Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead for Milook. This is a reef break that’s inconsistent and has a tricky setup, so when it’s flat or messy, it’s really flat or messy. The good news is that there are a couple of windows late in the period that look like they could serve up something worthwhile, but you’re going to have to be patient.
Right now, we’ve got nothing. No surf worth paddling out for. Friday the 3rd starts with a weak 4ft swell from the west, but that cross-onshore wind is already ruining it. The combined wave energy is only 284 (moderate at best), and it’s described as marginal. That sets the tone for the next week or so. From Saturday the 4th right through to Thursday the 10th, we’re looking at mostly tiny, weak waves – around 2ft to 3ft – with poor conditions. Offshore winds appear on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th morning, cleaning things up, but with combined energy dropping to just 42 (weak) on the 9th morning and 80 (weak) on the 10th morning, there’s just no power. You’d be fighting for ankle-biters.
Then we hit a big, dry gap. From Saturday the 11th right through to Sunday the 12th, it’s basically flat and blown out. The combined energy sinks to 30 (very weak) on the 12th morning.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. On Monday the 13th, we finally see a spike. A new long-period groundswell from the west-northwest arrives, pushing 5ft in the morning with a period of 12 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 605 (strong). However, the wind is a gentle cross-onshore in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s onshore and the swell has built to 6ft – that’s too big for beginners, and with onshore wind and a period over 11 seconds, those sets could be fat and close out on a reef. The afternoon score is zero. The morning of the 13th gets a marginal rating. This isn’t a true standout, but it’s the first pulse of real energy.
After that, it drops back into the doldrums. The 14th through the 17th sees fluctuating but mostly poor conditions, with the best being a clean 4ft swell from the west on the 16th morning (combined energy 246 – moderate), but with a moderate breeze and a 9-second period, it’s just ordinary. On Friday the 17th, a short-period wind swell from the north-northwest appears at 5ft (combined energy 310 – strong), but with a period of just 6 seconds and cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be a messy, choppy wall. Not for paddling – that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The standout window is actually the long-range call. Look at Monday the 13th morning. That 5ft west-northwest groundswell with a 12-second period, despite the cross-onshore tickle, has the strongest energy of the entire 16-day run (605). It’s a reef break, and that long-period swell could produce some clean, lined-up waves if the wind had co-operated. As it stands, it’s the best on offer, but it’s a “promising but less certain” proposition this far out. If the wind shifts just a few degrees offshore, that morning could be magic. But right now, we just don’t have any true standouts.
So, to summarise: a lot of flat, poor, and messy days. The 13th of July is the only day with real size and power, but the wind is letting it down. Keep an eye on that forecast – these things can change.
Rusty.
