The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you—this outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We’re looking at Milook, a reef break that’s pretty inconsistent at the best of times, and unfortunately, the stars just aren’t aligning for a proper session. The whole run is basically a write-off, with no decent surf on offer. There’s a gap of poor conditions stretching from now all the way through to the end of the period. It’s a blank run, and for a spot like this, that’s not all that unusual—it tends to be a “wait and see” kind of place.

We kick off with Friday afternoon, July 17th, and it’s just not happening. A tiny 0.7ft swell from the west with a weak period of 8 seconds, and a cross-onshore breeze from the northwest at 12 mph. The combined energy is a measly 12 (weak energy), and the water temp is 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Still, it’s all poor surf conditions.

Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are much the same story. Tiny, weak swells (2ft, 2ft) with short periods (4-6 seconds) and persistent cross-onshore winds. The energy stays low, in the 20-30 range. Even the cleaner moments on Sunday morning with a cross-offshore breeze can’t save it—there’s just no swell to work with.

The whole first week is a grind. Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd—all showing poor surf conditions with heights under 3ft and energy rarely cracking 40. A bit of a bump on Wednesday afternoon with 4ft from the NNW, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy, with only 88 (weak energy). Not worth the paddle out.

Thursday the 23rd through Saturday the 26th is more of the same. Tiny, weak waves, cross-onshore winds, and energy levels that barely register. There’s a slight uptick on Sunday the 26th afternoon with a 5ft swell from the WNW and a period of 6 seconds, pushing energy up to 145 (moderate energy), but the wind is still cross-onshore at 16 mph. It’s messy, and the period is short—won’t be any kind of quality.

Now, Monday the 27th of July brings the biggest swell of the whole run. We’re looking at 6ft from the WNW with a period of 7 seconds, and energy jumping to 352 (moderate energy). That’s a solid head-high wave, but it’s blowing onshore from the northwest at 12 mph and the setup is “unknown” for the wind state. At this size, it’s getting into the intermediate zone, but with onshore wind and a short period, it’s going to be a lumpy, closed-out mess. This is a reef break, so it might handle the size better than a beach, but the wind is just wrong. It’s a pass.

The rest of the run, from Tuesday the 28th through to Saturday the 1st of August, is a slow fade. Swells drop back to 3ft to 4ft, periods stay short (6-8 seconds), and the wind is almost always cross-onshore or fresh and lumpy. Energy levels vary from 39 to 181, but it’s all poor surf conditions. There’s simply nothing to get excited about.

So, the honest truth? There’s no standout. No best day. The biggest swell on the 27th is let down by the wind and short period. The whole 16-day window is a dud for a paddle. If you’re a kite surfer, you might find some fun in the onshore slop, but for a traditional surf, leave the board at home. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a hard pass.

Rusty.
