The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough watch for the next week or so. We're looking at a proper run of flat, messy conditions that'll test your patience. The first recommendation doesn't pop up until Tuesday the 25th of August, so that's a solid week of nothing worth paddling out for. The pattern is pretty grim; onshore winds are the norm, and the swell is small and weak. The water's a bit of a shocker too – a whopping 4°F warmer than usual, sitting at 66°F when we finally get a reading on the 18th. That's a big anomaly for this time of year.
The only spot that's holding any kind of promise is Milook. This is a reef break that's exposed to the swell, but it's inconsistent and can get crowded. Don't expect a party wave here.
The first real flicker of life comes on Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning sees a bump in the swell, with a 6ft wave from the WSW, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore. The combined energy is moderate at 537. It's still a bit of a gamble, the guidance says "marginal," but that's the best we've seen in days. The period is a short 9 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and won't have that groundswell punch.
After that, it's back to the doldrums. The 27th of August Thursday morning offers a tiny, glassy 3ft wave from the west with a combined energy of 148. It's surfable, but "very ordinary" is the word. The ESE wind is glassy, so it'll look pretty, but there's no power in it.
Then on the 28th of August, Friday morning, we get a similar story: a 3ft swell from the west with a clean ENE cross-offshore wind. Again, the energy is low at 99. It's a knee-high dribbler at best.
Honestly, there's no true standout here. If you're absolutely desperate for a paddle, the best bet is the morning of the 25th of August. That 6ft swell with clean wind is the only window where you might get a couple of fun ones. But even then, it's a long way from firing. Don't get your hopes up.
