Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on offer.

To be honest, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a paddle. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak, or messy swell for most of the period. There’s a long gap with almost no surf worth paddling out for, especially from around the 11th of July right through to the 22nd, where the conditions just don’t stack up for a good wave.

The only real glimmer of hope, and I mean the only one, is a brief window around Wednesday the 9th of July into Friday the 11th of July. But even that’s a stretch.

Let’s start with the break that’s our best bet. Milook is a reef break that’s exposed to a WSW swell. Over the whole 16 days, the only time we see any moderate wave energy is on the morning of Friday the 10th of July, with a combined energy of 107 (moderate). The swell is a small 3 ft from the W with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a short-period wind swell, not a groundswell, so it won’t have heaps of punch. But the wind that morning is a light offshore from the E (3 mph), making for clean conditions. That’s your standout. The rest of the window is small, too – 2 ft to 2 ft Wednesday through Thursday, with periods still short (8-10 seconds). The only other clean moment is Thursday afternoon with glassy conditions, but it’s only 2 ft.

So, if you’re desperate for a surf, the morning of Friday the 10th of July at Milook is the only time it all comes together: small but clean, with a light offshore wind. It’s inconsistent here, so don’t expect a wave every minute. Crowds are often at this spot, so you might have company for the few decent sets that roll through.

Water temperature at Milook on the 7th of July was 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

After that Friday morning, the swell drops right off and the wind goes onshore or cross-shore for days. From the 11th of July onward, we’ve got swell heights under 2 ft, often 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft, with poor surf conditions all the way to the 22nd. The energy levels are in the teens or twenties (weak), and the wind is either too strong, onshore, or cross-off with no real swell to ride. There’s one morning on the 15th of July with glassy conditions but only 1.0 ft of swell – you’d need a longboard and a lot of patience.

Honestly, it’s a tough outlook. The forecast can always shift, but for now, keep your expectations low. If it picks up, you’ll hear about it.

Rusty.
