The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Milook. Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough run. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the first decent surfable moment doesn’t show up until Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. Before that, we’ve got a few days of nothing but onshore junk and slop, so don’t bother rushing down.
That Saturday morning is the best we’ll see for a while. It’s small, with a swell of just 2ft from the west, but the wind is light and easterly, coming cross-offshore. That’ll make the surface glassy and clean. The combined energy is weak, only 69, so it’s really a longboard-only kind of day. The reef is inconsistent, and it does get crowded often, so you’ll want to be early if you’re after a wave.
From there, it’s a long dry spell. Sunday the 23rd is tiny, with 1.0ft, and then we’re into a whole week of nothing but tiny, messy, or blown-out conditions. The wind goes mostly offshore from the 24th to the 26th, but with swell dropping to 0.7ft, it’s just not worth the paddle. The water temp is sitting at 66°F on that first morning, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a bit of a treat in itself.
We get a pulse of bigger swell kicking in around Friday the 28th of August, with 5ft, but it’s coming with a fresh onshore breeze, making it choppy and poor. The energy picks up to 205, but the quality is just not there. Then over the weekend of the 29th and 30th, it gets proper chunky – 10ft on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday morning. That’s expert territory, especially as it’s a west swell hitting an exposed reef. The combined energy jumps into the thousands (1522 and 1416), so there’s plenty of power, but the wind is cross-onshore and lumpy, so it’s not going to be a pretty picture. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The rest of the run into early September keeps seeing pulses of 7ft to 7ft swell, but every single one is accompanied by poor wind conditions – onshore or cross-onshore, often fresh. There’s a brief moment on Friday the 4th of September where the wind turns north-northeasterly, creating a cross-shore, and the swell hangs around 7ft with a 9-second period. The energy is strong, at 660, and it’s rated as marginal. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but honestly, it’s still a gamble.
So, the standout? Despite the size, it’s got to be that Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. It’s the only window where the conditions are clean, even if the swell is tiny. For the big stuff later, you’d need a lot of luck with the wind to make it work. That’s all she wrote for this stretch.
Rusty.
