The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, choppy, and mostly messy conditions. Nothing’s jumping out as a stand-out, but let’s walk through it.
We’re starting off on Thursday, July 16th, and the water is sitting at 64°F – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, a real anomaly of 4°F. The only spot on the radar is Milook, a reef break that’s exposed to the swell. It’s normally inconsistent anyway, so this isn’t a huge surprise. The swell is tiny, only 1ft from the W with a weak period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 25. The wind is a cross-on from the NNW at 9 mph, so it’s already choppy. This is a no-go.
The next couple of weeks don’t get any better. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th have swell barely up to 3ft from the NNW, but the wind is a cross-on mess, staying in the 9-16 mph range. The wave energy is weak, sitting between 13 and 30. Sunday the 19th morning offers a brief clean-up with an ENE cross-off breeze at 12 mph, but the swell is still only 2ft. It’s a tease.
The pattern continues right through to the first week of August. We see a bit of a bump on the 25th of July, with the swell hitting 4ft from the NW, but the wind is a cross-on 16 mph, so it’s just more choppy junk. The energy stays under 100 all that week.
Now, there’s a little flicker of hope towards the end. On Wednesday, July 29th, the swell picks up to 5ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 146 – that’s moderate, finally. The wind is onshore from the WNW at 16 mph, though, so it’s going to be lumpy and closed out. The 30th of July has similar energy (111 to 177) with a 4ft W swell, but again, fresh cross-onshore winds at 19 mph with rain showers. This is more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing.
Honestly, there’s not a single day in this 16-day window that I’d call good. The surf is poor every single day. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this kind of blank run isn’t totally abnormal, but it’s still a bummer to look at. Hang tight, look further down the line, and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
