Alright, grab a coffee. Let's have a proper look at what's coming our way.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We've got a long stretch of small, weak, and often messy conditions. The first real glimmer of anything rideable doesn't show up until Wednesday the 8th of July, and even then it's nothing to write home about. There's a big gap of nothing, then a few days with just a hint of surfable waves, but nothing that gets the heart racing.
Let's break it down.
We start off this Saturday the 4th and Sunday with some knee-high swell, around 2 ft from the west, but it's all onshore wind. The water's sitting at a warm 63°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, so that's a weird one. The energy is weak, with readings in the 70s and 90s on Saturday and Sunday. Monday the 6th is more of the same – small, cross-onshore junk. It’s not worth getting wet for.
The first day that even sniffs at being okay is Wednesday morning, July 8th. It's small, only 2 ft from the west with a 9-second period, but we get a window of glassy conditions with light easterly winds. The combined energy is still weak (61), but at least it'll be clean. It won't be good, but you could get a few little ones if you're desperate.
Thursday the 9th morning is actually the pick of the bunch for the whole first week. We have 2 ft west swell (9-second period) but with a moderate offshore wind from the east at 12 mph. That will clean things right up. It's small, sure, but a clean 2 ft is way better than a choppy 3 ft. The energy is weak at 63, but the wind is solid. The afternoon gets a bit too fresh with 18 mph offshore winds, so the morning is the window.
Friday the 10th also offers a clean window in the afternoon with 2 ft from the west and a cross-offshore breeze. It's still very ordinary, but it's another session for the log or a funboard.
After that, from Saturday the 11th through to the end of the period on Sunday the 19th, it's a write-off. The swell drops to 1 ft to 2 ft, the periods are short, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the west and northwest. The wave energy drops into the teens and twenties. This reef is exposed to the west-southwest, but there's just no power behind it. It's paddleboard or kite-surfing territory for a couple of weeks.
In short: If you absolutely need to get wet, aim for Thursday morning, July 9th at Milook. The offshore wind will make even the small, weak swell look better than anything else on offer. It's an inconsistent reef and the crowds can be an issue when it's the only game in town, so you might have it to yourself. It's not a standout, but it's all we've got.
