The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Right, so this Milook forecast ain’t lookin’ pretty. We’ve got a 16-day window and most of it is small, messy, and just not worth gettin’ wet for. There’s a stretch from now through to the 5th of September where you’ll be starin’ at flat or junk more often than not.
Today and tomorrow, the swell is tiny – 3ft down to 1ft – and the wind is cross-onshore or cross-shore, makin’ it choppy. The water temp is 66°F, which is 4°F above normal – that’s much warmer than usual.
The only time we see a pulse is around the 27th of August, with a 3ft west-southwest swell and 5ft in the afternoon, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-onshore, wreckin’ it. The wave energy hits 270 (moderate), but it’s short-period at 8 seconds so it’s weak and bumpy.
Honestly, the best chance is Sunday the 30th of August. The morning brings a 5ft west swell (8 seconds, 253 energy – moderate), with a gentle breeze from the south-southeast makin’ it cross-off and clean. It’s a marginal call – tide dependant – but that’s the only clean window in sight. That afternoon turns cross-onshore again.
Then Monday the 31st morning has a 6ft west swell at 8 seconds, with 481 energy (strong), but the wind is from the south-southwest at 9 mph, blowin’ cross-shore with a little chop. Still only marginal. Milook is a reef break that’s inconsistent, and it needs a west-southwest swell for best shape – that’s what’s comin’, but the short period means it’ll be fat and lumpy.
After that, we’re back to small stuff. Thursday the 3rd of September mornin’ is glassy with 1ft from the west – pretty but flat. That afternoon, a 7ft north-west swell shows up with 417 energy (strong), but the wind is cross-onshore at 9 mph and the period is only 7 seconds, so it’ll be a choppy mess.
If you’re desperate, Sunday the 30th morning is the pick – clean, small, but you might get a couple of smooth ones. Otherwise, this is a long, quiet run. Rusty.
