Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Rusty here, checkin’ in from the Milook area. Gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a real flat spell. There’s simply no good surf on offer anywhere in this region. The whole forecast window from Tuesday July 7 right through to Wednesday July 22 is filled with poor conditions and tiny waves. The swell just isn’t showing up, and when it does it’s weak and messy.
Milook is a reef break that’s exposed to the west-southwest, and it’s usually inconsistent – it rarely breaks properly. When it does, it can get crowded often. But right now there’s nothing to ride. The water temperature is sitting at 63°F – a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 3°F above the long-term average, so that’s a little unusual. But with no swell, it’s just a warm bath.
The combined energy values are all under 100, mostly in the teens and forties, peaking at 104 on Friday July 10 morning – still weak. Even the best-looking morning on Friday July 10 has a tiny 3 ft west swell at 9 seconds, but the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” and the score is a 1. That’s as good as it gets. Other mornings like Wednesday July 8 and Monday July 20 also have small, marginal waves, but the wind is glassy or light, so the setup is clean – just nothing to surf.
The rest of the period is all poor surf: strong offshore winds, cross-offshore breezes, or onshore winds, with wave heights never exceeding 3 ft. The swell comes mostly from the west or northwest, not the optimum WSW direction, and periods are short – under 10 seconds usually. Nothing to get excited about.
Bottom line: this is a long, dry run. Milook is a classic spot when it works, but it just ain’t working right now. Don’t bother paddling out – the only thing that might be worth a look is if you’re into kite surfing, but even then, the wind is mostly light or offshore. Better to wait for a proper groundswell from the right direction. Keep an eye on the charts – forecasts can change, and this break can fire when it gets a solid WSW swell with a long period.
Rusty.
