The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next two weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. I’ve had a look at the numbers, and the honest truth is there’s nothing on the cards that I’d call a good session. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality waves, so don’t be holding your breath.
The first real chance of anything comes on the 24th of July, but even that’s a struggle. The swell is tiny at 2 ft from the west, and while the wind goes offshore and clean, it’s blowing a strong 25 mph. That’s a real battle to get out and stay in position. The combined energy is weak at 53, so you’re not getting pushed around, just frustrated. The 25th of July morning offers a moment of calm with glassy conditions and a 2 ft west swell, but the period is short at 7 seconds, meaning weak, crumbly waves. The energy is still low at 62. It’s about as close to a surfable moment as we get, but it’s not a standout by any stretch.
Later in the window, around the 27th of July, we see a bump in size. The swell climbs to 6 ft from the west, with moderate energy levels (398-550). The wind is cross-offshore and clean, which would normally be a winner. But the problem is the break itself – Milook is a reef that’s inconsistent and exposed. For a spot that rarely breaks well, this is still a gamble. The period is a middling 8-9 seconds, so it’s not a proper groundswell that really lines up on a reef. Honestly, for a setup like this with those cross-offshore winds and that much swell, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle guys.
The water is a real talking point, though. At Milook, it’s currently 66°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be in a shorty or even boardies if you’re brave.
To sum it up: there’s no green light in this forecast. The blank run stretches from now all the way through to the end of the month. It’s a proper dry spell, so don’t waste your time. Keep the boards in the van and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
