The Lowdown
Right, pull up a rock and listen close. Rusty here, and I've got the goods on Milook for the next couple of weeks. Let's be straight with each other: this is a proper drought we're in for the next week or so. The sea's basically asleep, and the bits of energy that are showing up are doing so with a side of messy wind. We're looking at a long, flat spell before anything remotely interesting turns up.
First up, we have to talk about the water temp. It's sitting right about where you'd expect for late August, so no surprises there. You won't need a 5/4 for this.
Right, so starting now and through to the 30th of August, it's grim. Tiny scraps of swell – we're talking 0.7 ft to 2 ft at best, mostly from the west. The wind's all over the shop, sometimes offshore but with such minimal energy the combined wave energy is barely a whisper, sitting between 12 and 53. There's nothing here to get excited about. Save your wax.
Moving into the final day of August and the first few days of September, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The 31st of August morning shows a tiny 3 ft W’ly swell, and for the first time in ages, the conditions are described as "surfable but very ordinary". The wind is light and offshore-ish, which is a plus, but the energy is still weak at 86. It's a tease, really. After that, we're back to poor surf until the 3rd of September.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. On the 3rd of September, things start to change. The swell lifts to 5 ft from the west, with the combined energy jumping to a moderate 224. The wind is light and cross-shore. It's still only "marginal", but you can feel the pulse starting.
Then, Friday the 4th of September is the day. The morning is your standout window. We've got a clean 5 ft swell from the west, with a gentle, cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a solid 324, which means there's some proper power in the water. This is the pick of the entire forecast. Milook is an inconsistent, exposed reef, so it needs a good push to work, and this looks like it. The wind will keep it glassy and clean. It's an intermediate spot, so 5 ft is a solid size.
The afternoon of the 4th holds a similar 5 ft swell, but the rain and a moderate breeze might mess with the surface a touch. Still worth a paddle.
After that, the window slams shut again. The 5th and 6th of September see the wind howling onshore and messy, with rain showers. The swell gets bigger – up to 7 ft on the Sunday – but with strong cross-onshore winds, it'll be a washing machine. For a beach break, I'd be looking at a kite instead of a paddleboard, but Milook is a reef, so that's not really on the cards. It'll just be ugly. The 7th of September is more of the same: messy and blown out.
So, to sum it up: don't bother until the 4th of September. That Friday morning is your one shot at some clean, punchy waves at Milook. Mark it in your calendar, but don't hold your breath for anything before that.
Rusty.
