.
The big news is Wednesday the 15th of July. A massive 16ft southerly groundswell (13-second period) is forecast, with combined wave energy screaming up to 12,367. That is huge. But at the Rivermouth, that’s way too big. It’s for experts only, and honestly, the setup will be dangerous and unruly. The wind is favorable (glassy in the morning), but the swell is over 8ft, so unless you’re a total gun, stay well clear. This is more of a spectacle than a session.
The end of the second week (16th to 18th July) is messy. We’ve got solid 10ft-plus swell, but it’s accompanied by onshore winds and rain, making conditions pretty poor. The Saturday the 18th tries to clean up with a cross-off breeze, but 12ft of south swell is still too much for this break. Honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing wind farm than a paddle-friendly line-up.
So, to wrap it up: your best bets are Sunday the 5th for a solid, clean south swell, and the Tuesday to Thursday mornings in the first week for smaller but clean waves. The big stuff on the 15th is for the brave and the foolish in equal measure.
Rusty.
