Right then, let’s have a look at what Milook is offering over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you, it’s not going to be a classic run. The forecast is pretty bleak for the most part, with hardly any proper waves to get excited about. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf ahead, and it’s not until late in the month that we see any real size, but even then, conditions look messy.

Milook is a reef break, exposed to the west-southwest, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times, so a run of flat days isn’t that unusual. The water temp is sitting at 64°F which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – a solid 4°F above average. That’s a nice bonus, but it’s about the only highlight for a while.

Starting off on Saturday the 11th of July, we’ve got a tiny 2ft west swell with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 54, and it’s just poor surf conditions. The wind is a cross-off from the ENE, which keeps the surface clean, but there isn’t enough swell to bother paddling out. This pattern of small, weak swells continues right through the following week. Sunday the 12th through to Tuesday the 21st of July is just a string of days with waves between 0.3ft and 2ft and combined energy often dipping below 50. There’s no punch in any of it, and it’s a total write-off for surfing. The winds are a mixed bag – some clean offshore periods, but the swell is just too weak to do anything with. We’re looking at a solid 10-day gap with no real surf on offer.

Now, things do change around Tuesday the 21st of July. We start to see a pulse of energy, with the swell building to 4ft to 5ft from the west-northwest, and the combined energy jumps to between 152 and 209. That’s moderate energy, but the problem is the wind. It’s a fresh cross-onshore from the SW and WSW, which will make it lumpy and choppy. It’s not good for surfing, and honestly, with that setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The best, and I mean the only real stand-out in this entire outlook, is on Saturday the 25th of July. We’ve got an 8ft swell from the west-northwest with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy hits a strong 1033, so there’s plenty of power. This is a serious swell, but it’s only for experienced surfers as it’s well over the 8ft mark for experts. The catch is the wind – it’s cross-on from the W and WSW, 16 mph, so it’ll be choppy. It’s far from perfect, but if you’re after some size and you’re an advanced surfer, that’s your window. Sunday the 26th drops right back down to 4ft with fresh cross-on winds, so that big day is a very short-lived spike.

So, to sum it up: a long, flat start, a messy middle with building swell and rubbish wind, and one big, powerful, but choppy day right at the end. It’s not a classic forecast, but forecasts can always change for the better. Keep an eye on it.
