The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the outlook for this stretch of coast is a rough one. We’re looking at a long, long dry spell with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until the very end of the month, so we’ve got a solid gap of about two weeks with nothing but small, weak, and messy surf.
The first session that even hints at life is on the morning of the 29th of July. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – you’ll feel that difference, it’s a proper warm blanket compared to the norm.
Milook (Milook) is the only spot on the cards, and it’s a reef break that’s notoriously inconsistent. For the first two weeks, it’s a write-off. Tiny 0.7ft to 2ft slop, mostly from the NNW, with weak energy readings (most days under 50). The winds are a mess of cross-shore and cross-onshore, and the periods are short, under 8 seconds. It’s just not doing anything.
Then, around the 28th of July, things start to twitch. The afternoon of the 28th shows a jump to 5ft from the west, with a moderate energy reading of 226. Still, the wind is onshore and the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess – more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
The standout window, and the only time I’d really consider it, is the morning of the 29th of July. We get a 6ft west swell, with a moderate energy of 487. The period stretches to 9 seconds, which gives it some push. The best part? Light cross-offshore winds from the NNW. That’s the cleanest we’ll see it. Swell size is over 5ft, so it’s not for beginners, but for an intermediate, that’s a proper session. Just be aware that Milook is inconsistent, so don’t bank on it being perfect. The crowd factor is “often”, so you’ll likely have company.
The 30th of July still shows some life, with a 4ft west swell and 225 energy, but the winds turn cross-onshore again, knocking the quality down.
So, to sum it up: you’re waiting until the 29th of July. That morning is your best shot. The rest of the 16 days? It’s a flat, frustrating wait. Stay optimistic though – when it does come, the water is warm and the swell has some weight.
