The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Moruya Rivermouth (Australia) are a mixed bag with a few bright spots, but nothing that’s gonna have you phoning in sick for work. The best of the window sits right at the end of the first week and into the start of September, with a couple of cleaner windows.
Right now, we’re in a patch of nothing special. The swell is tiny and the wind is messy. Monday the 24th starts with a tiny 2ft S swell at 9 seconds and a cross-shore wind – don’t bother. The afternoon picks up a bit to 4ft from the NE, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s weak and won’t hold shape. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
The whole of Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th morning are a write-off – poor conditions with that same NE wind messing things up. But then Wednesday afternoon the 26th shows a little promise: the wind drops to glassy, and we get a 5ft SSE swell, period 7 seconds, with moderate wave energy (350). It’s clean, but the swell is still a bit short-period and on the smaller side – okay for a beginner but not a standout.
Thursday morning the 27th is glassy again but the swell drops to 2ft – weak. Thursday afternoon goes onshore. Friday the 28th morning is the real pick of the early run: dead calm, glassy, 4ft SSE swell at 10 seconds, with moderate energy (387). That’s a clean, fun-sized wave with some push. The morning is the time to be there. The afternoon goes onshore and loses quality.
Saturday the 29th morning is glassy again with 3ft SSE swell at 10 seconds and moderate energy (213) – another clean session but smaller. The rest of the weekend and into the start of the week is small and messy. There’s a noticeable gap from Sunday the 30th afternoon right through to Thursday the 3rd of September – nothing worth paddling out for.
Then we get another little window. Friday the 4th of September morning: offshore WNW wind at 9 mph, 3ft SSE swell at 10 seconds, moderate energy (262). Clean, offshore, but small. Not a standout, but a solid surfable session.
The real standout of the whole 16-day period is Saturday the 5th of September morning. Glassy conditions, 3ft SE swell with a very long period of 15 seconds, and strong wave energy (411). That long period groundswell will wrap in nicely around the rivermouth, offering clean, lined-up waves with good shape. The sets will be a bit spaced out, but the paddle out is easy. The crowd profile says “sometimes” – so expect a few locals out, but it won’t be a circus. If you can wait, this is the morning to aim for.
After that, it drops back to small and messy through to Tuesday the 8th of September, which finishes with a 5ft NE swell and clean cross-off wind – but it’s short period and the energy is moderate (341). Worth a look if you’re desperate.
But honestly, Saturday the 5th of September morning is the one. Glassy, clean, long period groundswell, and the rivermouth will handle it beautifully. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too ordinary.
Rusty.
