The Lowdown

Right off the bat, it’s looking pretty flat and messy for the next week or so. Moruya Rivermouth is the only spot on the cards, and honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for until we get to Tuesday the 25th. There’s a long stretch of poor surf and tiny waves before we see any life in the water.

The first sign of something decent shows up on Tuesday the 25th with a 4.9ft ENE swell, but it’s pretty weak, only 7 seconds and the combined energy sits at 208. The morning looks clean with a light offshore, but it’s still pretty average. Wednesday the 26th gets blown out with a strong SSE wind pushing through at 22 mph.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is on Sunday the 30th. Overnight, a proper south swell builds in, and we see 7.9ft of S swell at 9 seconds, with readings ramping right up. The energy jumps to 970, which is a solid surge of power, but it’s a cross-onshore and it's going to be a bit lumpy.

But that's not the big story. By Monday the 31st, the ocean goes nuts. A massive 16.4ft S swell at 13 seconds shows up with the combined swell energy jumping to a huge 13334. That's some serious, powerful groundswell energy, but the swell is way too big for the Rivermouth. That’s a day for the experts only, and even then, it’s pushing it at this break. The wind is a cross-onshore NE at 12 mph, so it will be messy.

That big, powerful swell hangs around into the start of September, with 9.8ft+ south swells continuing through the 1st and 2nd. It’s still just too big and a bit too cross-onshore to be any good here.

The water temp is currently a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at 63.5°F, which is nice.

As for the spot itself, Moruya Rivermouth (a river mouth) is fairly consistent, but it's not going to handle this big, powerful swell well. So between the small, weak days and the oversized, blown-out days, there really is no magic window in the next 16 days. Maybe the 3rd of September, when the swell drops back to 5.9ft at 10 seconds, but the wind is cross and it's still a bit average. That’s the best chance, but it’s not great.

Keep an eye on it, because big southern groundswells like that often stir things up and shift the sand. But for now, I’d be finding something else to do.
