The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: if you’re looking for a classic surf session over the next couple of weeks, this stretch of coast is going to test your patience. The data is telling me we’ve got a long, tough run of poor surf conditions, with only a couple of raw, powerful windows that might be worth a look for the hardcore crew.
The only spot on the radar is Milook (reef). It’s an exposed reef break, but it’s inconsistent and often crowded, so don’t expect to have it to yourself. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a bit of a treat for the skin.
The first week is a write-off. From Sunday, 23 August, right through to Friday, 28 August, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell. Heights are barely scraping 1ft to 2ft, with combined wave energy stuck in the low double digits (27 to 59). The wind is all over the place – cross-off, cross-on, fresh offshore – but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride. It’s frustrating.
Then, on Saturday, 29 August, things get a bit wild. A big pulse of swell hits with an 8ft wave from the WNW. The combined energy jumps to a massive 661 – that’s proper power. However, the wind is howling onshore at 19 mph, and the period is a short, crumbly 8 seconds. This is expert-only territory. The size is intimidating, and the onshore wind will make it a messy, lumpy beast. It’s more of a spectacle than a session.
The following week doesn’t offer much respite. Monday, 31 August, has another solid pulse of 7ft from the NW (energy 385), but again, it’s onshore wind and a short period. By Tuesday, 01 September, it’s dropping back to 4ft and the quality is still poor. The rest of the week into the first week of September is a mix of small, weak swell and strong, messy cross-onshore winds. A few days in early September show some clean conditions from the SSE, but the swell is still small and weak.
If you’re a kite surfer, the setup from the 29th August through the 31st, with big swell and strong wind at an exposed beach-reef, might look interesting. But for a paddle surfer? It’s grim. The best advice is to wait. The forecasts can change, and it rarely stays this poor for long, but right now, the 16-day window is a big, fat zero for quality.
Rusty.
